Hi

None of you must know me, but I'm one of the most respected Vintage player in Brazil.
I know that it means nothing... expecialy in here, where Vintage is almost dead, with a couple of ~10 person tournaments a month.

I'll start introducin myself. I'm Thiago (PizzaMan in here and in Brazilian Foruns, and Natsume_Shin in SCG and MOTL). I play Magic since ~96, but I stoped, sold/trade all my garbage, and just got back in the game on 2002.

Then I started to play Standard, and quickly moved to Vintage, after read about GAT. I used to own a LoA, and bought a Ancestral just to play GAT, and I was happy =D

Then DCI restricted Gush, I found out that the girl I was flerting was dating an other guy, I got sad and sold both top cards.

But things change, I started to date that *amazing* girl, got happy again, and get back to Vintage. =D

I used to own almost the hole P9 set (even if it cost 2-3x more than to the rest of the world, and I needed a full month paycheck to buy a single Mox), some $hops, LoA, etc... but, eventually, had to sold'em all.
Things change, I broke up with that *amazing* girl, moved from my parents house, and started a real life with an other girl...

But after paying all the bills that was left from the move (and now with a higher paycheck), I got back into bussiness (again =D).

I bought a Mox Jet and started to organize a tornament in here, trying to ressurect the Brazilian Vintage scene.
It took me some weeks to find a place, find a date, find nice prizes, find people to play :p.
And the 1st place would take the Mox.
Entry fee was about R$25.00 (~US$12.00)

A LOT of people got excited, but the pre-release date, anounced a week before the tournament, was on the exacly same date =/

Some people went to the pre-release tournaments, other just didn't came.... and the tournament held 16 people only... and it easn't enought to pay for the Mox... so the prize structure went this way:

1st: playset of Tropical Island
2nd: Playset of BE REBs, or playset of BE BEBs, or Foil Vampiric Tutor, or Bayou
3rd: Same as 2nd, without 2nd's choice
4th: Same as 3rd, without 3rd's choice
5th: Japanese Dandan =D

I know the prize structure sucked... but I was expecting 30+ person...

Well... we did 5 rounds of Swiss, with Top4 Playoffs.

I played UBA, because I recently adquired Bazaars and was in a mood to play Uba or Ichorid. As it is the only proxie tournament arround, I wasn't going to waste the chance to play with $hops Wink

So I'll play Ichorid on the next non-proxie tournament ^_^

Ok, I was organizing, but we had a judge and I was only a player during the day Wink

My list was exacly the same that Vroman played in GenCon. I spend the hole week before the tournament working until late and going to college, so I had no time to test anything now, nor any change.

It was like this:

UBA Stax

4 Mishras Workshop *proxie*
4 Bazaar of Baghdad
1 Stripmine
3 Wasteland
2 Rishadan Port
3 Mountain
3 Barbarian Ring
1 Tolarian Academy
1 Mox Ruby *proxie*
1 Mox Sapphire *proxie*
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Pearl *proxie*
1 Mox Emerald *proxie*
1 Black Lotus *proxie*
1 Mana Crypt
1 Mana Vault
1 Sol Ring

4 Goblin Welder

1 Solem Simulacrum
1 Duplicant

1 Trinisphere
4 Chalice of the Void
4 Crucible of Words
4 Uba Mask
3 Null Rod
4 Smokestack
4 Tangle Wire *MVP!*

SideBoard
4 Granite Shard
3 Tormods Crypt
3 Viashino Heretic
3 Jester's Cap
2 Duplicant

Round 1 - Bruno Tiete playing ??

He starts with a City and a Sapph, and I think he may be playing any weird 4-5C Control, and I start playing around Drains. I start with a Chalice for 1, that is good both againt Control or Combo.
I play some counter baits, that just enter, and soon he scoops for some Crucible+Wasteland or something.

Even not knowing exacly was he was playing, I thought he might have 3- Kill Conditions into his deck. (B.Wish + DSC if Gifts, and Tendrils if Combo)
-3 Null Rod
+3 Jester's Cap

I kept the Chalices because Chalice for 1 broke him nicely on game 1, so I think it may work again, even if I can't play it for zero before he plays his first turn.

