Thirteen people ventured to Superstars to battle for the top prize. While many more could and should have come, there was still a hefty reward for the champion.

There were four rounds of swiss with a cut to top four. Standings after the swiss:

Top 4:
Eric Campusano vs. Jeff Huang
Brent Peterson vs. David Ochoa

Top 2:
David Ochoa vs. Eric Campusano

Champion:
David Ochoa

The Prizes:
1st: $150 credit
2nd: $75 credit
3rd/4th: $50 credit

As usual, 100% of the entry fee went back to the payout. Please come back next month (Sunday, September, 20, 2009) along with your friends for more Vintage fun. Starting this week, Superstars will be hosting its weekly "Thursday Night Vintage" tournaments. These tournaments will begin at 7:00 PM and will have an entry fee of $7 (I will double-check regarding the entry fee).

While turnout wasn't that great, but the tourney was smoothly ran and most of the usual are there.

I played gwb beats.  Feel really naked without U cards.  Everytime when my opponents cast Ancestral, Time Walk, or FoW I feel bit sad on the inside.

Also played a lot of games vs. Tez with Brent and LSV.  Didn't do so well on the games where I didn't draw my accelerators and Null Rods, which is practically 80% of the games we played.  So in the top 4 I mulled aggressively for those type of hands, but still got outpowered by the U cards.

Game 1 against Campusano on the play I Thoughtseized him, he FoW'ed, then Ancestral.  Then FoW my Null Rod turn 2.  Then he Time Walked into Bob.  When I Thoughtseize him for the 2nd time, he was holding Thrist, Drain, Drain.  I definitely feel like my opener, Thoughtseize, Wasteland, Null Rod, 2x Lands, Pridgemage, and Mindcensor was strong enough, but just simply outclassed and outpowered.  Upon reflecting, mistake I made was probably not playing Mindcensor turn 3 instead of guy + Wasteland.  And that was why I was bit grumpy at myself in game 2, wasn't made at you Bob into Mystical and Tinker me out 2 turns later.

Game 2 he mulled to 6 and it wasn't even close.  I had a similar type of hand in game 1 as in turn 1 and 2 play, and I drew into a beater and it went all the way.

Game 3 I had 2 lands (waste + fetch), 2x Rod, 2x Goyf, and 1x Bob.  And I ultimately mulled that hand after thinking... no turn 1 play, by turn 2 he can either have FoW or Drain up.  I kept on getting these hands against Luis and I just didn't end up winning much of it (though this one has 2x Null Rod), so I must mulled.  But my mull to 6 was the same... but it had Mindcensor, Bob, Null Rod, Wasteland, and 2 fetches, so good enough for 6.  Well, as it turns out, he played turn 1 Oath.  And I just didn't draw my Pridemage, plus he FoW my Null Rod.  Then he proceed to play Fact, Gift, and Mystical for Yawgwill and just bent me over hard.

But it was good.  I got home around 6:30, just enough time to catch dinner with my aunt and cousin from Taiwan.

And on the sidenote, Superstars will be running vintage on Thursday nights now again
.  YEEHAW! Good thing they switched it back, because attendance was shit when they changed it to Sunday.  Hopefully the Thursday Vintage will revitalize ^_^

As a math and physics major that has received dean's honors, i can tell you that seven minus five is one for very large values of five. Wink

Jeff,

It's interesting to read your results with GWB Beats.

Did you feel that you needed an answer to Inkwell?
