Author Topic: Aggro-Control - Updated Erhnam-'Geddon  (Read 8760 times)

[This one is for you Paul.]

Ok, on Sunday, July 07, 2002 I modernized Erhnam-'Geddon - one of the major archetypes during the 'Vise' Age.

I liked a few new Aggro-Control concepts in addition to the old.

The old concepts:
Mana buddies (ie.Heads), jewellery (ie.P9), Vise, Land Tax, Disenchants, LoA, Erhnam, Factories, 'Geddon

The new philosophy:
Threshold-buddies (ie.Werebears), Null Rods, no P9, LoA, fatter-than-Erhnam, Factories, 'Geddon

Pretty simple, eh.

I built it and tested it a little bit with Lam on Friday against two of our gauntlet decks: SuiBlack and Fire/Ice.

SuiBlack seemed to be a 'bye' due to the maindeck Pro-B, Balance & Plows.

Fire/ICe was about 50/50.  But, we didn't make time to test post-SB.

Sligh was a big unknown so I sided 4 CoP: Red, just in case.

Toronto is rife with blue-based-control decks so I sided some hate: 2 Choke, 2 Defense Grids and 2 City of Solitude.  Depending on whether I have threshold or not, Morphling cannot kill anywhere from four to ten of my 22 critter threats.

The decklist:

Sunday morning (July 14) finds me still unsure whether to play this or SuiBlack 100% Legend build.  Lam, and Sean are playing identical Fire/Ice decks.  One of them is using all of my Power 9.  Lam thinks I should be playijng SuiBlack or Keeper with all that Power.  Whatever, I have savage, and rogue tech - much better than Power 9.

I hit Hairy T's for the 15-man T1.  I test SuiBlack and it slaughters the only other SuiBlack 3/4.  It eats some kind of Blue-Control.  Talk of the Dragon ensues.  I'm still not sure which to play: Sui or this Enforcer-largely-untested-thing.

I settle for the rogue Enforcer decklist with NO P9 and loan it all to LAm for his U/R Fire/Ice Control-thing.  The girl running the tourney says my deck reminds her of her Type 2 decklist.  Oh.

Match 1: Paul (aka BeBe) piloting the ferocious (and Curious) (not Gay) (well maybe a lttle) Fish

He soundly wins 2-0 and only takes all of 2 damage total - from Force of Wills.  Ow.  [A shadow of a doubt....]

Tourney: 0-0-1

Match 2: Leon piloting a (way-tech) G-W Eight Enchantress deck

I remember watching some really long turns.  Early Fastbond in the games he wins.  My lucky LD (a lone Strip and 4 'Geddon) and his bad luck wins me game 2.  His tech includes: Flickering Ward, Rancor and Auratog maindeck.  Auratog gets fat (like 26/25 or so with Trample).  He wins games 1 and 3, handily.

But, just before he reports the match results he chooses to concede games 2 & 3 to me so that he can get a draft tourney going in his store: www.hairyt.com  Wow, what a stroke of good luck and what a kind thing for Leon to do.  I'm not out of the top-4 quite yet.  Whew.

Tourney: 1-0-1

Match 3: Mike piloting a suboptimal Keeper deck

He drops a turn 1 Vise game 1.  WTF!  Ow, soon I am down to 12.  I make mana-friends happen.  Basically, I smash him hard with threshold friends.  Too many threats for too few counters.  His Abyss is my friend, too - it helps me get Threshold and 14 of my threats live in it just fine.  Nimbles, Factories, Monasteries, Enforcers.  I miss my Jade Statues and Chimerics {pout}.

Game 2 in go my 2 City of Sols and 2 Chokes.  Out came the Plows.  He drops an early Vile Consumption (read: extreme-tech) which harasses me a little.  Soonafter comes The Abyss!  He makes my threats disappear Keeper-fashion.  He errs and his Vindicate fizzles on my Enforcer [Was this impossible?]  I cast City of Solitude so I can make more threats happen, unharassed.  ZOrb hits his side of the table.  He has two Moxen and two land.  I drop a thresholded-Nantuko Monastery.  He gets smashed down to about 3.  He Mystical Tutors for.....Timetwister....and says go.  As I untap I know that I've already won.  He looks on confidenty.  I swing with my 4/4 first striking dirt.  He tries to ZOrb.  Then I turn City of Solitude for his reading pleasure.

Match 2-0
Tourney: 2-0-1

I'm still in the running for T4 - yay!

