I would say the best way would be to decide which of the power cards you need.  If you are going to go straight for P9, then fine, but at least know your objectinve.  Breaking into the format will be something that is enjoyable, and for many, acquiring their power can be a fun experience.

I know that you dont want to hear visit ebay, but it is a good place to check out pricing.  You can get a feel for what a certain card is going for, and you make yourself aware of your best available alternative.

I would also suggest trying to trade some of your Type II cards to someone who is interested.  I think that it is generally hard to trade T2 for T1, but some people will do it if you overpay a bit.  (but overpaying in cards isnt as bad if you dont intent to play another format, or one that has rotated out)

I also know of a few people who have gotten their P9 through a card shop closing.  You can also get some really good deals from people who used to play magic, but dont anymore and are just interested in salvaging a few bucks.

Lastly, my advice would be:  BE PATIENT!  It can take a long time, but good prices and opportunities do pop up.  Dont be afraid to turn down a price because you think you can do better.

I hope this helps.  May your journey be a pleasurable one.  You can play with the cards the rest of your life.

Since you already know about ebay, consider tournaments.  Many tournaments offer power as prizes.  Also, to level the playing field, many allow for proxies.  Attempting to earn your power the hard way may prove more fun.

1) Play something 'budget' for a while.

2) Trade hot Type 2 for older toys. I got a spare Ancestral once for trading a playset of Call of the Herds and Birds of Paradise.

3) Raid old bins at some stores. Some places have boxes filled with 'crap' like Phyrexian Negators, Restricted Revised cards, and Gorilla Shamans.

well, i would say, go to tourney they are some people usually has T1 cards. Not everyone will put them together with T2 stuff, some of them will kept them in T1 binder.

true, getting T1 stuff must be patient. Get those that is needed that suit with your deck and your play style, the rest can come later.

How i've been aquiring various cards I need is: Trade/Sell/Buy.  I decided to mainly keep 1-2 strictly type 2 decks built.  If I use t2 cards in t1, I know I can always build a t2 deck with them (tog).  Selling my unused t2 cards is a great way to aquire some of the more expensive t1.  Lots of searching around various sites, you can often find someone getting out of magic and can get a 'steal' price.  Going to tournaments, you can often find someone trading t1 for t2/extended.  These people will often trade power/staples for newer cards being used.

The main thing is to stay patient.  It won't happen overnight unless you are forking out the big bucks.
