Notice: This is a Q&D report. If you want expanded views/comments on anything, lemme know

Pre tourney banter etc etc etc

Dunno what to say here. Had a very busy few weeks up to the tourney, and our playgroup hasn't exactly been active the last few weeks(or months) so I figured I'd just give Ravagers a spin again. I mean, I already won a Twister with the deck, so it can't be all bad.

Fast forward to last week. After posting an updated list on our teamboards I told Diceman about the deck and he agreed that it was pretty cool, but I figured I was still struggling with a few matchups, being Combo and Oath.

Ray of Revelation is such a nice card, seeing it pretty much solves the Oath match on it's own. Ok, how do I beat combo then? 3sphere is a given, but the last time I played the deck, I tried Chalice which were, well..less then stellar. Ideally you'd like to play them at 1, which is impossible with the deck. In the Eye of Chaos is also pretty sweet, but it costs 3 off-shop mana, which makes it suck pretty bad. It's still good vs Gifts, but it just plain sucks vs combo decks, imho.

Oh well, I just figured I'd put a couple of Resistors in the board and see where we got from there. I didn't test the deck in it's present setup a whole lot, but it seems to be doing the job.

Ravagers, may 2006 (Or, AbuseClamp&Plating2TheMax)

4 Arcbound Ravager
4 Arcbound Worker
4 Myr Servitor
2 Myr Retriever
4 Metalworker
2 Triskelion
         20
4 Skullclamp
3 Cranial Plating
4 Tangle Wire
         11
1 Tinker
1 Crop Rotation
1 Memory Jar
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Time Walk
         5
1 Black Lotus
1 Sol Ring
1 Mana Vault
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mana Crypt
         9
1 Tolarian Academy
1 Gaea's Cradle
1 Ancient Tomb
1 City of Traitors
4 Mishra's Workshop
4 City of Brass
3 Glimmervoid
         15

Sideboard:
3 Pithing Needle
3 Viashino Heretic
3 Ray of Revelation
3 Choke
1 Trinisphere
2 Sphere of Resistance
         15

Some notes on the deck: you might notice that I'm not playing wastes/strip. I didn't like them from the beginning and the more I play this deck, the more I'm convinced that they don't really belong here. Everyone plays a million basics, which makes Wasteland well..suck. Also, you want as much mana as possible each turn, since you're aiming for turn 3-4 kill. A case can be made for Strip Mine over City of Traitors though, since that at least attacks basic lands.

On with the report

After chatting a bit with friends, writing a decklist etc, pairings for round 1 go up. Lo and behold: I'm on them.

Round 1: Simon with Control Slaver

Neither of us mulligan'ed. I don't know a whole lot about either of these games, but it seems we both drew less than stellar, as I see his life total decrease in 2's and 3's, while I go to 18 from a City in game 1. Game 2 sees more of the same. Man, I should write down what I boarded next time...

2-0, 1-0

Round 2: Dennis with R/w Goblins

No mulligans again. All I know is that he's playing some mountains and when he opens with a Plateau, I figure I'm up against TMWA. Wrong, savagely wrong. He starts playing some goblins, but a timely Tinker for Trike with a Ravager to feed it keeps his goblins at bay. Game 2 see game 1.

2-0, 2-0

Jan de Vrij with MUD

Meh, what a let down. He started with Strip Mine, lotus, mox, Crucible, Chalice on 0 AND Resistor. I quickly decide to scoop, since my only out at this moment was Shop, Vault, Metalworker. Game 2 sees me overpower him as he has a rather slow hand while I draw savage cards with Clamp, Trike his Karn and drop Plating for the win. Game 3 is another letdown. I keep a non-shop hand, he goes Strip, 2 moxes, 3Sphere. Then he casts Wasteland, Smokestack. And another...and another. CHEATS!!

1-2, 2-1

Jasper with Oath

It seems Tangle Wire won game 1, as he never got to 2 mana to cast an Oath. Game 2 sees me Ray his Oath and that's all she wrote.

2-0, 3-1

Sjoerd with mono-black discard, Megrim something..

ID for top 8

3-1-1

Top 8: Jan with MUD

Luck is all on my side now. Game 1 is over pretty fast, as is game 2.

Top 4: Peter with mono-U Mask

Erhm..I drop a critter turn 1, 2 Platings turn 2 and attack for 11. He doesn't find an answer.. Game 2: We trade solutions for a bit, but I never get anything concrete going. However, neither does he. I slowly wittle him down with a couple of Servitors while a Heretic keeps a watch for pesky 12/12 beaters. He has one morphed from a Mask, but he can't attack with it, since it'd die then.

Tom v/d Logt with Confidant TPS

I slowly wittle him down to 1, then he plays some Tendrils spell for the win, with some help from Rituals and a Will. Game 2 sees me shoot him with a Trike from 14 life, while he'd just tutor'ed for a bounce spell so his Colossus would get a free reign of the battlefield. Game 3 sees us both get so-so hands, I have a Resistor and nothing else, but rip a CLamp and start drawing a few cards. He can't find any lands and is stuck with 3 moxen and a Ring. I wittle him down to 6, drop a Plating and he can't find an answer to the Resistor or Plating.

So I win a Library. Not bad, not bad, the deck just keeps performing solidly. I really like the deck the way it's built now and will likely change 1-2 cards at most. I dislike the Heretics in the board though, I think I'd rather have Sprees, they don't have summoning sickness, which is pretty important versus quite a few decks.

It's hard to be religious, when certain people don`t get incinerated by lightning...

On another note, while Ancestral is clearly very very good, having it in your opening is hand is not. - AmbivalentDuck

Congratz on your win, I didn't even know that there was an eindhoven tournament...  Sad but I hadn't got time today so it doesn't matter much.

Nice to see Tom play vintage once again, which version of drain TPS did he play?

Hey, congrats on the win! So no split after all, huh?

Yeah, mulliganing to 5 in game one didn't help and I knew it would get harder after sideboarding. I kept a shaky hand in game two that would require some draws... I got every one of them a turn too late. Even one turn before you killed me I had about 6 or 7 outs that I could see but my Sensei Top was showing me even more Dreadnaughts... *sigh*. Anyway, I'll write up a report tomorrow where I'll get into it a little more.

Seeing as how you're already Mono Brown, Mana Maze seems like a decent card.

Congratulations on your finish. It is good to see that eindhoven is atracting enough people to support such prizes again.

Nice to see you guys play vintage with my deck Smile

It really rocks SmileSmileSmile of the 4 tournaments I brought the deck to, I won/split in finals like three. It's really rewarding if you play it well, that's what I like most of it. Maybe I should write a article about it, drain combo has risen in holland, everybody is playing it and doing well with it. To bad I have no time to develop more vintage decks due school and playing other big tournaments Wink
