So needless to say the night before I was up til 2 am pondering on what I wanted to play. As most people in my area know I am notorious for playing landstill almost every tournament, I wanted to switch it up this time bc I like doing that from time to time. Previous to thirst being restricted I consistantly played a tezz deck that was focused on building up storm and wind milling a big empty the warrens. And since lodestone was printed it made me not want to play it much more so I decided to play etw tezz and just up the amount of shops hate. And blue bells are notorious for having good players playing good blue decks so I needed a good amount of control as well So heres how it went and the list I came up with below...

Empty The warrens Tezz~

4 force
3 drain
2 pierce
2 seize
2 empty the warrens
1 Jace the mindsculptor
1 Gifts Ungiven
1 tinker
1 blightsteel
1 key
1 vault
3 nights whisper
1 DT
1 vamp
1 mystical
1 scrolll
2 chain of vapor
1 hurkyls
1 rebuild
1 recall
1 walk
1 brainstorm
1 top
1 yawg will

5 mox
1 vault
1 crypt
1 ring
1 lotus
1 tolarian
4 delta
1 tarn
1 rainforest
2 island
1 snow island
1 swamp
3 sea
2 volc

SB~

3 reb
1 volc
2 ingot chew
1 pyroclasm
3 hurkyls
4 leyline
1 jailer

So that’s the deck. I always get criticized by people for playing nights whisper and not dark confidant, but I have my reasons. First off I like being different and playing different decks. I will not play a meta game deck or build a deck that I see win. On top of that reason, I like having cards NOW not waiting for them. Plus with dark confidant you may just lose by it, where I can whisper myself and be sure on how much life I am going to lose. The deck wins many games by the means of sand bagging artifact mana in your hand and playing empty for a mid range amount while controling the game. Of course you can get a lucky hand with lotus etc. I like etw bc its good vs jace, and good vs shops post bouncing there board. Seems nowadays everyone plays jace.decs or shops so that’s that. Finally this deck can simply out control most of the blue decks in the format, imo oath is trashy and most jace decks are 4c with minimal counter magic compared to my package. So heres the report…(please forgive my memory it fails me a lot if im slightly off on some things)

RD 1 ~ RW hate (Mike)

Game 1~ He’s on the play and goes plateau pass. I have a good hand with something like mystical, force, drain, mox, whisper, island, delta. I whisper into sapphire which was nice, I eot mystical for tinker….then turn 3 (I think) tinker for blightsteel with fow blue card and drain in hand. He goes end of my turn path so I drain, then on his turn he plays a 2nd path which I force. Then plays runed halo naming big dude. That slowed me down then drew another swords effect a few turns later then I proceed to lose
Game 2~ I side in pyroclasm…Im on the play and mull to 5…he keeps a 7. My 5 is will, vamp, jet, fetch, empty. He plays land go. I eot vamp for lotus. Following turn I play lotus, jet, will, replay lotus, vamp for walk, and empty for 12 guys then he loses
Game 3~ I mystical for tinker early with force in hand and it wins
2-1 WIN

RD 2~4c Jace vault deck ( Joe)

Game 1~…I mull to 5 he keeps a 7. He plays turn 1 lotus, mox, land, then passes. I have an ok hand not bad not good. I think I had whisper, mox, land, scroll, and something irrelivent. He plays recall on my turn drains a spell plays jace then wins in a little
Game 2~ In comes 3 reb and volc... I mull to 6 and have a pretty good hand with recall I end up playing jace in a few turns with fow back. I end up having jace out and 3 rebs in hand and he has key out with a fetch and he sacks the win like a champ and I have rebs so that was lame
0-2 LOSS

RD 3~Metal worker MUD (Josh)

Game 1~ I win the roll (which is clutch) My grip is island, fetch, crypt, pierce, mystical, mox, whisper. I whisper into sapphire. I pierce his turn 1 wire, then mystical upkeep for tinker cast on my turn and win
Game 2~ I side in 2 chew, 3 hurks, volc. We have a weird game where he plays chalice at 1 and 0 turn 1 and we both have hands with short mana. I had lotus, ruby, crypt, sol ring, scroll, island, hurks. So chalice hurt. Neither of us saw any lands for like 10 turns back and forth with him sitting on thorn and 2 chalice. I draw chewer and chew chalice at 0 play a bunch of mana and since we have been discarding for a lot of turns my gy is realllly good and I have will in hand. So I eot hurks, then play yawg will for the key vault win
2-0 WIN

So at this point I am 2-1 and I am assuming I need to win 1 more then just draw into the top 8 from there…

RD 4~Dredge (Mark)

Game 1~ I cant get key vault fast lol
Game 2~ I have leyline, scroll, mystical, jet, 3 land….I play leyline he has turn 1 collesium and chain of vapor…I eot for tinker then tinker for poison dude and win
Game 3~ I have fow, leyline, jailer, brainstorm, mox, 2 land…He plays chalice at 0 and slows me down I have to much hate as he cant get enough answers after I drop 2nd leyline etc
2-1 WIN

I end up having to play round 4 out bc me and my opponent are low on standings and cant draw…seems cool

RD 5~Bob Tezz (Dom)

Game 1~ I have a decent hand and empty for 10 like turn 4 which gets there
Game 2~ I side in 3 reb and volc… He keeps a questionable hand with remora and 1 land. I have recall, fow, reb, land, land, pierce, mox…then I draw thoughtseize. And he just gets out controlled this game by a lot and I win
2-0 WIN

Top 8!!!! HELLLLLLLLLLL YEAH!

