As always, thanks a lot to the organizers (Mathieu and Serge) for a well run tournament and letting me have the results and decklists.
There were 42 players, for 6 rounds of swiss with a single elimination Top 8. The first prize was 150$, with the rest of the Top 8 getting store credit for singles (90$-50$-20$). Entry fee was 10$.

From the first chart, we can see that mono-color, while being the most popular choice overall, probably for financial reasons, is far from the best way to go. The loss of focus and less stable mana base additionnal colors bring you is worth far more, particularly for 2 and 3 colors decks, who had the best results overall. However, going all the way to 5 colors is not needed, as shown by the results. This is tied in part with the Power level argument, in that players without the means to have power cards often don’t have the means to own the needed dual lands in order to add more colors to their deck.
The color distribution itself shows that Blue and Red were dominant in the Top 8 as well as the Top 16. Green managed a surprise showing, with White being the less successful color. Maybe it’s time to reevaluate our opinion on the weakest color in Type 1. The overabundance of Blue, particularly in the upper part of the ranking, might warrant the inclusion of main deck hate for players wanting to get an edge, if they can be sure to win their more random matchups in the first 2 rounds. Again, Blue dominance can be linked to the Power cards, since Blue is the only color to have those Power cards. People with less money see less incencive to play Blue, often relying on the cheapness of Red and Black, and while Red had some success (mostly as a splash color for Blue decks and as the main color for TnT), Black as a primary color did as it do most of the time, that is fail to give good results.
As for the color combinations, we see that 5 colors deck were the most played, along with mono Black and mono Red, showing us the two extremes of the field, that is cheap decks (I mean cheap in term of card value, not card quality) versus costly ones. The most successful color combination was without a doubt U/R/G (TnT). It’s interesting to see how certain combinations, while popular in Extended (such as B/G), aren’t seen in this tournament.
Deck Archetype
Now, let’s take a look at the deck types. I regrouped some of the decks together for simplicity. Also, there are some deck types who may not be considered the same by their most ardent players, but I’m no expert in deck terminology, so forgive me for any error due to a lack of semantic knowledge. I regrouped the mono Red deck with Mishra’s Workshop with the standard TnT build. Control Blue includes mono Blue as well as Blue decks splashing for a second color (such as URphidian and U/B). Keeper includes 4 and 5 colors control decks. All mono Black deck are called Suicide Black, even if some of them are more slow than typical Suicide build. Combo includes 21, Reanimator and Aluren. It also includes Academy and would include Dragon decks if they had been presents. Stompy is only for the fast mono Green decks. Rogue decks are all grouped together, without consideration for their actual build. They include most of the non-standard decks, or deck whose focus was too hard to figure out. Grow decks are decks based on Quirion Dryad. Slight is used for Red decks using cheap creatures and burn (including the one splashing White). 3 Colors Control is for mostly Blue decks splashing 2 other colors. Machine Head is used to describe B/R decks. Land Destruction is pretty descriptive. Fires is for R/G beatdown decks. The two most successful archetypes were TnT and Control Blue. More than 2 colors Control decks managed nice showing, but nothing extraordinary. Suicide Black and Slight were very deceiving. This links with the precedent conclusions about Power cards, confirming that you should probably not listen to people saying you can win with Goblins and Hymn to Tourach only. Combo decks weren’t overly present, and that’s probably a good thing for them, considering the amount of Control present. It was still nice to see the Aluren deck (straight off Pro Tour – Houston, except for a few minor changes), even if it didn’t perform all that well (the deck wasn’t powered). Stompy managed a surprise showing in Top 16. Rogue deck also failed miserably. It’s far preferable to stick to common knowledge. After all, there’s a reason “net decks” perform so well: there are thousand (maybe just hundred in the case of Type 1 decks, but still) of people who played and tested the decks before you to conclude what was the best build. While everyone can dream to break the format, in such a stagnant environment as Type 1, you’re better off trying to figure out the metagame and hate it as much as you can than trying to come up with the new bomb. Most of the rogue decks were probably beginner’s decks, lacking not only in Power cards, but in simple card quality. Grow decks didn’t have much of an impact, as well as the remaining marginal archetypes.
Player quality
This is an element I’ve rarely seen analysed, so I’m not sure if I’m doing it right or if it has even any kind of relevance, but let’s take a look at it. The way to evaluate players in sanctioned Magic is through rating. I took in note everyone’s rating (as of 2002/12/03). This rating doesn’t include the results from this tournament, so it will allow us to see if players performed as could have been predicted based on their rating.
First, here’s a list of players, with their ratings. It’s sorted them by Vintage rating order, and it also shows Constructed rating (Extended and Type 2) as well as Composite (Constructed and Limited). 0 means that there was no rating available (first tournament), while ? means that I couldn’t find the ratings for that player (bad DCI number or such).

Standings followed predictable logic, with the best players almost all managing at least a Top 16. No players managed Top 16 at their first tournament. Over 60% of the Top 8 had a rating over 1700 (a very good rating considering the low number of Vintage tournaments). These data also go along with the Power level argument, that is better players have better cards which bring them more success (all of that stuff is somehow linked).
While this data is pretty predictable, what is maybe more interesting is to see the relationship (or rather lack of) between Vintage rating and Composite rating.

First interesting thing: over half the players don’t even have a Composite rating! This confirms that Type 1 players are a special kind, for the most part not being interested in the more common formats pushed forward by Wizards of the Coast. This explains in part the “elitist” attitude of many veteran Type 1 players. About ¾ of those players weren’t playing in their first tournament. Maybe if Type 1 players were more open to other formats, it would reduce this elitist feeling (or the poor opinion most of them have of Type 2 players). Also, another interesting data is that only 1 player has a Composite Rating of over 1700 (and he didn’t have a good showing either). This means that the best players don’t play Type 1. For the most part, they just don’t have enough time to put into testing for a “dead” format, and keeping up a 1800 rating is hard enough without additional distraction. In the “middle range” categories (1550-1700), we see the expected distribution, with better players faring better than lower ones. Overall, the best thing we can see from those two charts is that success in Type 1 can be achieved even if you’re not as good in the more common formats, and that it’s not any Type 2 player who can show up at a Type 1 tournament and win it all.
Matchup analysis
I’m gonna use the precendent classification to analyse the matchups. This will include all the match for the 6 rounds as well as the Top 8. I only have the final result (that is, the result of the match, not that of each game), so this won’t help us much about sideboarding impact, but it should still be interesting. Also, I have no way to differenciate a draw from an intentional draw, so it might skew the results slightly. I’ll also look at match results based on Power cards and on player Ratings.
First, here are the raw data. Matchups are listed showing Deck Type/Power/Rating. Deck Type is based on the precedent categories. Power is indicated by Y for yes and N for no. Rating indicates the category of rating (1600 means between 1600 and 1650, 1650 means between 1650 and 1700, etc…). Result is W for win, L for loss and D for draw. The result is for the deck listed in the first column. Every matchup shows up twice, once for each deck.
