Bill I have a couple questions for ya...

1)  What is the record for most entrants?

2)  Will you PLEASE persuade that cheapo to offer some better prizes for 3rd place down?

3)  Do you know how good the Recall will be, or are you just basically assuming it'll be pretty decent?

The prizes have been fine recently. Terry did lose a lot of money on a few of the tournaments, and he made a lot on one or two as well. As for prizes beyond third, we've never done it, but I could bring it up. It would be taken from 2nd and 3rd and I don't know if it would be that popular.

No idea about the recall, I haven't seen it. I do know that its gonna let you draw 3 cards for 1 blue mana though.

Come on, you would be only 4 proxies short, just play a deck that doesnt need full power (which is pretty much every deck cept academy).

When you say that the prizes have been fine recently, I disagree.  Last tournament there were 40 people I believe.  This means the store owner took in 400 bucks.  I'd estimate it cost him 200 bucks for the mox (maybe a little more,) and 50-60 bucks for the box he gave out between third and fourth.  As you can tell from simple addition, he could have done a little better with the prizes.

I gotta defend Terry here, and say that prize support HAS gotten better since the first time I came down.

Alpha power for first, 20 packs for second, and 16 packs for third.  That's a lot better than the Unlimited Mox for 1st, 15 (or so) packs for second.  Now, if the same number of packs were going to be given out (although I think a little more wouldn't hurt), I think that 20, 10, and 6 would be a better distribution for top 4.

I was talking with him a bit, and TnT holds other tournaments that give out more prize support than entry fees.  That's great for them, but it kinda sucks that the T1 power tourneys pay for other prizes.

Anyway, I think Terry is entitled to make a little money on these sometimes, he did lose over 100 on one of them.

I think maybe then Terry should consider giving something else out for 2nd and 3rd, rather than booster packs.  After all, this is a type 1 tournament, so I'd rather see an abyss, moat, or mana drain, then type 2 boosters.

I would like to put in a kind word for the store owner. The advertised prize last time was originally a UL mox. It got changed to an alpha mox, but the alpha mox hadn't arrived in time for the tournament. He was willing to put his own personal Beta mox up(from what I hear, it was in really nice condition) to make up for it, but Jarad was nice enough to wait for the Alpha one. A lot of store owners wouldn't do that.

Can I just say that there is *nothing wrong* with making money running tournaments?  Again, we live in a free market, folks, and if the demand is there, you have no right to yell at people for supplying.  He's offering a fun day of playing and the chance to win BB power for $10.  If you like that deal, come; if not, don't.  But if you feel like complaining about him not giving all/more back in prizes, move to Cuba.

I agree with all of that, but you also need to take into consideration the amount of business the tourny brings in, and also take into consideration how much MORE business you would have if you had more/better prizes. The better the prizes and such, the more likely you are to tell people to come.
BTW, Dan, are you ever going to come to one of these?

I'm fine with it, as long as it's announced beforehand. I was just used to TOs that didn't, so I assumed things were the same here. They aren't, obviously, and that's okay, but I just didn't expect it.

Of course, if you're playing too, it could appear a little shady.

Oh, it's nice to see that cooberP chimed in.  Although if I do remember correctly, you were the TO of one of the most controversially run tournaments.  So no offense, but I think our tournament would be run better without your advice.

@Chuck:  I was just joking; didn't mean to offend you.  I live in Hadley but go to school out of town so I don't get to play much at the store.  Nick's post said something about bashing Chuck so I thought I'd chime in.  

@everyone:  I do realize it's entirely the store owners choice for how much he wants to put up for prizes and if I have a problem then I can just sit at home, but I was sort of assuming that everyone would agree with me that more prizes is better.  Apparently most everyone is cool with less prizes, so I guess I'm outvoted.  

Hopefully the store owner can find a way to moderate it and maybe decide to offer more prizes when the turnout is really good.  And I'm not trying to argue that he's a bad guy either, I was trying to put a bit of a comical slant on my first post but apparently that wasn't incredibly well done.  

