Nick "Prospero" Detwiler understands Vintage like few others and has been long on the scene and on TheManaDrain.com. Today, he discusses all flavors of MUD and how it defines the metagame today. Click me!

I'll jump in and start off with saying this article was the best I've seen written regarding Workshop theory in ages!

Thanks Marius. There's some stuff missing from section VI that will be included on TMD as soon as the article goes off the StarCity main page. I spent a fair amount of time writing this, so I hope you guys enjoy.

Nice article man. It's seriously awesome to see new faces writing vintage stuff, particularly people, (like yourself) that are really into the format, and really know what they're talking about. It's sweet to see this, even if it's only a one-shot, but I'd love to read more from you in the future ... I still think Null Rod is criminally underrated though

I thought this article was great! I am new to Vintage and the game scenarios with MUD Prison and the use of the stack were great. I am looking forward to the "missing stuff" from section VI to help improve my Vintage play with and against Shops.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I'd consider writing something once in a while, but I just can't do what you two do - in putting out content every week, or every two weeks. To top it off, you both do it so well... And yeah, Null Rod is underrated, haha.

Hey Nick, great article! One thing - I have like a flu or something so I lack the ability to sit and read the whole thing at this moment in time - but why do you like Razormane > Karn - in your list? Things I like: - You indirectly address why maze of ith = out. - You discuss spell order excellently. Also, can I borrow a playset of shops for BoM? I'll gladly put up collateral in the form of beta power or other such rarities.

To quickly sum up Razormane - he's an aggressively costed four turn clock that clears the way for himself and other beaters. If resolved early he can put an opponent off the Trygon Predator plan. He eats opposing Lodestone Golem's for breakfast, lunch and dinner. He kills Welders, Dark Confidants and more. My Workshops may already be going to France, but if they're not, I'll lend them to you. We'll talk.

@Prospero, Take care of those shops there bro, they used to be mine ... sending them to France is horrible and will mess up the mojo (they'll start surrendering on you) if it's not backed up by you wielding them and visiting Holland!

I found your choice of Razormane Masticore very interesting, and I like the idea. I was wondering if you have tested Molten-Tail Masticore? It has a similar ability that can go to the dome as well as creatures, and the regeneration would make it difficult to remove. I know the damage requires a cost and can be handled with null rod and you wouldn't always have a creature card in the graveyard, but with enough mana and a creature card in the yard, you may be able to hit a Jace the turn you play it or kill it in response to the unsummon. Not sure if it would be any better than Razormane, but curious if you tested it.

Molten Tail Masticore is cool, but the activation is kind of tough - you're (obviously) unable to use your Workshops to pay for the 4 mana damaga activation. It stinks to lose cards to Masticores in general, but the Razormane will at least do his damage without the drawback of having to pay for it.

Thanks for the reply, not playing shops much (and new to Vintage in general), I didn't think of the trouble of getting the activation cost with MUD, I guess I am so used to playing Drain decks. I do like the Razormane tech though, cool idea. What matchups and game states do you find them to be most effective, and which ones are they liabilities and you side them out?