Match 4: Some guy playing a really suboptimal Braids black deck

He plays first and puts me on a falling-life clock with his Carnophage and a Negator and I suck it all up like a champ.  I drop Wumpus and he reads it a coupla' times.  Yes, it slowly dawns on him, this is real tech!  He drops a Braids in response.  We each have half a dozen permanents.  I am holding a Plow.

It is about even in the permanents-judo til I 'Geddon and start swinging with fats.

I SB in a Plow I think.  He plays first.  He drops a swamp and a 'Phage.  I draw and drop Library.  His upkeep I draw.  Handful of Nimbles and Buddies and dirt.  He drops a second swamp, Ritual, turn 2 Braids!  He has 4 permanents to my one!  I sac Library on my second turn.  Ow.  Gulp.  I drop Forest, Nimble.  Go.  He drops swamp and swings for 4.  I sac Nimble, drop a Forest and cast Werebear.  He sacs a swamp, drops a swamp and swings for 4 more.  I sac I sac a forest and cast Bird, Bird.  He sacs his 'Phage and swings again - I'm under 10.  I sac a dirt, drop a dirt and cast 'Geddon: "'Geddon for the win!"  He says: "What are you talking about?"  I say: "Nevermind.  Sorry, go."  He sacs his last permanent, Braids, then it dawns on him.

Match 2-0
Tourney: 3-0-1

I figure I'm in for sure in the Top 4.  But, Paul's Curious Fish and I are tied for the fourth slot.  It's naturally his since his record is better.  I get ready to find caffeine {too much blood in my caffeine-stream}.

Paul, it turns out lost 2-0 to Lam's Fire/Ice deck.  Fire is THAT bad for Curious Fish.  He concedes the #4 spot in top 4 of the Swiss to me.  Yes, I am stunned.  Enforcer is to be his revenge.  (Lam has won the past three tourneys you see.  So it is all about stopping him from winning)

Semi-Finals: Lam (undefeated into the Top 4) piloting his Fire/Ice

My deck gives me everything I need game 1.  It makes lil threats and buddies then Lam helps me approach threshold by countering Rods and fat threats.  His Factories hold off my weenies.  His maindeck Scrying Glass is absolutely useless as he cannot use it more than every other turn and simply cannot guess well.  Null Rod hits.  He's unable to counter enough.  Eventually, he runs out of cards and Monastery #2 rolls on for the win forcing 3 Factories to Chump.  Lam was shocked by the second Monastery because in testing he correctly remembered my deck only featured one.  He was really quiet, which is rare for LAm.

I SB out 4 Nimbles and 3 Plows for the 2 Choke, 2 City of Sol, 2 Defense Grids and 1 Null Rod.  Really bad idea imo now.  He gets an early Library and I suddenly really miss my Wastelands.  I get Wasted and my buddies get fried.  He even drops a Morphling with no untapped blue mana.   He starts to taunt me when I fail to Plow it.  How uncool is taunting?  {pout}  He goes on to Respond to my Wumpus with a Flametongue Kavu, deal it 4 damage and then Fire it, and my last hope away.

I ask Paul for advice.  The Nimbles go right back in with a little scolding, too.  I forget what moves between the deck and its SB.  I don't even cut his deck this time.  He topdecks the god-hand: Library, Ancestral, Force, MisD - it's bad.  Paul (looking over LAm's shoulder) groans and advises that I concede right away.  Ow.  He tried to Fire my Werebear when I am up to 6 cards in my graveyard.  I respond and activate my Factory and target it with Plow.  He MisD's my Plow to my Were bear.  He Wastes and Strips my dirt.  I die a slow inexorable mana-screwed death.  Miner wreaks havoc during one of the games.

Match 1-0-2
Tourney: 3-0-2

Third/Fourth Battle: Arend (aka SpecialK) piloting a clone of Lam's previous tourney-winning Mono-U BBS deck

I win game 1 with consistent, fast threats.  Null Rod stops the Keg.  Whew.

He wins game 2 with Back to Basics, Factory-defense and Smurfling.

He's mana-screwed.  Aw, muffin.  I win game 3 with Choke.  Fair.

Match 2-0-1
Tourney: 4-0-2

NB.  All five of the top five decks featured four Mishra's Factories.  I don't know how many other decks featured four, but several did.  Yes, we have a weird metagame and Keeper doesn't consistenyl fare well.

Unlike most Aggro decks I've played, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Aggro part of this deck could get a second wind if it began to stall - Threshold is a nice bonus and is very synergistic with 'Geddon.

I take third place overall (of fifteen) with this largely untested, evolving Erhnam-'Geddon deck.  Quite an entertaining deck to pilot.

Shawn and Lam duke it out in the finals in a mirror match.  Lam walks out with a Time Walk for first prize.  His fourth first in a row.

