Just thought I would post my tournament report from Sunday, Jan. 19 at Morningstar games in Savannah Ga.

Met Shawn and Jesse at the Citadel Mall in Charleston at 8:00 am, went to McD's, caught up the rest of the Chucktown contingent and we're off.  On the ride down, Jesse makes some excellent deck suggestions and adds some of his coveted power.  I ran an urphidian deck, thinking it would be a good metagame call.

We arrive, there are 28 entrants, and the matchups begin on time!

Swiss round 1 vs. Mat Brooks
Game 1 I drain an early academy rector and turn it into a rainbow efreet?!  I deny him, get the phid and some beats and he scooped.

Game 2 I side in 2 rootwater thiefs because I still have no idea what he is running.  I deny a few spells, get the theif and hammer away.  He scoops because all he draws is land.
He played a u/b discard with megrims and underworld dreams.
Mat, if you read this, please try duress and hymn to tourach.

1-0-0, 2-0-0

round 2 Todd Judy with Tnt
Although I've seen Todd before, we have never played against each other.  I didnt know what to think of this matchup.

game 1:  He gets the welder and an early juggernaut and comes swinging.  I get my rainbow out, block and phase, I,m down to 2 life.  I fire the welder, let b2b hit and keep swinging. I may have wished for a shattering pulse and used it, but I dont remember.

game 2: I get an early shattering pulse, which I can buyback, drain a jug, tocast pulse and phid, drain again for the rainbow and apply the hits

2-0-0, 4-0-0

Round 3: Kevin Crafts, aka Gohan playing trix
I know Gohan from C-town and offer an ID.  He turns it down, a 'crappy' decision.

games 1 and 2: I never let him do anything, even blasting a an early turn 2 impulse.  All he saw was a full serving of rainbow efreet.

3-0-0, 6-0-0

Round 4 Evil Bill, aka white trash playing ankh sligh

Game 1:  Again I offer the draw, but he really likes this matchup.  Early kegs and fire/ice slow hom down long enough for the efreet to come out and cleanup.

After the game again offer the draw which he grudgingly takes.  We play some post sideboard matchups, 3 or 4, burt he doesn't get me.  His sideboard choices are logical and defensible, but I disagree with them.

Round 5 Darren Dew, aka Zelif playing keeper
We come to the amicable decision to draw.

3-0-2

Top 8

Round o' 8 vs Scott
Scott tries to get under your skin to disrupt your thought process, but I thought he was kind of pleasant.  His deck is red/green and mostly type 2.

Game 1:  He gets land and an early zuran orb but cant find enough aggro.  I drain into morphling, keep icing his wurm token and eventually run him out of land.

Game 2:  My first loss of the day.  Early nimble and blurred mongoose hurt me bad.

Game 3: I clear the board with keg, drop 2 phids, get a rainbow and he scoops.

Round o' 4  Shawn playing Taiga
I know his deck and he knows mine.  Game 1 I get an early keg and morphling.  Game 2 he gets early beats and 3 wastelands. He doesn't need late beats cause he smashed me.

Game 3 I get the early masticore. I misdirect his rancor for his boa to the core and a few swings later we shake hands.

Round o' 2 vs Josh with u/r fish
Both games I get early kegs and counter everything. first match the morphling takes it and the second was the rainbow efreet.

My deck (As best I recall)
4 x island
4 x island
4 x volanic island
4 x shivan reef
3 x wasteland
1 x strip mine

4 force of will
4 ophidian
1 misdisrection
1 rainbow efreet (the mvp-edict? I dont think so)
1 morphling
1 masticore
4 mana drain
4 mana leak

4 fire/ice
1 L o A
1 Sol ring
1 mox pearl
1 mox sapphire
1 merchant scroll
1 fact or fiction
1 ancestral recall
1 timewalk
2 impulse
1 cunning wish
3 powder kegs
2 back 2 basics (should be bloodmoons)

sb
4 pyroblasts
1 pyroclasm
1 shattering pulse
1 capsize
1 tormods crypt
1 powder keg
1 stroke o genius
1 misdirection
1 zuran orb
sorry, I dont recall the rest

Props
1.  My wife for being awesome and letting me play.
2.  Jesse for the cards, advice and Arby's hookup (Thanks for the team invite)
3.  Powder keg, fire/ice and rainbow efreet (a card I could talk a long time about)
4.  Darren aka Zelif, because I know he will he write a better report where someone might read it.
5.  Shawn, for being cool.  Glad I got to know you better.
6.  Jeff and Morningstar for hosting an excellent, well-run tournament.
7.  The Mexi-homey; enough said.
8.  The play field, which was polite, courteous and full of people showing good sportsmanship.  I really appreciate that.

Slops
1.  Gohan, for a 'crappy' overlook on his part vs Scott.  If he took my draw he would have made top 8.

