lol, fuck SCG imo. since when is Philly their area?

It looks unprofessional on your part to plan an event without talking to someone else on their event. An event can either fail or flourish based on a relationship like this. This might not be starcity's area, but its still their weekend. Where Mike planned this event barely 3 weeks ago.

For the record, here is how this event came to be.

I was asked by VGXPO to run these events for them. They first approached me at the Game Core event. At that time, I told them that SCG already had an event going on that same day. The conversation ended there.

Then, about two weeks after that, they e-mailed asking again. They said they had a large playing area that they needed filled and still wanted to run Magic events. I brought up the SCG event again. They said that SCG had booked their event up against VGXPO for the 2nd straight year. VGXPO had run Magic events at last years con, and that they had gotten players cross over from SCG to their events. They said they just wanted an outside sourse (me) to run the events, plus after Game Core they knew I had an established network. They made it seem like there would not be a major conflict with SCG. So, I created and posted the events.

All seemed fine, until I received a phone call this morning from the President of SCG who was pretty pissed about the conflicting events. He said that he had not seen the events postings until shortly before he called. He was also not going to allow volunteers from VGXPO to hand out coupons outside of his event, and would have security remove anyone that did.

So, after a few consulting phone calls, I made the choice to cancel the events. The logic was that I have to live with SCG 12/365, VGXPO is a 3 day, once a year event. It seemed prudent at this juncture, to choose the better side of valor, and not make an enemy. Yes, I may have pissed off some players as Joe pointed out, and I apologize if plans had been made, and now are changed. But for US to have events in the future, I felt I needed to keep the peace.

Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

I see where you're coming from, but who are they to ask you to cancel an event ONE DAY ahead of time? Pretty ridiculous imo. fwiw, I was gonna go to you tomorrow and SCG on Sunday, but after this I'm skipping the SCG on Sunday.

I don't blame you for being pissed about it either, especially if you pre-paid for tickets to the convention. And your right, Star City has no right to ask someone to cancel their event just cause they monopolized that entire weekend. I completely agree with what you are saying. BUT...

Sucks it happens this way, but it looks like you learned a hard lesson on event planning: communication from all parties is important. You knew the Star City event was going on the same weekend, so instead of trusting your friends at VGXPO, you should of went on the initiative and called Star City personally or never planned the event. I can go on from my own experience of event planning, but that'll just be unnecessary. Just take what you have learned and impliment it into future events.

Sucks it happens this way, but every event planner learns this lesson eventually. And no matter how good your friends are, always go with your gut instinct.

They didn't ask me to cancel the event, that was my choice. In fact he said go ahead and run your events, let's just be civil and not try to steal each others players. But I could kind of sense an underlying tone of, we'll get you down the line. What I did fear was that they could in the future, schedule an event at a SCG friendly venue on the same day I schedule an event. And being the giant they are, always out do me on prize support. I think this was where the VGXPO guy was smart in that by asking me to run the events, any blood spilled would come back on me and not them.

actually doesn't matter that much to me tbh. I just dislike the whole thing on principle. I didn't even think about buying the event tickets in advance. If I had, I would be legitimately pissed off to no end.

Isn't that a monopoly? Just for the future, I will support your event before I support starcity's even if they do give better prizes.

I mean, to be fair it's  all about management/marketing.   They're competing with you.  They could have just not contacted the T.O., ran the event, called security, and crushed them on attendance.    It's competition in the marketplace.   It doesn't matter if it's another business or not, if someone is going to cut into SCG's market share, of course SCG is going to have something to say about it.

Well to be fair since you don't know everything about the world you're an idiot, see what I did there?

The thing is they should have allowed him to still run the event instead of calling him and telling him he couldn't run it. The very act of of a business calling another business to tell them that they have to do something does not jive with the ethical way business should be handled. What should have happened was both events were on the same day and both were competing for players. Thereby, the players actually have the choice and really if you think about the prize structure, paying 35 for an event with 30 players to win a 300 dollar prize is better than trying to grind though 200 players at 25 dollars and a chance at 2k. Like if you win, you only get 2k... I mean... that's terrible if we want to talk about tournament organizers running shit and being fair to players. However, SCG blatantly disrespected Mike as well as potential customers (I mean I know I have an SCG account that I won't be renewing) when they decieded to remove competition from the market place. To be honest, SCG this is Philly and we'll fucking kill you, were crazy, get the fuck off our property and stop trying to step in a place you don't belong. Remember all those wars fought in the last 300 years well most of them were fought because someone was in the wrong place at the wrong time and one person was obviously crazier than the other. So take those words wisely and try not to fuck up again.

P.S. for the reference I wasn't going to either event.

Verbal warning for flaming, flame-baiting, profanity, and threatening violence.  This kind of stuff absolutely does not belong on TMD.  -Eastman
