Author Topic: Charleston t1, Void makes the finals.  (Read 3526 times)

I've been playing Type One for about nine months now, having been a type 2 player. t.1 is just funner.   anyway I played a version of Nether Void in a tourney on Saturday, December 7.  Prizes:
1st Ul Time Walk
2nd Italian The Abyss
3rd 2 masticore
4th $10 store credit.

Here is the decklist, and explanations on the more controversial card choices.

Void
4 Hypnotic Spectre
4 Nantuko Shade
4 Duress
4 Sinkhole
4 Hymn to Tourach
3 Nether Void
3 Powder Keg
2 Chainer's Edict
1 Mind Twist
1 Demonic Tutor
4 Dark Ritual
1 Sol Ring
1 Mox Jet
1 Black Lotus
1 Strip Mine
3 Wasteland
4 Mishra's Factory
15 Swamp

Sideboard
2 Chainer's Edict
2 Diabolic Edict
2 Zuran Orb
2 Masticore
1 Powder Keg
3 Null Rod
2 Coffin Purge
1 Haunting Echoes

I started with Zherbus' Void about 4 months ago, and have tweaked it to my metagame/preferences

Explanations:
No Demonic Consultation:  After playing the deck for a month I realized that I was either winning, or losing so badly that a single card couldn't save me.  So I dropped this for Mind Twist because that card is Good in this deck.

No Yawgmoth's Will:  I don't see enough control, which is where I see this helping the most.  The majority of my games do not last long enough for me to use this effectively.  If control makes a comeback here then I would probably play this again.

No Necropotence:  My heavy aggro metagame limits its uses much like Sylvan Library.  It is amazing vs the little control I do see.

No 4th wasteland:  Swamps are good.

Sideboard Edict overload:  This deck has a slight problem with TnT.  Fast beats are easily dealt with with Shades/Factories but Welder is a problem.

Zuran Orb:  Comes in vs aggro for obvious reasons.  invalidates Wastelands.

Masticore: The Abyss owns me.

Coffin Purge/Echoes:  Anti Oath.

The tourney Report.

Round 1

Wrisley, playing Aluren Combo with power/ duals.
I knew what he was playing because he was playtesting beforehand so....

Game 1:  I keep a hand with:
2x Swamp
3x Duress
1x Factory
1x Hymn

Seem good vs Combo?  he plays 1st, going tropical, mox, mox, Cloud of Faeries, go.  I duress him, he recalls, i see the Harpy/Savage but nothing to duress. next turn he plays Underground Sea, Aluren.   I concede.

Out
2 Chainer's Edict

In
1 Powder Keg
1 Haunting Echoes

Game 2:  I go first, swamp, rit, duress, hymn.  I get aluren, land, and I think a Savage?  it was one of the combo pieces.  he drops a land, go.  I sinkhole.  he draws 5 lands in a row, ending the game with just a Harpy in play.  Natuko Shade x 2 > Cavern Harpy x 1

Game 3:  See game 2, except he sees two lands, i see 2 strips.

Matches 1-0-0
Games    2-1-0

Round 2

Jon Spires the Charleston Dinosaur, Bbs.

Game 1:  factory owns him until Morphling hits. I lose.

Out
3 Powder Keg(no Phids)
1 Nether Void
1 Mind Twist
1 Sinkhole
1 Hymn To Tourach
The Void is bad vs lots of mana.
the other 3 are bad vs Misdirection

In
4 Edicts
3 Null Rod

Game 2:
I mulligan, keep a decent hand with Duress and Factory.  I have a suspicion that he isn't running Wastelands on top of the missing Ophidians.  Factory owns him, mid game Void seals the game.

Game 3: He plays Island, Keg go the whole game.  Shade/ Rod wins.

Matches 2-0-0
Games    4-2-0

Round 3: Dave Allen, Playing TnT.

Game 1:  Two Juggernaughts by turn 2 own me fast.

Out
3 Keg
1 Mind Twist
3 Nether Void
2 Hymn to Tourach

In
3 Null Rod
4 Edict
2 Masticore

Game 2:  I play a 1st turn Core, he lays a Su-Chi.  I forget To upkeep the Core.  I lose soon after.  Entirely my fault, I'm a Scrub.  At least Dave ended up  4-0-1 in the Swiss.

Matches 2-1-0
Games    4-4-0

Round 4 Billy Playing Suicide Black.

Game 1:  I lay a fast Void after Eating his land.  2x hyppie owns him.

No Siding.

Game 2:  He gets 1st turn rit, duress, hymn.  i lay Swamp, go.  He hymns me.  I draw a Void, go.  Negator drops and I cease to Exist.

Game 3:  I go swamp, lotus rit, mox, shade, void.  he lays swamp. I match and swing.  he misses 2 land drops.

Matches 3-1-0
Games   6-4-0

Round 5 Hill Redwine, VA t.1 Champ playing TnT.
ID.  Hill is 3-0-1 at this point, and 10 points makes it.