---------------------------------------------------------

FYI, what follows is my latest decklist which is doing quite nicely in further testing against Enchantress.

I dropped Defense Grids for more City of Solitudes.  Factories became Wastes which are better, even just in giving my threats surprise-threshold sometimes.  I also failed to use Factories for beats – moreoften they were colourless dirt.  Creeping Mold main instead of Aura Shards which are now in SB.  Null Rods dropped for Kegs which are plainly more versatile.  Extra dirt dropped mana-toys (ie.Sol Ring, Lotus, Moxen).

Genesis got tossed in for two reasons:
1) To help me deal with opposing critters by allowing me to chump with something (eg.Birds) for 4 mana per turn.  Stacker decks won't like this much I hope.
2) To help me overwhelm Permission decks with threats.

I'd still like to fit in a ZOrb main, two Aura Fracture SB, three Null Rods SB, and a Moat SB.

So far, I've avoided Tithes, Land Tax and Land Grant in lieu of more business spells.  I respect that each of these promotes Threshold.  But, I am in no hurry to reach Threshold since (unlike Grow) I am interested in more than just accelerated beatdown.

I welcome friendly comments and your suggestions.

Just a quick note on nomenclature...

I wonder if a Geddon-based deck is aggro-control, because it doesn't exactly have cheap disruption.

It'll determine the way you play the deck.

Just as a note... the two games I dropped to Lam were very close. Does he topdeck well or was he prepared for my fish with fifteen cards it hates? I also played side games against Keeper and have beaten Enchantress every time we played. I did not get easy matches - Keeper, Legend Sui, Enforcer and Lam U/r.
I love your deck. Third is great. You would have beaten Lam if you sided correctly game two. Oh well. I will organize another tournament and give you a second shot.
Lam has to be stopped... four in a row??? I'll have to play Lam hate next tournament in the form of Sligh with ReBs main or a nasty Sui.  I hate not playing Fish

Rakso, I've never heard that Control spells should cost less than four.

I know that 'Geddon isn't free or anything but it sure does affect the table when it resolves, usually netting me card advantage in the process.

You are quite right Rakso, the entire deck revolves around 'Geddon.  Hence, all the mana-buddies, mana-toys, threshold-friends, etc.

I have a lot of "high" casting cost spells in comparison to Aggro decks like: Stompy, Sui, Zoo or Sligh who are trying to get under the two-blue-mana-tempo-changing-mana-drain-problem.  My biggest worry is not Drain>Morphie it is rather Drain>Stroke.

I am less concerned than a pure Aggro deck about Drain-mana-cum-Morphling.  This deck does 6 things Morphie hates which many, more popular decks, don't focus on doing:

1) Potentially wrecks all of its blue mana (ie.less untargettableness)
2) Potentially wrecks all of its mana (ie.less pumping)
3) Makes many critters Morphie can only block and cannot kill
4) Can recur cheap chump blockers or threats via Genesis
5) Gets a second wind to help prevent stalling (ie.threshold)
6) Can cast City of Solitude making Morphie a vanilla 3/3 every other turn ie.Plowable

I think 'Geddon is worth the risk of its high casting cost - it is just so powerful.  As I have heard some say about Morphie, it is a one-card combo (read: wrecking ball).

And, given that white control is so out of vogue, people aren't building decks which are well-prepared to handle 'Geddon anymore.  It laughs at Teferi's Response, for example.

BeBe, I thank you again for giving me my seat in the top 4.  Lunch is on me.

I notice you have quite a few enchantments in the sideboard. If there's a matchup where you'd want your enchantments AND a fifth (or sixth) Geddon, Cataclysm could work.

Razor, I like the deck lots.

My questions are:

In the main deck, Powder Kegs?  Seems like this deck wouldn't want to Keg for more than 0 very often.  Admittedly, that isn't all bad, but their versatility seems questionable when you are playing 8 1cc creatures.  I'm not sold Kegs are better than Null Rod.  Its probably a metagame call though.

4 SB Ivory Masks?  I'd like to see at most 2 and 2 CoP:Red or other Red hoser.

The 2 SB Crypts are very smart.  2 Crypts are mandantory for any non NG or apprentice metagame these days.

Well, since you have cheap control cards plus Geddon, is it aggro-control or control? I was just thinking it tended to the latter, despite the early beats.

Cool, it seems that there are lots of T1 players in Toronto.  I wish I could come down to Hairy T's or 401 more often to play (I live in Markham).  I work six days out of the week so I play when I can.

Rakso, thanks for your comments.

