Warning -Extremely long apprentice log is enclosed.

This log was of game 3 in a series that started out with Dr_Nuxvomica annihilating me game one, mostly due to me keeping a chancey hand and him having a typical Stax start. I won game 2, with the trend seeming to be that the stronger start tends to give your whole game momentum - my opening hand was pure gas.  The third game turned out to be a real gem, and not because I pulled a win out of my ass - it gives some insight as to how MUD should be played, and what can be expected in the mirror match.

Both of these decks play some cards/combinations that aren't quite mainstream, but hopefully this log will also serve to shed some light on their tech.

Also what you hopefully get out of this is a sense that Workshops and Bazaars just might be interactive cards after all.

Looking at what he has on the table I choose to dig out a Welder, which rules the mirror match - and I didn't have any in my starting hand.  Gamble almost always is a sure-fire first turn Demonic Tutor in this deck, as long as you hold on to enough cards.  I played Emerald, though, so I could play whichever remained in my hand after the Gamble; Sol Ring or Mana Vault for the sole purpose of baiting the Keg

Ahhhh what an hour that was....literally. Some good games although I probably would do a different land drop in hindsight as I pitched 2 Shop's when one could have been dropped after I Balanced us to 2 lands (Karn for me,Trike for you) and then played the Wire which was the game ender in my eyes as you had 4 perms and a Smokestack at 2.

can you do something other than post the appr log? like explain what happened and why things are? you two are trying to prove how a deck can compete in the modern metagame, not how they can play against each other, and this is just useless. if you post your testings (REAL ones) against stuff like dragon, keeper, long, fish, gay/r and the such, THEN this post might have been valuable

The main intent of this post was to show you all a really long, taxing, and hard-fought game.  I fully realize that this log is hardly evidence of the viability of either deck, but I think what is apparent from the log are the decks' versatility, rogue tech, and fun factor.

I know it would be great if I could reveal a little more detail about the matchup, like starting hands and more analysis of the matchup, but honestly, with all the discarding going on and many cards being played immediately, not that much going on in this game is left to the imagination.  I did liven up the log with a few insights here and there (the bolded comments), and apologize if those aren't enough to keep your interest piqued.

As for the metagame analysis, I can pretty much tell you how my deck fares against other archetypes based on my playtesting:

1) Keeper -> even pre and post SB.
2) Fish -> even to slightly unfavorable pre and post SB.
3) Dragon -> very unfavorable pre SB, unfavorable post SB.
4) Long -> very favorable pre and post SB.
5) Suicide -> favorable pre SB, and very favorable post SB.
6) Sligh -> favorable pre and post SB.
7) GaT -> favorable pre and post SB.
8) Tog -> favorable pre and post SB.

Really the only problem matchup for this deck is Dragon, and if you are expecting a Dragon meta, then it might be worth your time to adjust your sideboard accordingly - up the Crypts to 4, and possibly side Gaea's Blessings.  Every other matchup I have encountered has usually been winnable, if a struggle at times.

Some fish/aggro weenie builds (with curiosity/standstill) have also proved extremely annoying, I must admit, although I maintain that a Bazaar build should fare better than the classic build in this matchup.  Another deck that beat up mine was a Stax build with Mindslaver and Gilded Lotus, but that deck seems to be more combo oriented, and looks like it would die horribly to Null Rod due to a distinct lack of lock components.\n\n

So, the tangle wire will remain in play with no counters on it for one turn.

Are you both finding Squee to be stronger than other cards? I find it an interesting card to consider, but my first reaction is that it is weaker than other cards (and 'yes', i understand the tempo aspect of Squee).

I think you missed the boat there as he sacrificed it to the Smokestack and not the fading....

 As far as matchups goes, either deck has not proven it is any better than the builds with the Grafted Skullcaps.The decks play completely different and are more of a personal preference as a draw engine/ yard filler.

 Honestly dropping a disruption/lock is key and the Bazaar (combined with Welder)lets you weld away quick moxen mana (that you usually use to it's fullest first) for something like a 5cc Karn/Jar. That's a pretty nice trade.The Welder becomes crucile to these tricks yes....but the Shop and Metalworker are just as vunerable to destruction leaving a 4cc draw engine artifact in hand. Add in the SB hate and artifacts become a liability with Energy Flux.

 As far as matchups goes again, I have played against numerous decks in the mini's (8 man mini's usually) and it has won me 5 mini's while playing in 7 of them.Only wish that we could get more people in these so you can witness first hand the decks in question.

 I know that I'll be trying to make it to the mini's.Will you?

I think it would be a better use of time to get some real testing against currently played archetypes. Play in a few tournaments and post reports. You wrote your deck's favorable/unfavorables matchups, and frankly, I just don't believe you. If you just played a good game and wanted to post it to show us how great it was, think first about how willing people would be to read that long ass thing to learn about it. Next time just write a paragraph about what happened. We've all played good games, reading other people's for 10 minutes isn't something most people want to do. Also, showing the versatility of two decks isn't a testament to their viabilty. Two draft decks can be versatile too.

As for my thoughts on the deck itself, I know from experience that throwing the bazaar engine into random decks just doesn't work. I don't see how throwing it into a workshop deck is any better. I've said this before (with plenty of others) that skipping land drops and replacing needed cards with 1/1 goblins isn't going to be good for the deck. But whatever, prove me wrong, go play in a real competitive tournament and post results. Don't post an apprentice log.\n\n