So I'm 3-1 with the two undefeateds as tiebreakers.

top 8 is like this in no order

Dave, TnT
Hill, TnT
Mike, Void
Jesse(Me), Void
Billy, Sui
Chub, Donate
Mike B, Rector Ghoul.
Gohan, Super Gro.

t8
I get Gohan

Game 1:  Factory/ Hippie owns him.  Nothing spectacular here.

Out
4 Sinkhole(Bad vs Gush/Daze
1 Mind Twist

In
4 Edict
1 Keg

Game 2:  he lays a search land, I play a 1st turn void.  He grabs an island, brainstorms, Void resolves.  2x factory own him.  He told me that he sided out the dazes.  oops.

t4
Mike B, Playing Rector Ghoul.

Mike is one of the best players here, t8ing with a deck he hasn't played since Urza's was t.2.  I feel bad for the following...

Game 1:  he goes 1st and lays a searchland, then Cabal Therapy, naming Hippie.  No hits.  I eat ALL of his land, drop void, and Factory him.

Game 2: He duresses me, seeing:  Void, Lotus, Swampx2, Factory, Duress, Hymn.  He takes the Hymn.  I lay 1st turn Void, draw Strips, Factory takes him to 4, then a Hippie joins in

the other t4 match is  Chub vs Dave.  I'm Rooting for Chub because his team has a fetish for this Donate deck, Ur style, And I went 3-0 matches vs it at the last tourney.  I know that Null Rod is Strong here.

Finals

Game 1:  He combos me 2nd turn.

Out
3 Keg

In
3 Rod

Game 2:  Void/Rod locks his mana, shade cleans up.

Game 3:  I make a large mistake and mull away a hand of
1 Factory
1 Sol Ring
1 Null Rod
1 Shade
1 Mox Jet
1 Duress
1 Lotus

because it can't generate Black mana after turn 1.
turn 1 he goes Lotus, Crypt, Mox Sapphire, Island, Morphling.
No counter backup.  He never draws another land but he doesn't have to...

So I Get my 3rd The Abyss

Also, Here is my revised Janky sideboard.

2 Chainer's Edict
2 Zuran Orb
1 haunting Echoes
3 Null Rod
4 Dauthi Horror
1 Wasteland
1 Dustbowl
1 Open

Good report Jesse. Your analysis of your game 3 loss to Chub is entirely correct. I frankly was amazed when you mulliganed that opening hand, since as the designer of Charleston Trix I know that that hand would have wrecked him, especially since his playing of that deck is atrocious, lol. Congrats on getting 2nd, you played well Saturday. Next month Hobotek will try to give you a little more of a challenge. Hopefully you'll run that janky Gorger deck again.......

Jon
I didn't witness it, but would have to say that most times, when, in your opening hand, you can A) play all your cards, and B) do three of the things your deck WANTS to do (put a beat down, yank a card, and control the environment), you should probably do that.
Good job, though, Jesse. Keep it up.

thanks for the replies.

I played game 3 like an ass.  That hand was god, but I just saw the lack of swamps and shipped it back.  playing the deck has taught me that Swamps are good.  I just got in the rut and didn't think it through.  Oh well...

@ Jon.  Yeah, Chub plays the deck to slow, taking 2-3 turns more than most of you.  Although he is the only one of you to beat me with it lol.  Also, My dragon is dead.  I'm never playing it again it sucks so much.  I'm pretty unhappy with combo, Academy, Dragon and Trix being the only pure combo decks that I Might play in a tourney.

@ Darren.  You would know what my deck likes to do, especially since I get to do it to you every time in Savannah

As an aside,  Since most of us are thinking of skipping the next Savannah trip, Why not hold another one at the dragon this month?  I'll put up the The Abyss that I won for 2nd, and you could put the timewalk up for first?  let me know k.

Great job winning with Void! I would go on and on with card choices, but I dont have a good enough feel for your meta and you seem to be kicking ass with it. Keep it up!

Zherbus, i'd like to thank you for having a kick ass decklist that i used for reference.  The factories are so much better than ports.  So far I've made top 8 every time I've played this deck, with a 2 t8's, a t4, a 1st, and a 2nd.  At the first tourney I played your version, minus a consult plus a twist, and found how little I used the necro and will.  As I metioned, if there were more control here then I would fit in those 2, but with my meta there is simply no need.

Your welcome, and Im glad you were able to make use of my primer for a point of reference. While I would never leave out Necro or Will, if its not broken, then certainly dont fix it. Wink

Tell you what Jesse. You keep that Abyss, and put up a Workshop for 2nd, and I'll try to get Chub to put up the Walk.
Plus, to increase attendance, why don't we make it a proxy tourney so that the have-nots can go toe-to-toe with the big boys one more time???

