In Episode 8 of the #SeriousVintage podcast we invite Jake Hilty (@TuringTested) to join us and talk a little about non-blue aggro-control in Vintage. Jake is an aggro aficionado, and recently wrote an article for Mana Deprived on the transfer of Jund to Legacy, along with the banning of Bloodbraid Elf in Modern. Geoff Moes (@ThallidTosser) and I (@GrandpaBelcher) will be tossing out questions about non-blue dudesweats. We’ll also talk about the January Banned and Restricted List update, the February Team Serious Open (this past weekend, unfortunately, though Jake did T4 with Enchantress), and cocktails! http://www.eternalcentral.com/?p=3534Here’s the timestamped table of contents for your listening ease and enjoyment. 00:28 – January B&R Update: Much Ado About Nothing 05:55 – Happy Vintage Aggro Control (No Blues Allowed) 41:13 – Prepping for the TSO in Sandusky, Ohio 47:47 – Seriously Drinking a Lot of Cocktails 52:18 – Outro Total runtime: 57:35 If you have any comments, awesome! Let us know here or in the article forums or on Twitter.

Great podcast!
If you like ginger beer as a mixer, amaretto is my personal favorite liqueur to mix with it.

Thanks for this! Great. And by the way, if you enjoy the taste of whiskey, and lean more towards alcoholic fundamentalism, try making an Old Fashioned the vintage way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ccqDlu0kuI

@psyburat Wow man, that is a sweet drink, i am too much a fan of the barrel forged flavors of Dark Rum and Whiskey to go switch to a liqueur but I bet I have some friends that would be super into that drink. My sister is also a really big fan of Moscow Mules and those can hit the spot if you like Ginger Beer.
@boggyb Bonded Rye, apparently Rachel Maddow is a badass. That would be pretty good I bet, I like the citrus flavor from muddling the sugar and bitters with the orange, but I could probably get down on the Old Fashioned Old Fashioned. I pretty much will drink any cocktail with limited mixers involving whiskey (the most delicious liquor!).

Trust me, the citrus flavor you get from the lemon peel activation is more than enough. Especially with a sweet Irish whiskey. Also, try different bitters -- orange bitters in an old fashioned, c'est magnifique. A teaspoon of real honey instead of a sugar cube, too, is a nice touch.

Rachel Maddow is not a badass. Bonded rye is simply rye that is bottled in bond, which means that it must have been aged in a bonded warehouse for at least 4 years at 100 proof or higher (per the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897). E.H. Taylor (a great nephew of former US President Zachary Taylor) was among those that were politically connected and who led the drive to formalize standards for whiskey production and labeling before the turn of the century, and he and some other producers huddled with legislators to pass the law. The rye she is using in the video is Rittenhouse 100 proof, which is probably the best rye value to be commonly found (a bottle is about $20, and tastes as good or better than most other ryes two to three times the price). If your Old Fashioned has any fruit in it, you're doing it wrong. The Old Fashioned has become bastardized over the past 100 years, adding random and intrusive elements of fruit and disgusting maraschino cherries, but the original was very simple, and was essentially just a glass of whiskey with a dot of sugar to take the edge off the whiskey. It's still supposed to taste like whiskey. Interestingly, what's presented is a whiskey Old Fashioned, but in some locales (Wisconsin, in particular), if you ask for an Old Fashioned you are likely to get it served to you with brandy instead of the whiskey.
