I'm pretty sure it's sanctioned, probably with a 16 or higher K value. It's going to be a TON of fun, with a lot of faces to go along with the names you know. Come support the greatest format of all and bring some life back to a format some call dying!

I'll be there with a digital camera for a tournament report and match coverage, and a pen to sign autographs.    Lol. Well heck, if anyone wants one sure thing-- I might pick up a few myself.

Come on down, or up, or whatever, depending on where you might be!

This should be quite the event and it would be a shame for anyone who can make it here to miss it.  Expect tournament reports galore to pop up after the event...

Don't forget that VA States is in the same building.  If they want to play Nov Type 2, they can do that and you get a free ride to play type 1.

Its going to be a busy day with Va States, the t1, the JSS, and drafting going on all day.  Pete @ *City runs a quality event so expect a good time.

To all who are planning on attending, please shower, no one likes a smelly gamer after a day of playing.

I thought I'd quote that just so people get to read it again.  I still have nightmares about the Odyssey Prerelease.

I am SO looking forward to tomorrow's event!  I plan to play the heck out of my deck in the Type 1, and to get in some good trading too!

For folks wanting to get a handle on the metagame, good luck!  Expect to see Sui, Sligh, Keeper, TnT, Parfait, Mask, Mono-U, and other assorted oddities.  Just ask Azhrei about his strategy for selecting a sideboard at the Richmond Comix tourneys!

I can't wait to read some tourney reports...I wish I could have been there but Europe and the States are notoriously far apart...

everyone (well, OK, several people) who attended: please post a report so us old worlders can get in on some of the action!

Well folks, I don't want to spoil your pleasure at reading the tourney reports, but here's a quick peak at the Top 8:

Keeper
Keeper
Keeper
Keeper
Mask
TnT
Sui
B/G Junk (don't really know what to call this one)

There were maybe 30 people (I'm not sure of the exact number) with 5 rounds of swiss before cutting to Top 8.

It's usually called B/G Sui.  and I got beat by that old fart,  We went 1-0.  I was playing parfait and he was the only game I didn't finish.  Slow ass player, getting water and reading all my cards.  I guess you older people don't know how magic works.

If you have a duress in your hand, you play it.
If you have a creature you attack with it.
If you have a deed and you are not winning you use it.

I went 3-2.  Lost to the second place Dreadnought deck and this guy.

Dreadnought just smoked me, this guy just played ass slow.  You would think he was the one playing parfait.

Finals were TNT and Mask, funny all the keeper players lost.

If Keeper is the best deck ever, I guess these guys weren't he best players ever.

He did play kinda slow, but since I was the one with Mask, finishing games was not a problem.

Don't feel bad, I smoked the other Parfait player even worse.

I do feel lucky to have only had one match against Keeper all day.  Although I won in 3 games, I think the matchup leans somewhat in favor of Keeper.

And to their credit, Keeper did make up half the Top 8.  I think Keeper is finally heading in the right direction, having been forced to strengthen its matchups against aggro.  No chance of the deck going the way of the Dodo anytime soon.

The funniest thing was the G/B guy was the only guy to suffle my deck all day long.  I was watching him and had to foget there was over $600 bucks of cards in it, I thought we were playing with his $1.25 poker deck.

This is where it gets funny.

He cuts me to:

Lotus, Crypt, Zorb, Plains, Wasteland, Balance, Ivory Tower

I felt like I really did stack my deck?

My friend comes over like 3 turns later and ask,

"why doesn't he have any permanents?"

I was like, "causse in type 1 even white can be broken."

I know you are asking why I lost, 1 word = Deed.

I absolutly hate this card vs white. Makes me want to add back the abeynces.

When are they going to make some sort of null rod for enchantments? don't you think it is due?  But that would kinda suck with my pony express...hehe...

One last note, at least I can beat TNT!!! Go TNT!!! Work them all and let me beat your ass, mmmm humility and disenchant, mmmmm

Radjammin:

I play TnT and have a general disdain for Control, but I can admit the Keeper is the BEST deck for a diverse metagame.  You should know this since you regularly have your butt handed to you monthly by Keeper in the hands of Azhrei and SliverKing.

I'm currently at work on a tourny report now but here is a quick synopsis of how the day went for me.

I played TnT w/ a few tweeks (decklist will be in the report)...
Round 1:  Marc Perez with GayFish
This is a good matchup for me since Null Rod doesn't stop Juggs and Su Chi's from swinging.  Per Mark's request "I steamrolled him" 1-0, 2-0
Round 2:  Cas w/ Burn
Tight matchup that came down to him not drawing a PoP in game 3.  In game 2 I got first turn Goblin Sharpshooter to take card of his creatures   2-0, 4-1
Round 3:  Vinny Pau w/ Keeper
I win the first game somewhat quickly (maybe 10-15 min), he mises card after card in game 2 to win (aura fracture after I drop turn 1 SoF, edicts for welder 1, Fire/Ice for welder 2 and shaman etc).  We don't have time to finish game 3 though he would have won w/ Mishra beats given another 2 turns.  One interesting note in game 3 is my drawing of 15 mana sources in 19 cards.  2-0-1, 5-2-1
Round 4:  Matt D'avanzo (pardon misspellings)
See round 4 except that Matt had solid draws throughout game 2 to own me (no mising for him) and didn't draw into a threat in game 3 before time was called.  2-0-2, 6-3-2
Round 5:  SliverKing with Keeper
Yes 3 keeper matchups in a row.  This time I don't draw the goods in either game and Cunning Wish for Ebony Charm owns me each game taking out Squee, Anger, X each time.  2-1-2, 6-5-2

I miss out on t8 due to the draws and sheer exhaustion of 3 keeper matchups in a row.  If I had won round 5 then I get in t8 as the 2 seed (would have 10 points and good tie breaks) but instead I am on the outside looking in.  :Sigh:  But those are the breaks and I am only 2.5 months into playing TnT while each of the Keeper players have spent years playing their deck.