He goes City-go.
I played Mox Emerald, Mana Crypt, Chalice for zero, Tolarian Academy, tapped Tolarian and Emerald and played Jester's Cap. Before it resolves, he entered his scoop phase Wink

/o/

I ask him which deck is he playing, and he tells me he's playing Grim Long. =D

1-0 2-0

Nice Wink I won pretty fast and walk arround to see the other decks in there. There was 2 Ichorids, ~3 UW Fishs, 1 WtG (the one with 9 strips, that won Waterbury #9)

Round 2 - Edu Telefônica playing Ichorid

During my few playtests, it's like 0-100 on game one. And I lost pretty fast.
On game 2 I start with a Tormod's Crypt, that slows him down A LOT. He did not started with neither Needle nor Rod, so he dredges slowly. I took my time and lock him under Trinisphere, CoW, Strip, G.Shard, Welder, another Tormod's Crypt and a Duplicant beatdown =D
On game 3 he kepts a "I HATE CRYPT" hand, but with no gas. He thought that he could easily draw into gas, but he didn't.
The game was like this:
He: Chalice, City, Needle (Welder)
Me: B.Ring, Sol Ring (with 2 welders in hand)
He: Stripmine, Null Rod
Me: Welder (lost the land drop. I was holding 1 Mox, 1 Lotus and some artifacts)
He: Strip you, go.
Me: Draw Mountain, play it and Welder, and started the beatdown =D

And I won on turn 4-5 after time O_o

Side:
-4 Chalice of the Void
-3 Null Rod
-4 Uba Mask
-1 Bazaar of Baghdad
+4 Granite Shar
+3 Tormods Crypt
+2 Duplicant
+3 Viashino Heretic

2-0 4-1

Round 3 - Maximum playing Worse than GAT

Game 1 he start with Emerald, Land, Kudzu, then Exploration, Land Land, and that's a game.
On Game 2 I keep a solid hand with 2 Tangle Wires, that buy me time to find a Welder and 2 Duplicants, and it eats his beaters, and soon it goes FTW.

Btw, the sideboard:
+2 Duplicant
+3 Viashino Heretic
+3 Tormod's Crypt
-4 Uba Mask
-3 Null Rod
-1 Bazaar of Baghdad

To Game 3 thare is just 5 min left, and I start with a Trinisphere, and soon some goodies, but we run out of time.

2-0-1 5-2-1

Round 4 - Anderson (MageMaster) playing 5C UBA Stax

We IDed to save our brains from a Stax Mirror =D

2-0-2 5-2-1

Round 5 - ?? playing BG Nether Void

He was 2-2, with no chance of Top4ing, (there was 1 3-0-1 and 3 3-1s), so he conceded =D Nice guy ^^

We played and he beated me in 2-1.

Game one he did:

Bayou + Dark Ritual + Black Lotus + Nantuko Shade + Nether Void

I kept a Workshopless hand, and had no time to do anything.

Game 2 I UbaLock him with 2 Welders and one Mask, buy some time with 2 Wires, and soon I draw into a Duplicant.
In game 3 I lose to 2 Hyppies O_O

(Flying r0x!)

3-0-2 6-4-1

After the 5 Rounds, the standings were:
(nicknames from LigaMagic.com, our Brazilian Magic site)

1 Anderson "MageMaster" - 13 (5C Uba Stax)
2 Milton "Psycho" - 12 (UW Fish)
3 Thiago "PizzaMan" - 11 (UBA Stax)
4 Cleber "Maximum" - 10 (WTG)
5 João "Icy_Manipulator" - 9  (UW Fish)
6 Bruno V Santos - 9 (Grim Long)
7 Mateas de Freitas - 9 (não lembro)
8 Daniel S Taranta - 7 (Grim Long)
9 Patrick Dylan - 6 (não lembro)
10 Felipe M Alberto - 6 (não lembro)
11 Aparecido "Cidããããão" - 6 (UW Fish)
12 Bruno "PokéGótico-EMO-Fuzzy" - 3 (Frigorid)
13 Eduardo "Telefônica" - 3 (Frigorid)
14 Felipe Seton - 1 (não lembro)
15 Julio "Nuclear" - 1 (Oath)
16 Leonardo "LeoZerah" - 1 (Gift's Grim Long)