T8~UBRW turbo bomberman tezz etc (Vito)

Game 1~ I don’t have force and he goes lotus, sapphire, recall, fow, jace, etc, etc, etc…I lose bad
Game 2~ I side in 3 reb, volc, and 1 chewer (he is playing a lot of fast mana and tezzerets so thought 1 chew might help) I have a good hand with fow, drain, reb, land, pierce, seize. I draw allllllllllll lands and counters most of game and key somewhere in between then end up just countering all of his spells and I get key vault.
Game 3~ He plays turn 1 tezz with 2 cards in hand. I have scroll, seize, reb, mox, land, whisper, and x….I play reb and his 2 cards don’t include force and blue card…so I proceed to just control the entire game pretty one sided and win.

T4~Oath (Rob)

Game 1~ I kind of forget what happens but he duress/thoughtseizes my whisper I think. This game was very uneventful and vague/boring and I end up having 4 land out, I play a lotus and mox then empty for 6….then cast the 2nd empty in my hand for 8 he pierces a copy but 12 goblins get there.
Game 2~ I side in 3 reb, volc….I have a pretty good controlling hand with force, reb, scroll, whisper, drain, ruby, fetch. This game goes on for a while but since I play a better draw engine and a decent control suite I out control him and tinker I believe for big man and poison gets there

FINALS vs JAKE GANS with Dragon….I was offered to split but wanted to win it hands down I don’t like the idea of splitting

Game 1~ I out control him. Counter a bob, he doesn’t see bazaar, then we go the distance late game and he ends up playing the combo and I interrupt it with chain of vapor so yeah and the previous turn I hardcasted blightsteel. This game was long and weird and dumb.
Game 2~ I side in 3 reb and volc….I was debating on siding in 2 leyline just to have something vs dragon but decided not to and just wanted to out control his deck. But he has early lotus for turn 1 intuition. I cast reb, then he plays jace, I upkeep vamp for reb, then I reb his jace….he then plays upk mystical for tinker and I have force and no blue card in hand so I lose…at this point I again contimplate on bringing in 2 leyline, but choose not too again.
Game 3~ My hand is REALLY good I had  sea, fetch, 2 seize, drain, reb, top….I draw into force. And out control him terribly this game pretty one sided IMO.

So in conclusion. I like this deck a lot and I feel it’s a great way to get away from playing a 4c jace deck plus I felt like this deck can out control the other blue decks in the format and it’s a nice change of pace and ppl don’t expect the cards that are played in it which is very cool! I won a ruby and loved the deck all day. Vs blue I ended up siding out 2 islands all day bc I board in 1 volc. So I go to 15 lands vs blue. I need 16 main bc lame shops. But that’s life. Great tournament Big thanks to nick for awesome prizes, and AU staff for being great guys. Awesome day overall!

Congrats Sally, well played!

There seemed to be a lot of Chain of Vapor-related punts yesterday, from Jake's in game 1 of the finals against you to apparently Ed Carey in the side event. Strange.

Your draw game 3 of the finals was just savage. Thoughtseize turns 1 and 2 just devastated poor Jakelson. You dealt something like 13 damage to yourself that game but were never in any real danger.

I on the other hand went three-and-out pretty much the entire tournament, nearly running the table in reverse. I started 0-4 before managing a win in the last round. And no, it did not come via the bye.

Jake doesn’t open on Leyline – he plays City of Brass, and then Pithing Needle on Bazaar.

No, seriously.

Nice win, Josh.  Poor Jake Ganz always gets second place, but I can definitely think of worse problems to have, lol.

Night's Whisper isn't too bad if you have basic Swamp.  The big issue was exposing yourself to wasteland just to grind through 2 cards.

Thanks paul! I guess how I look at it is, bob is kinda weak if your vs oath assuming they have oath and no orchard, it used to be better vs shops before shop started playing alot of big guys, and he doesnt draw cards now, and it seems some ppl are playing lightning bolts in not only hate decks but some key vault lists. So the fact that he doesn't draw cards NOW always bothered me, thats how I see it...and when I test gush I do not like the set back of bouncing 2 lands to justify playing it when our meta is flooded with mud it seems at times, and the deck wasn't consistant enough for me. Plus you are right I love running swamp plus islands bc I like having a great mana base vs shops. Overall I liked whisper alot and I won a blue bell side event with a nights whisper etw list a few months ago aswell. Ppl may hate on it if they want but I like it
