So I felt like visiting WotC's MTG site and I came accross this beauty in a Coldsnap article.

Dark Depths

Legedary Snow Land

Comes into play tapped.
Comes into play with 10 ice counters on it.
3: remove a counter from Dark Depths.
When Dark Depths has no counters, sacrifice it and put a black 20/20 legendary indestructable creature with flying into play.

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=mtgcom/feature/343

This is completely Nuts!

Here's how I think this could be viable.

If you use this card with Aether Snap, you can make a 20/20 with only 3BB! And Aether Snap is a sorcery which means it could be used with recoup in Gifts!

What do you guys think?

Remove all counters from all permanents and remove all tokens from the game.

Would this even work?

Even if it does, you would have to play another 2 shitty cards that do nothing useful on their own in Gifts.

Wouldn't the fact that the counters were removed mean that the spell's effect has already resolved?

You do realize that your opponent is going to give you an odd look, say ok, and cast Chain of Vapor or Echoing Truth, right?

It has the same weakness as colossus, but can win games 1 turn faster.

But you can't randomly Tinker it into play either.  It also costs a boatload more mana, inconvenient mana at that, to Gifts FTW.  It would also either force you to play with 2 more crappy cards, or cut 1 crappy card (DSC) and 1 amazing card (Tinker).

It probably doesn't belong in Gifts, but perhaps it could be used in a new deck.

I have to repeat that this isn't sufficient to replace Tinker or Colossus, but on a constructive note it could be awesome in another format such as Legacy.

also theres this thing called wasteland that can respond to the aether snap and cost you a turn.  The land is definitly a cool idea, but I don't think its right for type 1. In extended or legacy I think it would have better potential.

I don't think this card has any potential besides T4 because making this card work requires you to run bad cards.

Is the card good?  No, I don't think so.

Would this be a great card for casual, which is my 2nd favorite format?

Hell yes baby!  Looking for 4 foils when they come out!

Couldn't you just stifle the comes into play with 10 ice counters, sacrifice it right afterwards and get the 20/20? That seems much easier to do than Aether Snap, and Stifle is somewhat usefull outside of the combo.

I guess we have another never going to happen turn one kill:
Crack Lotus for UUU
Play crazy land
Stifle comes into play trigger
sac crazy land
Put 20/20 token into play
Play Time Walk
GG

Of course this land might actually be worth running as a one of in a fish deck. Now even Fish decks can kill on turn one!  Cool

I think you need to learn about Activated and Triggered abilites.  This card's CIP ability is neither.  Its like "Comes Into Play Tapped", you can't stifle that either.

This card seems hilarious, but likely unplayable.

Have you seen the picture on it though? It's one of the coolest looking magic cards ever.

Edit: I will play this in tournament just because it looks so cool.

The only place I thikn this wil actually see competetive play is extended and Type 2 (Wasteland exists in Legacy too).

I actually had to explain to someone why Mana Drain was better than Counterspell. That was depressing...

Then they asked why Black Lotus was better than Gilded Lotus. I walked away.

Yeah, its a static ability. I was thinking it read Whenever ~this~ comes into play... To bad it would have been pretty cool if it was a triggered ability. I suppose you could say it was a whenever away from being playable Smile

I was at a Type 2 tourney a while ago, just to trade and chat a bit....and it seemed like games where regularly going to 10-18 turns...which means that they could actually pay 30 mana to get the critter...! Heh

But as for Type 1...unless someone finds a FlameVault'ish way of using the card, i dont think it will ever get played.

This actually would have been pretty good a few years ago.  Had this actually been in Homelands *shudder* it would have seen tourney level play.

I mean, if you think that Millstone is a good kill card, this is far better.

Unfortunately, (or maybe fortunately) Ivory Tower was the nut high back then, too.  He'd have to swing like 3 times to win the game.

What about a deck with Mana Drains, Drain Power, mana accelerators, Channel, etc.  One big turn, Drain what you can through Mana Drain and Drain Power, make sure they can't counter stuff, get 32 mana, drop this plus Greaves, activate this, equip, and swing!

In type 1 I think its too slow to actually do anything.

at least in the time vault combo when you resolved flame you won right then and there. unless you have time walk and a bunch of counters to protect it and they don't have anything flying that can just chump it it might take you another couple turns or so to win. its also not always easy to come up with BB3, R3 is a lot easier to get. I mean it's possible, and hey maybe I'll try it since it wont be too hard to get an Aether Snap and one of these lands. maybe it will work, just doesn't sound like it.

and even in type 2 I think its pretty bad. its a land drop, that does absolutely nothing until you dump 30 mana into it. maybe if it also tapped for colourless mana, or they are also coming out with some card in coldsnap that can deal with counters, it just seems way to slow, and doesn't do anything. really in the first couple turns would you want to drop this instead of a land that actually taps for mana that you can use? or drop this then spend the next 10 or so turns taking off counters and not doing anything else.

but maybe I just suck at magic.