Rakso, as you know, eight of my beatdown critters are fatter than those used in 90% of competitive Type 1 decks.  The exceptions that come to mind are: Reanimator, Oath, and Gro (if Dryad gets fat).

This deck also features more beatdown critters (20 including man-lands) than any Control deck I can think of, offhand.  Usually control decks feature fewer than twelve critters don't they?  eg.even Void decks fit this criteria.

Usually, when I think of Control I think of: Parfait, mono-U and Keeper.  Counterspells stand out foremost when I think of Control decks, in general.  I don't think of Enforcer decks with Hunted Wumpus, do you?  (If so, cool!)

I usually see Null Rods in Aggro decks and Kegs in Control decks.  Don't forget that just a few days ago this deck was using maindeck Null Rods in lieu of Kegs and it was just peachy.  Since I thought my deck was a little more aggressive than it needed to be, I decided to try some Control toys.  Hence, I exchanged the Rods for Kegs to balance the deck's ratio of Control:Aggro.  I am not sure if the Kegs are better than Rods, yet.

I generally have been Kegging for zero which does most of the same job that Null Rods do for me ie.crippling mana-toys to make 'Geddon hurt.  It is just nice to be able to Keg for 1 versus Sligh, or Stompy, or Stacker which might otherwise own me if I were using Null Rods instead.  Losing a few 1 cc dudes of my own is ok with me if I need to to live; hey, it helps me get Threshold, too.

You are right in that it is totally a metagame call.  Given the diverse metagame of the TOC6 I thank the Gods I chose versatile Kegs over limited Rods.

Let me ask you a rhetorical question in return.  Would adding 2 CoP: Red SB (in lieu of 2 I.Masks) have saved me from Academy, Dragon and Sligh equally as well?  Ivory Mask is just more versatile.  Usually it is not allowed to resolve fast enough versus Sligh, so CoP: Red is must.  But, I'm hoping that if they are shooting my mana-buddies to prevent me from getting 4 fast mana that I'll live long enough to get 4 slow (ie.dirt) mana to cast I.Mask to live.  Also, I have little to fear from Sligh's Cursed Scrolls or Black Vise due to my Kegs and I.Masks and Aggro-small-hand-size.

Thanks!  One of my playtesting buddies wields a strong Reanimator deck.  I have learned to Twist or Crypt by turn 5 or else die soonafter.

Yup.  I considered it.  I may yet go for it.  It would further help me to defeat Aggro decks.  However, I am not sure how this deck tests against Aggro decks yet (with the exception of Sui which is almost a bye).

ToC6 - Match 1

To my dismay I am paired with one of only two people in the ToC6 whom I know in real life and the only player I invited into the tourney!

I consider drawing with Rich.  But, nah, not my style.

We're both tired.  And, worse yet, we're both firewalled.

So I switch to dialup and we're into game 1.

Rich is playing a self-described "janky", rogue land destruction deck as follows:

11. richardmattiuzzo@rogers.com
//NAME: Rogue Land Destruction
       1 Black Lotus
       1 Mox Sapphire
       1 Mox Emerald
       1 Mox Ruby

       1 Sol Ring
       1 Ancestral Recall

       1 Vampiric Tutor
       1 Fork
       1 Regrowth
       1 Balance
       1 Crop Rotation
       1 Yawgmoth's Will
       1 Wheel of Fortune
       1 Diabolic Edict
       2 Fire/Ice
       2 Dwarven Miner
       2 Masticore
       2 Gorilla Shaman
       4 Cartographer
       4 Solfatara

       1 Strip Mine
       4 Wasteland
       2 Undiscovered Paradise

SB:  1 Tormod's Crypt
SB:  1 Black Vise
SB:  4 Hull Breach
SB:  1 Diabolic Edict
SB:  1 Earthquake
SB:  2 Gorilla Shaman
SB:  4 Red Elemental Blast

Cartographer:
  Info: Color=Green     Type=Creature - Townsfolk  Cost=2G         EX(U)/OD©
Text(EX/OD): 2/2. ; When ~this~ comes into play, you may return target land
card from your graveyard to your hand.

Solfatara:
  Info: Color=Red       Type=Instant               Cost=2R               VI©
Text(VI+errata): Target player can't plays lands this turn. ; Draw a card at
the beginning of the next turn's upkeep.

Pardic Miner:
  Info: Color=Red       Type=Creature - Dwarf      Cost=1R               OD®
  Text(OD): 1/1. ; Sacrifice ~this~: Target player can't play lands this turn.
The ability won't stop lands from being put into play by a spell or ability.

My deck is also a janky, rogue land destruction deck.  Gods, just what are the odds!

