Yea, it's a shitty match-up.  I post having full awareness that Sligh really blows against Academy.  However, I still come in search of possible answers.  I also come to present a possible answer:

Obstinate Familiar
Odyssey - Rare
R

If you would draw a card, you may skip that draw instead.

1/1

Yea, it's extremely conditional, as if I couldn't tell.  However, this 40 cent crap rare can actually win games against Academy, and about any other deck that wins through decking with Stroke/Geyser.  This is certianally good against Academy, as it has no spot removal, and low amounts of counters.  I certianally would think that anyone who decided to play Sligh in a meta full of Academy, Worldgorger Dragon, and other infinate mana decks deserves to be shot.  But hey, this card begins to give Sligh decks a fighting chance.  There are plenty of other combo decks out there that don't win using infinate mana, and that is part 2 of what I want to discuss.  I have been long considering making my own variaty of Ankh Sligh, and want to ask about answer cards to combo decks like Turboland/Turbonevyn, Trix, Pandeburst, ect.  Please share thoughts on the matter.

Sorry to double post, but I forgot one important issue in any infinate mana deck.  Capsize is a bitch.  The most important thing is to keep Capsize from resolving.  Not easy, but not totally impossible...

Yeah, gotta watch out for that capsize that red can't do much about...ahh well.

Against any sort of twister recursion combo deck (lots of em) or replenish based combo (even more) a simple tormad's crypt first turn can shut them down.  I know that playing academy, I'd have a hard time with it, because I need to cast a few draw 7s to get started, and to have them removed means I lose.

vs. Trix, uhh, be faster, or umm... lose

In summary, combo is supposed to beat aggro...deal with it

your options against comob are these...

Red Elemental blast/Pyroblast:  Try to go counter magic against them.  Not really that good of an option since you have to run 8 blast to compensate for their draw, sligh has no draw.

Bloodmoon: great option and great against a variety of decks.  Most combo decks are multicolored.  Blood moon hurts them and it is not a wasted board slot agasint other matchups.

Price of progress:  Kill them quicker!  Race damage vs their combo.

all the other options vs combo are pretty conditional and only real with one specific match up.

Something to consider is ankh sligh.  Check Legend's post in the extreme vintage section.

Ankh sligh is very good vs lots of combo and comboesque decks.

Ankh kills Dragon dead.  All those lands coming into play kill them in 10 cylces with 20 damage and they cannot kill you with 10 colorless mana.

Ankh hurts turbo land

Ankh hurts growatog and tog with fastbond
