Mask is a deck that has always caught my eye.  Now that spoils was printed and long is out I have been trying to tune a mask deck that has a very good chance against dragon as well as the random aggro I come across at the sad local type 1 in Burbank.  I got an idea when I saw the venguer list with white, "maybe stp and balance will help me to solve the problems I have with mask." White also had artifact/enchantment removal so I decided to pull out my seals.

So far I have liked the white splash because it fills in the decks weak points quite well.  It allows for stp which this deck has been missing.  I find myself losing to dragon once I find my combo, even if I can get him to discard the reanimate spells.  sometimes an stp on a dying dreadnought has allowed me to spoils again for the win against artifact removal. The one problem I have encountered with stp is it givivng the dragon player another turn.

I think that the deck is more well-rounded metagame wise with the white splash, although it seems to be lacking focus.

This version opens space in the sb since it has two answers to dragon maindeck.

I am looking for input on the white splash.  Is it better than other colors?  Is it too unfocussed?  Is it worth cutting back on discard for? Are there any cards a white splash could use that aren’t on my post? Is white only good in venguer?

My list is still being developed but here is the version I am playing right now

Mana - 27
7 swamps
4 scrubland
4 polluted delta
7 solomoxen
1 mana crypt
4 dark ritual

Kill - 12
4 mask
4 nought
4 negator

Disruption - 12
4 duress
2 hymn  (going to go with either hymn or unmask, not sure which)
2 unmask
2 stp
1 balance
1 seal of cleansing

Search/Utility - 9
4 spoils
1 demonic consultations
1 demonic tutor
1 enlightened tutor
1 necropotence (maybe a vampiric tutor instead?)
1 will

Sb (I have spent most of my time playing the first game, help here would be great.)
2 stp
3 seal
3 lightning greaves
7 others

White spells

Balance – Mask seems to drop it's hand faster than my opponent does so balance often makes up for the discard effects I lost by adding white.  It also improves most any aggro matchup when it is drawn.  Frankly I am not sure this card belongs in the deck, but it does have synergy with the low creature count and the off color moxen add for more of a late game in the control match (since I usually don't have as much land as a control player does.)

Swords to Plowshare –this card is the reason I added white.  it improves many matches.  It can take down welders and other problem creatures aswell as hold off the dragon decks.  I also like to use the life gain on a dreadnought that is going to be killed, making it possible to spoils again.

Seal of Cleansing – The seal in the md is for null rods and chalices.  This is the disenchant effect that mask is mising.  I’m not sure how to balance these with the swords. I like 2 swords and 1 seal, but this is mostly because I am afraid of dragon.

Enlightened Tutor – this is something I am trying in place of vampiric tutor.  Two life seems like alot in this deck since spoils of the vault makes this deck tick.  Life is more often a limited resource in this deck.  Enlightened tutor seems better than vampiric except that my white utility cards aren't fetchable with it.

Black spells

Unmask – I like this card too much to drop it completely.  Although the pitch is a high price having "free" protection for the combo and duresses 5 and 6 is very appealing.

Hymn – I would like to cut for the unmasks (or vice versa), but I can't decidce which to go with.  Hymn takes two cards for one, as opposed to the one card for two of unmask.  The hymns are also easier to hardcast.

Vampiric Tutor (or the lack of) – the spoils makes the deck run and that the vampiric could possibly be substituted for an enlightened tutor since it searches for the combo, it's an issue of 2 more life which I feel is a precious commodity in a spoils based deck that takes 2 turns to kill.  On the other hand vampiric is unmaskable and gets balance and stp.  Should this go in even if I cut the unmasks?

Necropotence - Necro hasn't been pulling it's weight in my testing.  The spoils deal so much damage that necro is a dead draw more often than not.  Would a vampiric tutor be more consistent?  Is tutoring > drawing random cards in this deck?

wow, there were quite a few gramatical errors and points that didn't make sense in the first post.  Sorry to have put everyone through that, I didn't mean to break the coherency rules on my first post.  I hope these explanations make some sense.

Err....  You're running spoils, and you're worried about two life from Vamp?  I'm sorry, I just don't see it.

he meant spoils of evil duh

hehe.   on a sidenote.. it is kind of not making sense.. and reading your "notes on cards"      Duh

I do not however like unmask.  i hate pitching cards to cards unless it's FoW.   It just almost always ends up midgame being "god dammit i wish i had that card still"

I really don't think you need StP to much, especially when you have 12/12 tramplers  It also significantly weakens your control matchup, which is some bad I hear.

Overall, I just think that Vengeur Mask is a stronger build. It doesn't lose steam after going balls out, which I've noticed this deck does. And random losses(although not really common) don't much appeal to me.