Game 1: It is long and grueling.  We both trash each other's mana sources pretty well until I get board control around my twenty-fifth turn.  He abuses his Cartographers to recover from my Land Destruction along the way.  Funny.  Miners, Avalanche Riders and PArdic Dwarves versus my Wumpus, Werebears and Enforcers.  Nimble and Wumpus go the distance as he topdecks chump-blocker after chump-blocker.  Whew.

Game 2: He gets a Turn 1 Sol Ring.  I drop a Savannah and Nimble.  He Strips my Savannah and "regrows" it for free with Cartographer turn 2!  He Wastes and Strips me into Submission and follows it all up with an Earthquake to kill my lonely Nimble.  I discard a lot and have no permanents most of the game.  His forst Cartographer goes farming.  But, his second Cartographer goes the distance for him in this insidious game.

Game 3: I get a turn 1 Birds or Paradise, yay!  Nimble hits turn 2 and I drop a Wasteland.  He has a Gemstone and Wasteland out.  Turn 3 I drop a second Wasteland and cast Wumpus!  He responds and puts an Avalance Rider into play choosing to hit my dual.  Next turn I Waste all his lands except his Gemstone - which eventually gets sac'ed all on its own.  My turn 3 6/6 Wumpus goes the distance with a Nimble winning around my seventh turn.

Match: 2-1
Tourney: 1-0

Kudos to Rich for building a rogue LD deck!

Oh my.  I realize that offering the following bit of advice might be comparable to rearranging lawn chairs on the sinking Titanic, but seeing as this person is already using Solfatara, is this person aware of the existance of Turf Wound?

Sorry to be reviving the thread, but... isn't impending disaster a much better card than armageddon because getting a total land count of 7 in play isn't that hard?

Quote Impending Disaster:
  Info: Color=Red       Type=Enchantment           Cost=1R               UL®
Text(UL,errata): At the beginning of your upkeep+if there are seven or more
lands in play, sacrifice ~this~.  If you do, destroy all lands.
This ability does not trigger at all if there are not seven lands in play at
the beginning of upkeep.  It checks this number again when it is going to
resolve and does not do anything if the land count is below 7.
  The ability is not optional.
If this card is not in play at the times its ability resolves, then you
cannot sacrifice it and it will not destroy any lands.  This is because
the sacrifice is a cost paid during resolution to get the effect.
Bastian, there is no way that Impending Disaster (I.D.) is half as good as Armageddon in here (or in any deck for that matter).  I don't see a need to add a third colour as this deck can handle anything reasonably well with Green and White.  Combo is tuff for sure, though.

Sure, 1R for I.D. is cheaper than 3W for 'Geddon, but I.D. can be fizzled with a Wasteland if your opponent is on the ball.

Also, I.D. is not as surprising as 'Geddon leading to much less disruption overall.

Further, many popular Aggro decks like Sligh and Stompy operate just fine with one or two land in play and can usually kill you by the time you have played the remaining five or six land required to trigger I.D.  Fireblast can even fizzle I.D.!

But, I really appreciate your suggestion.

Oh, has anyone ever experimented with Serenity in lieu of Null Rods, Deeds, Disks or Kegs in a Land Destruction control kind of way?

  Yes, it does destroy itself.

Quote Oh my.  I realize that offering the following bit of advice might be comparable to rearranging lawn chairs on the sinking Titanic, but seeing as this person is already using Solfatara, is this person aware of the existance of Turf Wound?

Unfortunately, no, up until you mentioned it I'd never seen a Turf Wound before. =(. I don't suppose it would make a huge difference, as this deck is far from optimized and even if it were it would still amount to nothing more than a janky-ass pile. Still, it's fun as hell to play. IMO, albeit that rogue decks are less likely to win versus the standard metagame (if there is such a thing), they're much more satisfying to play.

Ray, good games btw. Go rogue!

What do you think of using Heroes' Reunion over COP: Red in your sideboard?

Shock Wave, I wish you the best in the ToC6.  Us rogue Land Destruction decks have to support each other from here on....

SpecialK, I'm glad you respect the power of the Wumpus!

Nocturnal, thanks for bringing Heroes' Reunion up.

Right now, I've dropped the CoP: Reds in lieu of the more versatile Ivory Masks.  Combo is a tough matchup, too and Ivory Mask can stop Burn and Combo dead in their tracks.

I think I'd rather even sideboard: Embolden, Samite Ministration or Story Circle over Heroes' Reunion, though.  Mind you, personally I've never much valued lifegaining in general.  Any of them could easily make the Sideboard cut.  Depends on your mood, metagame and style.