A great event though, I have to commend Pete at *City for putting on a great event.

Radjammin, I really don't think you're in a position to speak poorly of anyone's play ability. I'll let that speak for itself. I am far from a flawless player, but I'm certainly a decent amount over 1600 considering we all started at the same level.

Hehe.

Actually I have been dialogue-ing with the guy who played the B/g deck, based off my PT Funk deck from the ToC...I am really just elated to see a deck design I've championed for awhile now perform well. Too bad TNT is almost an auto-loss.

See the cool thing about real life is that I can let the numbers speak for themselves.

Top 8 had 4 keeper decks in it, and oh look none of them were in the final game.

So stop your personal attacks, as I was not in the top 8 and never claimed to be.  I was just stating what happened.

Or was I in another state, watching another type 1 torney?

Only 30 people showed up ? What a deceptive turnout.

We had 60 players on saturday at CTM (Quebec), and we were 73 sunday at Carta Magica (Montreal).

Nevertheless, I'm eagerly waiting for the reports as well.

Thank you for taking quotations out of context and for donating your $12 each month.

Since you prefer to use quotations out of context here is one for you try on:  "I refuse to have a Battle of Wits with an unarmed opponent."

I'm going to take off my "Azhrei" hat and my "Darren" hat now and put on my "moderator" hat. Trolling for a flame war is totally unacceptable and is not going to be tolerated.

I find personal attacks on these forums to be in poor taste, particularly mocking someone about his age. Frankly, you can poke fun at me all you like because I will be the first to admit that I lost due to player error. That's all well and good, so have a heap of fun with it while it lasts. Feel free to beat me the next time we sit across from each other, by all means.

However, Matt D'Avanzo has been a good friend of mine for a few years now and Eric Wilkinson is a total class act as well, and I am FAR from even beginning to let anyone take a shot at either of them, particularly since they are not on the board to defend themselves, though their mutual 1800+ ratings can do a fair job of that alone. I offer no defense for myself and my own mistakes, but I'll not allow someone with a 1538 rating to take digs at players who compete regularly with the likes of Michael Pustilnik. When you can even begin to show a career like either of them, you may judge their performance-- until then, do everyone a favor and knock it off.

I am very sorry that you feel it necessary to attempt to demean other people to compensate for your own lack of successes. I have seen very little from you on this forum besides short negative blurbs, and no contribution to the game or the community. I hope that this pattern will change in the immediate future, or I will ask Zherbus to monitor you very closely.

I suggest that no one else reply to this discussion unless they have something intelligent to say that relates to Magic.

That is all, and that will be all.

Well, on behalf of the SouthEast Contingent, I would like to thank everyone at the VA tourney. I would agree that the 4 keepers performed ferociously well, unless you somehow missed the Swiss rounds.
I found it especially telling that the aggro decks had the answers. Not the typical, anti-keeper hatred, but the broad, uncontrollable chaos of broken cards. I think the designers erred on Welder, and MEANT to say "non-creature artifact" like Mox monkey. I think Mishra's Workshop is quickly headed back to the restricted list. The "morph" ability of Dreadnought at no cost is just a mistake. A ridiculous mistake. However, capitalizing on the screwed cards is what T1 is, right?

Anyway, look forward to the tourney reports as well, s'long as no one notices how terribly I did.

Apparently, some folks think that an increase in the number of decks at Tier 1 is a bad thing, and cry "broken" or "ridiculous mistake".

Its not like TnT or Mask are Tier 0 decks, which beat everything else.  Either one of these decks is probably somewhere around 50/50 with Keeper.  Why does that merit the restriction of a card?

Lemme clarify. Many cards in T1 are broken. Clearly Mana Drain is. It doesn't mean it should be restricted, just that it will always be used, because of its merits. MW, unlike every other card of its nature, is no longer restricted. Why is beyond me. I expect it to return to the list some time in the future.

The workshops aren't any more broken then Mana Drain. Should they go too?

I am been instructed that I am not allowed to respond to the several personal attacks here directed towards me. I shall just leave with the type 8.

I have to say that, like anything else in magic that is uncounterable, and produces more mana than it costs to play, should be restricted. Mana Drain compares, slightly, but not when compared to other things on the restricted list. Would you suggest the same for Dark Ritual?

What do you base your expectation on?  Is it your contention that decks with Workshops are overly dominant and cannot be overcome by decks like Keeper?

I'm just curious as to your reasoning that it should be restricted.  You mention other cards "of its nature", but these are hard to find.  Workshop has a built-in counterbalance of only being able to cast artifacts, which are either non-creatures (how many non-creature unrestricted artifacts are broken in Type 1?) or creatures (creatures by nature are not broken).

I just have yet to hear a good reason to restrict this card.

Radjammin:  I'm not sure what your arguing.  We all know that Keeper placed 4 decks in the Top 8.  It didn't happen to win the finals.  What conclusions do you draw from this?

Personally, I think that we can say Keeper has no guarantee of beating TnT, or apparently, decks whose creature base is 4 maindeck Negators, Boas, and Hippys.  Also, there was a Keeper mirror, so one of them had to go there.  I don't think we can use this single Top 8 experience to draw any other conclusions.  Keeper has consistantly placed highly in large events; that trend is far more telling than this single tournament.

Yes, the Fallen Empires sac-lands are broken and should immediately be restricted.

Even better, those pesky basic lands are uncounterable and produce more than they cost to put into play.  Lets restrict all basic lands.

Clearly, these blanket rules are tough to apply.  You need to look at each card individually.  What about Workshop is hurting Type 1?