The Proxy thing sounds good, but I only have 4 Workshops.  I'd rather run my 2nd ancestral as 1st than lose a Shop.  Hell, I'll put up all the prizes if you can organize it.  The only thing is, my next weekend day off is sunday the 22nd, same day as the savannah tourney.  If thats all right I'll do it.

How does
1st: Ancestral
2nd: Itl The Abyss
3rd & 4th: Not Sure Yet.

I'll check with The Green Dragon to see if that day is available. Those prizes are acceptable, plus I don't think anyone was going to do Savannah this month, with it so close to Christmas. Will post an update this evening on this thread if it's a go.........

I'd love to have 2 type 1 tourneys a month, but we might want to make sure Jeff won't be upset since he holds a tourney and kinda expects us all to show up.
whatcha think..

Trash-talking Jesse?

Anyway, I think the 22nd is a bad idea. Do what you like, but Savannah has deliberately avoided the dates you guys set for yours, so as not to conflict with your tourneys. What, yer gonna have one the 22nd, AND the 4th of January?

The point of us having a tourney on the 22nd here is that most of us aren't going to savannah this month.  Jon said his anniversary is the day after, Dave might be out of town, those two not going keeps Gohan and Rudy from going, and I have to work at 4am the next day so I'm skipping also.  Shawn isn't going cause relatives are coming.  Thats most of our crew who go there anyway.  If we have one then we get a 2nd tourney this month instead of one.  Also, it has to be the 22nd b/c thats the only weekend day I have off and I'm going to put up the prizes.

We arent trying to block Savannah's date, but we won't be
going anyway.  I guess there will be one on the 4th also, but thats Hobo-tech/CancerLoversOfAmerica.team's thing.

And yeah I was talking the trash old man.  I don't mind losing the fun games as long as I take the ones that matter.  Wink

Dave, you ever find out if you are going out of town?  also, I'm going to get your beta hippies friday, k?

And why should Jeff EXPECT us to come?  He hasn't came to one of ours since I bought my first power in APRIL.  Hill and Faye are the only Savannah* players who REGULARLY make the trip, Darren being the only onther person to come regularly.

*I know they just moved to Atlanta, just shows that Hill is the coolest guy ever, making a 4-6 hr drive for a tourney.  I put Savannah b/c thats where the traveled from the most.

First, I realize that not everyone can make it from Charleston, as it is quite close to the holiday. Jeff does not "expect" anyone to come, but he, to this point has been planning his tourneys with forethought to your dates; why can't the same be done for him? You guys are now planning a tourney NINE days away, and on a Sunday.
It eliminates the possibility of anyone even coming this way, as there will be a T1 in Charleston the same day. I really feel that cramming two T1s into the same month is just crowding the schedule.
Like I said, do what you're going to do. I really thought the idea was to build the SE "triangle" of Charleston-Atlanta-Savannah, so we could regularly have one in each city, each month. Hill is working on an early January date for Atlanta, which I want to attend.
Whatever. Email me, or call me if you want to discuss it further.

I'm going to check my work schedule for the 28th.  If I have it off then we might have the tourney then.  If not, then it's me doing this tourney, not Jon or Dave.  I'm running it so all the people who definitely are not going can still play.  If anyone wants to go to Savannah then they can.  Some players might want to go, but they don't drive/have a car etc.(Rudy and Gohan jump out here)  Another thing,  The only player who looks like he wants to go is Dave, at least thats what I got from his posts.  I haven't talked to Gohan or Stally McStall-Stall so this is a supposition.  At most only two players who might have gone won't.

I understand your motivations, and I hope things work out for you.
My advice, from organizing probably fifty events, and assisting with another fifty, is this:
Don't leave yourself too narrow a window for people to learn about/plan for the event. If you'll recall just a few months ago, the Charleston players were misinformed about a tournament, and actually had a week extra to work out their schedules, and you are announcing an event in the same space.
Don't abuse your community/crowd your schedule. I love playing T1, but the reality is, too many events won't make stronger events, just more smaller ones. If there are two every month in Charleston, no one will EVER come to Savannah.

You guys are doing a great job in Charleston, building your teams. Just forecast a little further in advance.

Darren A. Dew

PS: Honestly, how many people do you think would drive here "if they want to" instead of playing right there in town?

I'm not going to hold one every month, just this one is planned.  This is just a one time deal as of now, to make up for the holiday interference.  Sorry if that wasn't clear.

And to the "drive there if you want to" thing, it looks like dave was the only person who was planning to go anyway.  losing 1 person for 1 tourney shouldn't be to big a deal.

Maybe we SHOULD go to Savannah on the 22nd. After all, Charleston players have won the last FIVE IN A ROW there. Surely one of us could use another $10 piece of power, lol....

Well, since it looks like we won't have an unprecedented 2nd tourney in Charleston this month, IF we can arrange a ride, SOME of us will make Savannah. Of course, that's the day before my anniversary, so if I go, I better win, or else my wife will kick my ass, lol........
