First off, I’d like to thank everybody who came out to Selden for N.Y.S.E. VI. It was great to see both regulars and new faces. We had 33 players come out for the main Vintage event. With a 5K in northern Jersey, a PTQ in Massachusetts, and other smaller events, it was a good to know that we still had so many dedicated Vintage competitors. With such a solid core, things bode well for N.Y.S.E. VII.
The Complete Metagame Breakdown:
Keeper: 2 Dredge: 6 Iona Oath: 2 Dragon Oath: 2 Tidespout Oath: 1 Tezzeret: 3 Dark Times: 2 MUD: 4 Noble Fish: 2 Two Card Monte: 2 Red Shops: 2 TPS: 2 5CStax: 2 U/R Landstill: 1
As expected, Dredge comprised a serious portion of the field at roughly 20%. The deck has grown resistant to hate, versatile and much faster than prior incarnations. Dredge will remain a serious competitor in the field, as it seems as though all the “answers” thrown at it have problems of their own. Oath retained a considerable presence in the field, clocking in at just under 17% of the field. Workshops, with their newfound Lodestone friend, clocked in just under an astonishing 27% of the field. While Shops did take the event down, it’s tough to call it a good day for Mishra, as only 2 of the Workshop decks made top 8. The issue from the last event – an undefined field, seems to be clearing up. Oath decks failed to place in the top 8 and it seems as though the field is developing into a fight between Bazaars and Workshops. Tezzeret has considerably dropped in popularity, with good reason. In the coming weeks we will see if the Shop builds are able to combat Dredge effectively. Finally, it will be very interesting to see if we witness a rebirth of TPS. While the Dredge decks have gotten faster, a minimal amount of disruption may buy TPS the turn or two necessary to establish a win.

The Sportsmanship prize of a Misty Rainforest went to “Big Rob” Lawrence. Rob has been an active member of the Suffolk Vintage community, and has been both an enthusiastic and gentlemanly competitor. Congratulations Rob! The No Proxy prize of a wolf shirt went to Ralph Parsinitz, who not only had no proxies, but had a (from what I saw) fully Beta’d/Foil’d out deck. Congratulations Ralph, I’m still blinded by the sight of it all! The 9th place prize of 30 Vizzerdrix’s, 8 of which were autographed by the top 8, went to Brandon Jones. Brandon missed top 8 on breakers. May your Vizzerdrix’s bring you better luck next time. I hope everyone’s looking forward to the 9th place prize for March, as the winner will be able to remove all the lands from your yard at least 69 times!
While the report took some time to get up this time, because of the incredible travelling decklists, that won't be the case for March. The points standings for the Player of the Year race have been updated, and a link back here has been added to the Facebook site for Stax Exchange tournaments. A since thanks goes out to our judge, Brian Paskoff, Gil, Frank and Dave of Brothers Grim, Nick Coss, for providing prize support and being a genuinely awesome guy, and to all the gents who came out to play some Vintage. It was a great day of Vintage on Long Island, and I hope to see you all come March 20th.