On another note... anyone have any predictions for what decks are going to do the best in February?

there's no question terry is a cool guy.  he waited around until almost 10 last saturday so adam, chris and i could play casual crap.  the prizes are fine; there will always be pushing for more on both sides.  

i was wondering what people thought of the 5 proxy change since i missed last saturday's tourney.  will it be done again?

as far as upcoming decks, it depends.  on tmd gro evolutions have been a hot topic.  given that both nick and brian have mentioned testing it, i'd expect alot of that (since ray, myself, and a few others have run it in the past).  in that kind of atmosphere i don't think combo will do very well and i'd expect more aggro (probably sui, dirty deeds, tnt and of course my elf-ball).

p.s. to nick, i've been testing online with psycho-gro and have not been terribly impressed.  its explosive, but very disruptible and inconsistent.  its late game sucks too.  i've only run a few games, but i'd like to hear what you've found.

I just wanted to say...I will be there with bells on...It is always a good time.  Also...on the topic of Terry, I want you guys to consider something.  First, Terry could theoretically say at any time "No more Type One Tourneys...Hahaha...".  Now don't get me wrong...this is the polar opposite of what Terry is like, but the point is, he is providing a valuable but intangible aspect of your tourneys (THE ABILITY TO HAVE ONE) so as long as the prizes aren't ridiculous, lets let him do what he wants.  

Point #2, I think we all need to give a thanks and pat on the back to Nick(Bill the Duck)  he, as far as I know, never gets any profit or compensation for running the tournaments, but like Zherbus with his website here, does it out of love for Type 1

@ Ray: Nick works, or at least used to work for the store, so he did at one point get paid for running them, but thats when he didn't play. I'm not sure what he gets for running them now.

@ GI: Gro evolutions were doing good, but last time, I don't even recall seeing a single one, and there definitely wasn't one in the top eight. I will tell you that what I am coming with is completely original, and you'll love it.

@ Nick: Can you try and talk Terry into deck registration? It really isn't a tough thing to do, and I think it would help maintain the quality of the tournament. I have heard rumblings about shady things in the past, and, I think for the few minutes it would take to fill it out, the tournament would be vastly better run.

Replenished makes a pretty good point... are you concerned about space in there at all?  If this is anything like any other tournaments I've been to, the stinky factor can get a little high for my nostrils.  Is moving out into the food court a reality?  Wouldn't be a bad idea by my estimation.

@skelbo:  I think last big tourny we had there we had to play outside in the food coat.  And I can tell you, doesn't look bad.  Open space, no friggin Creed....

Plus, you got Subway on your left, China panda on your right, Arby's, Dairy Queen behind you, and Taco Bell.  What more could you ask for (ok, maybe an Unlim. An. Recall...)

I'm not saying TnT is a bad place to be in:  in fact it's awesome.  Cool people everywhere and music.  Fun place to be on a Saturday.

Well, I, for one, think playing in the food court is awful. I had to do it for the first two rounds in the last tourny, and it really isn't fun. You lose 100% of the atmosphere that exists in the store, and theres no one around to joke around with and such. Not to mention, the incredible conflict that would exist if you needed to call a judge. You'd have to get up, and leave everything there, which is a horrible idea. I know Terry said he had more tables, but not more chairs. Any chance of getting some more?

i had to play there last tourney i went to and ended up hardcasting a spirit of the night turn 2....being really excited, and then looking around to see absolutely no one to share my awesomeness
we really need a solution...any space in the back room?
and playing w/ no chair isn't that bad, its the table space that's needed

Yeah, actually, you're right.  Zherbus pretty much sumed it up with the killing dandruff part at the end.  Plus, it doesn't help that there ARE some punks around you who make snide comments about your cards and stupid remarks like "so you like pokemon?".  In fact, last time I played out in the food court, I knocked some punk FLAT out because he was throwing my cards around the mall in a tourny.  Now he's afraid. (Nick, yes, that was the time Mike got kicked out)

So, I hope we get some chairs.