2. Scott, for allowing his frustration to interfere with his game.  He gets props for performing well with a nearly type 2, rogue deck.

3.  The blo-me homey.  For not being there when Jesse needed you most.

Congrats John, you deserved it. I knew your choice to use the Efreet was smart. Plus, after TeamHobotech waxed out early for a change, I'm glad you picked up the torch and brought back another win for Charleston, eight in a row and counting, lol.........

Much much props.  I thought I should have eaten your ass for lunch.  You seemed to think so too, luckily for me I took the ID cuz I think the reality would have been my ass!  We had both swept through undefeated and then ID'd in.  I never would have thought blue/red control could be so scary to play against.  Cunning wish for pulse is the tech!

Sincere Props to John, bow down to the Mexi-Homie!

props to Dave for again letting me build a deck from his card pool.

Slops to Gohan for letting not screwing up and letting that kid "beat" you.  PAY ATTENTION NEXT TIME!

Major, major slops to that punk ass Scott kid.  You almost had a lynch mob waiting in the parking lot to take care of you.  Being a cocky obnoxious asshole will only get you one thing... hospitalized.

Oh, before I forget, here is the ruling I was talking about for Dreadnought.

Great job, John. On the Blood Moon idea, why don't you use one of each? Just a thought but maybe that could give you an entirely new dimension of NBLH that hasn't even considered yet.

The problem darren is if you run one of each they are mutualy exclusive.

If you have out B2B and drop the blood moon, everything will untap, and if you have out the moon first, the B2B does nothing.

Running the bloodmoon was my suggestion since it will allow him access to mana (since his deck supports red and has enough basic lands)  and hopefully not allow his opponent to a color they can use.

Darren please post my dreadnaught question in a big boy forum so I can have justice!

The basic question is as follows

I have a volrath's shapesifter in play, with not creatures in my graveyard. (my opponent is sleeping and will not respond to anything I do.)
I pay one mana and cast the dreadnaught.  I choose not the sacrifice creatures equal 12 power.  The dreadnaught never comes into play and is instead put into my graveyard. (giving me a fat 12/12).

Current Rules Text
12/12, Trample.
If ~this~ would come into play, sacrifice any number of creatures with total power 12 or greater instead. If you do, put ~this~ into play. If you don't, put it into its owner's graveyard. [Oracle 2000/02/01]

The sacrifice is not optional. The last sentence is equivalent to "If you can't sacrifice enough power in creatures, put it..." [DeLaney 2000/02/21]

Since you cannot sacrifice enough creatures it goes to the graveyard right?

help!

PS darren I am working on a new deck for the next tourney....

Oh yes it goes to the graveyard.  I never disagreed with that.  The point I argued was that any other creatures in play go to the graveyard as well, as you must sacrifice them even if their power does not total to 12, which would take out your Shapeshifter.

no my question is does the volrath's shapeshifter stay in play.  Since the card text says, if you do, then... and if you don't, then...  my question is are you required to do so if you do not have creatures with power equal to 12.

Yes, you must sacrifice all your creatures if their total power is less than 12.

If you copy phyrexian dreadnought with volrath shapeshifter you must sac creatures up to power of 12 or the dreadaught (volrath in this case) goes to the graveyard...if you have out say 4 creatures like 2 BoP's and 2 Wall of Roots, you do NOT sacrifice them if you can't pay the 12 power sacrifice cost. read the current oracle text and learn rules.

Hmm. Listen to what I said: why not run one of each main, then you can use whichever one does the worst to your opponent. I didn't say stack them and I understand one cancels the other. Obviously building in a dead card isn't usually optimal, but (for example) AGAINST UR Fish, B2B is better than Blood Moon. Against me, B2B is the better option. Having one of each main, and one of each SB, wouldn't cause any MORE redundancy than having 2 B2Bs, or 2 Blood Moons, but can liven up the choices.
In Dad's deck, Blood Moon is probably BETTER than B2B, because it doesn't screw him out of red.

Also, I will drop the specific question about Shapeshifter, however:Trustworthy rules lawyer
As far as I can decipher, the "must" doesn't allow you to just not pay what you can, which is why Welder vs. Naught can get so ugly. I was watching Dave Allen (of the North) carefully manage his artifacts that went to the 'yard (via Yawgmoth's Will) to ensure he was keeping artifacts out of targetting range of an opponent's Welder.
So, as far as I have seen, the sacrifice is not optional on any level, no more than say, Lotus Vale. Likewise, SickBoy, and JOrlove are people whose rulings I have learned to trust.

Just for the record, for my deck, I think bloodmoon would work better most of the time.  However, when I built the deck, I thought about pitch to the FoW.

As to Josh's post.  He was absolutely correct.  I never actually played the deck before, or even play tested.  I went totally commando and did make some mistakes.  However, I think I drained the timewalk so I could swing the mana, but I may be recalling incorrectly.
