So I'm back in NY for the next 2 weeks and went to NG today for their weekly t1. there were actually something like 15 people signed up, which is way more than usual. i played--who'da thunk it??--Enchantress. Here's the list and board:
Enchantress Enchantress, August 2002, CooberP
Mana (28) 4 City of Brass 4 Savannah 3 Bayou 2 Brushland 2 Scrubland 3 Wasteland (in sanctioned tourneys if you don't have a Lotus it sucks for you doesn't it) 1 Strip Mine 1 Serra's Sanctum 1 Library of Alexandria 1 Undiscovered Paradise 1 Sol Ring 1 Mox Pearl 1 Mox Jet 1 Mox Emerald 1 Mox Sapphire 1 Carpet of Flowers
Draw (9) 4 Argothian Enchantress 3 Sylvan Library 1 Pursuit of Knowledge 1 Ancestral Recall
Recursion (5) 4 Replenish 1 Regrowth
Anti-Control (5) 3 Duress 1 Mind Twist 1 City of Solitude

Removal (4) 1 Balance 1 The Abyss 1 Pariah 1 Seal of Cleansing
Staying Alive (3) 1 Moat 1 Worship 1 Overgrown Estate

Sideboard (15) 2 Swords to Plowshares 2 Powder Keg 2 Aura Fracture 2 Choke 2 Circle of Protection: Red 1 City of Solitude 1 Femeref Enchantress 1 Compost 1 Circle of Protection: Black 1 Karmic Justice
Despite there being a ton of players, only two of the usual Keeper crowd were there: Eric Wilkinson and Raymond Lambert. I played against neither.
Round 1 against believe it or not...Distorting Lens/16 blast.dec This was a U/R land destruction deck with probably four Distorting Lenses, SIXTEEN blasts (4 hydro, pyro, reb, beb), and Blind Seer for the kill. It also ran Dwarven Miners. It was ridiculous. I lost game one. He played turn one Dwarven Miner with a Mox. The Miner ate a land. I was able to play Sylvan off a Mox, and finally was able to cast The Abyss with artifact mana, but not before the Miner munched six lands. He Memory Jarred, got a pair of Distorting Lenses, and blew up my entire board with blasts. It was positively ridiculous. I had Sylvanned really low, and a Grim Lavamancer killed me. Sideboarding brought the singlehanded game winner in Karmic Justice as well as two Chokes. Game two I resolved a quick Choke, followed it with KJ, Wasted his Shivan Reefs, and won with about 20 pegasi and half my deck on the board. Game three I got control pretty quickly by Sealing and Replenishing the Lenses, drawing cards, and dropping KJ, but I had five minutes left in the round and was racing to find Sanctum to power my Mesa to kill him quickly enough. I think I would probably have been able to do it but he was a good sport and conceded.
Round 2 (1-0, 2-1) vs. Survival This guy (Jason Deitsch) and I have played many times. We have had tons of fascinating Survival-Enchantress matchups. We split pretty evenly, but he's consistently taken two out of three when it counts in sanctioned play. This was no exception. Game one he goes first turn Survival. I Seal it. He recurs it and starts to do shit. I kept a mana light hand and have had to pay a lot of life to not miss land drops in order to cast the Replenish that would keep me alive. He Krovikan Horrors me to death but was Survivalling for the win anyway. Game two I start with turn one Sylvan. He goes Lotus-Rector. Turn two I play Fracture, leaving two land on top from Sylvan. He plays Phyrexian Tower and sacs the Rector to fetch Aura Fracture, and munches my board. I munch his Fracture. I play a land and say go, he plays Birds of Paradise but not another land. I have to think about whether he's really mana screwed and I should go for mana denial by Plowing the Bird and using up a precious mana source in Wasteland (I had no Sylvan) to off his land, but I just can't think of any other reason why he would hold back land. I kill his two mana. He doesn't draw any more. I play a land and tap out for Mesa. He does nothing, clearly without mana. I draw Replenish. I let the Mesa die and Replenish. With no hand, no board, and me with mana, card advantage, and beats on the table, he concedes. Game three he keeps a mana flooded hand without many threats or a way to get Survival. I get Sylvan and Enchantress and am drawing pretty consistently, with Seal and Grove and Fracture on board and taking control. I've paid some life to go to 8, thinking he's just doing nothing and I'm only under pressure from a pair of Quirion Elves, and I can tutor for Moat. I'm in good shape. But he taps six and plays--gulp--KAMAHL PIT FIGHTER. WTF? Using two Elves to untap Kamahl, he deals me nine. GG. WTF.
Round three vs. Mad Ghetto 13 year old R/G land destruction (1-1, 3-3) Game one he plays basic lands for two turns, I play Sylvan and Enchantres. He Stone Rains me about five times, but I draw boatloads of cards and get Worship and Moat and Sylvan/PoK and Replenish and everything my deck does when it's playing something that's not very challenging. I win. Game two he parises to 5, puts on very little pressure, I draw cards and drop enchantments, he concedes.
Round four vs. R/G Fat (2-1, 5-3) He was 2-1, running a deck that didn't have much disruption but included Phantom Centaur, Blastoderm, four Hull Breaches, Birds, Concordant Crossroads, Kird Apes, Orcish Lumberjacks, Saproling Bursts, and stuff like that. Game one he plays an Ape. I'm holding Balance so I Duress him, snagging Saproling Burst. He swings for 2. I play Sylvan. He swings for 2 and casts Lumberjack. I Balance, chucking a land. He plays the Phantom Dude and a Derm and gets me to 5. I draw Regrow and Balance, chucking a hand LOADED with goodies like Worship and Pursuit. He plays a Kird Ape. I just need to Sylvan up a Replenish and I've got it. I have nothing but land on top . He plays Concordant Crossroads and gets me to 3. I'm digging with Sylvan, finding an Enchantress that can chump but no Replenish! He draws...land. He attacks; I'm at 1 with no Replenish in sight. I dig up--Abyss! Phew. He has Pro Black guys, but it kills the Ape that would've killed me next turn AND knocks off the Crossroads, which would have let him swing with any dude he drew and win. He draws--land. I Sylvan up a Pariah for whatever he is going to play. He draws Hull Breach, offing the Abyss. I've got a Pariah, but he runs untargetables...Finally, I find the Replenish. Worship comes out along with Sylvan/PoK and 2 Groves and that's game folks. I board in the standard anticreature stuff. Game two, I get a hand with DT, Moat, Emerald, Scrubland, Pariah, and a Waste and Strip. I didn't see a Wasteland game one so I gamble. First turn DT would get Ancestral, but I have no blue source. I get Abyss, because why not. He casts Derm with some form of mana acceleration. I have nothing to do with 3 mana so I Regrow DT. He casts another Derm. I then realize I have no second white source for Moat. I need to topdeck a white source. I topdeck Mox Pearl and cast the Moat. Yay. He has the Hull Breach, offing Moat and the Emerald, and swings for 5. I've got to topdeck again and I don't have a Sylvan. I topdeck the Replenish and cast it. He doesn't have another Breach. I have a City so I could get Ancestral, but at this point, since he has no burn or fliers save Birds and no pump, I DT for Grove and cast it. He scoops.
Final: 3-1, 7-3
Survival won the tourney. I should have. Kamahl Pit Fighter can suck it. More on Sunday.
