Attention all TMD'ers across the pond!

My younger brother and I are going to be traveling in the greater-Germany region this summer (mid June to early July) in order to experience the World Cup how it should be - first hand in Europe.  While he's been over to Germany twice before, this will be my first time outside of North America.  Obviously, I'm completely juiced.

Our rough plan is to find a cheap plane ticket over, and then drive the logistics somewhat around where we touch down and where we have to fly back from.  As he's a poor college student, and I'm a poor State employee, we're planning on taking the train a lot, watching the games in the bars, and spending more time visiting people we know and getting to know the area than hitting cheesey travel destinations and such.  Some recommendations so far have been to see Vienna, Prague and Paris while as well as some of the host cities in Germany.  From what I understand, we'll both be able to get discounts on the train (he's 20 and I'm 25), but that they have options for Germany only, or other passes.  We still have to contact extended family we have in Germany, but we have no set plans for sleeping arrangements yet.  I've heard camping is popular this time of year, but I expect many of the grounds to be crowded due to the Cup.

So, now that you guys have a rough idea what we're looking for, what do you guys recommend?

Where should we go?
How should we travel?
Where can we stay?
Who wants to join us for a pint?

Thanks for your help!

I'll definately have a pint with you guys Smile

I don't know if I can put you up, it depends on my re-exam schedule/work-schedule/ton of other things.

In any case, you should definately put Dutchieland on your list.

Germany? Check. My room is small, but I could put you up in Leipzig for a couple of days. A host city, too! I will have my final examination in summer, though, but I should be able to fit you in. From here, it isn't far to Prague, so if you plan on visiting that beautiful city, give me a shout.

What to see? If you want to sample Middle Europe, definitely check out the big cities, because that's where the life is at. Vienna, Prague, Paris is a great start. Make sure you see Amsterdam and Brussels, too (even though Brussels is in Belgium, it's where the European Union has its center). For Germany, I'd advise you to see four regions: Berlin, Munich, the Ruhr area (Cologne), and one of the eastern cities -- Dresden or Leipzig. Konstanz (on the southern border) is a good place as any if you want to cross into Switzerland, which definitely advisable too. Hanover, also a host city, isn't very beautiful but has its spots and is very accessible.

Travelling in Europe is best done by train. If you have enough time and plan on seeing a lot check out the InterRail-tickets available for different regions -- although afaik, InterRail is only available to Europeans, so your option is Eurail, which is slightly more expensive. You should check out if you can travel cheaper from place to place by buying train tickets directly. Depending on the amount of travel you want to do, a railpass might be cheaper, though.

Drop me a line. I'm always happy to help!

probably some vintage tournament during that time in dutchieland as well. Come meet us head on hehe.

When i have moved my space will have diminished but when i am at the same place we could do some random draft and you could probably have a place to stay for a few days.

One more thing, where should you go to get cheap international flights?  I've heard of travelzoo.com, but that's about it.

Just wanted to give an update.  I've been relaxing in Copenhagen the last couple days.  Good city, great women.

Although my brother couldn't make it, me and two friends will be traveling around Germany.  The rough itinerary (after I pick up my friend at the airport tomorrow) is: Hamburg, Amsterdam, Heidelberg, Munich, (maybe Prague) and Berlin.  We have accomodations in Germany and a car, so if people are around and want to meet up for a pint, don't be a stranger.

Cheers,

Stephen

Just one small remark, Amsterdam definately is not part of Germany. I would offer to stay at my place for a night but at this time my bathroom and toilet are being molested and hopefully made again soon, but right now its a mess.

Send me a pm or something if ye wanna meet up somewhere in holland. (for example, when will you all be in Amsterdam)

Ok, on my final hours here in Berlin before the big game.

Sorry to BigMac, Dozer, and iLL, but I just couldn't pull together the communications to meet up.

Here's the QnD, more to come-

Props-
Women of Copenhagen, an army of blonde super models on bicycles
Autobahn, try driving 180 k/h and having a VW golf blow by you like you were standing still
Hamburg, awesome clubbing, cool people
Garmisch, frickin' mountains
Germany Nat'l team, host cup may win?
Munich, where slowing down is having only a half liter of 8% beer

Slops-
Amsterdam, I'm not much of a stoner, and we had bad weather, but I'm sure the dutch have so much more to offer
80k zones on the autobahn
7 hr drive back to airport after partying in Berlin...