The Top4 Payoffs were:

1 Anderson "MageMaster" x 4 Cleber "Maximum"
3 Thiago "PizzaMan" x 2 "Milton "Psycho"

On game 1 I just got stomped by a huge Jötun Grunt!

On game 2 he plays a early Kataki, and I try to save all I can with 2 Lands and a Mox. Do some Welder tricks during upkp to bring the Mox back. Keep 7 cards in graveyard and then kill his Kataki with B.Ring =)
Then I win shortly after.

On game 3 I started with 2 Welders, some lands (no Workshop) and a Simulacrum. He play 2 Seal of Cleansing, that "stiffle"s my welders 2 times. He plays Kataki, but I had a lot of lands and payed for everything. I killed it again with B.Ring, hold his Grunt on my Wires and soon cleaned his table with Smokestack. He scoops shortly after.

On the Final round, I played the WTG Again.

He won the dice and starts with Fastbond + Wasteland
I try Workshop-Crucible, but it got countered by a PROXY daze.
When I came back, after 2 hrs of crying on the bathroom, he Ghost Quarterer My $hop, and keep both out of land.
I start building my table with Welders and Bazaars, and he keep wasting my non-mountain lands. Soon he is forced to crush both his ghost quarters to find a colored mana (I wasted his Tropical on early turns), so he can LftL his lands back. But he eventualy conceds to a bunch of artifacts, Wires, Smokestacks and Duplicants.

On game 2 I came busted, with $hop, Crypt and Smokestack (with a mana floating this time Wink), next turn I waste his land and drop Wire. On turn 3 I drop Bazaar and CoW. He tries to Hurkyll my table, but I had a Black Lotus and a Simulacrum in hand and put a defense for his Vinelasher Kudzu, besides the usual artifact locks.
Soon I draw into Duplicant and he scoops Wink

E ended up 5-0-2, 10-5-1 in games.

That's not very impressive, but it was enought to win the tournament Wink

I got the payset of Tropical Islands, which was nice... these were mine and I needed to sold them to the tournament Wink

The good thing is that I learned to play with the deck, and I really think that Vroman did a great job on it!
It's so... perfect! Everything runs so smothly well.

I had never played with Tangle Wires before, and I just LOVED THEM!
They fit so well in the deck. I needed to stop Jötun Grunt inumerous times with Wire + Rishadan Port.

Soon I'll buy myself some $hops and some Power to play with this deck on non-proxie tournaments.

I know my report just sucked, but thanks for reading Wink
See ya!

In your metagame, Ubastax might be the perfect deck to play.  Long and Fish are very good matchups with a proper sideboard and low mistake count on behalf of the Ubastax player.  Congratulations on winning with my favorite deck of all time.

Your analysis on the matchups is very good - the next time you attend a tournament, consider writing a more detailed report, as I think Ubastax players everywhere might be able to learn from your matchup analysis particularly.

Nice report. It's always good to hear about events outside of USA and Europe.

Thanks for all the replys!
I'm a big fan of all of you, guys Wink

And I didn't expect to win, so I didn't take notes... and I thought I would only write the report for the brazilian website.

Probably we will have another proxy tournament (I still have a Jet and a Ancestral Recall to set as prize) soon. Then I'll take notes to write a proper report, even if I don't win.

It's good to know that you apreciate foreign reports Wink

Somebody tell Chapin how counterbalance works?

"Of all the major Vintage archetypes that exist and have existed for a significant period of time, Oath of Druids is basically the only won that has never won Vintage Championships and never will (the other being Dredge, which will never win either)." - Some guy who does not know vintage....
