Right, I forgot to mention that. I don't think this should be extended to even any other black or red CARDS, and certainly not any other color.
My question is: this mechanic reminds me of Shaman's Trance, in that it only says "if" without actually giving you a way to pay the extra mana. The current wording sounds like it would do nothing normally, and would only become relevant if two Spheres of Resistance were out (or some such).
I think this should use kicker, or if you're really adverse to that (because the word 'kicker' is really stupid), we can just use the old Undergrowth/Primitive Justice/Taste of Paradise wording.

Or kicker! I'm not so certain Kicker would be appropriate. Kicker always did something when the spell resolved. This needs to modify the spell as it is being played. |

I don't want to use Kicker. I agree that the Undergrowth/Primitive Justice/Taste of Paradise wording would work (and I've used it before on other cards), but it doesn't seem necessary here? I actually based the above cards on the Oracle wording for the Breaking Wave/Ghitu Fire/Rout/Saproling Symbiosis/Twilight's Call cycle from Invasion:
You may play ~this~ any time you could play an instant if you pay 2 more to play it.
Which became:
This spell is colorless if you pay 2 more to play it.
Have I swayed anyone, or is it going to be:
As an additional cost to play Decapitate, you may pay 2.
Destroy target nonartifact, nonblack creature. It can't be regenerated. If its additional cost was paid, this spell is colorless.
and
As an additional cost to play Kiss the Flame, you may pay 2.
Kiss the Flame deals 3 damage to target creature or player. If its additional cost was paid, this spell is colorless.
Seems too clunky to me...

Personally, I see no reason to NOT make it a kicker. Isn't that the entire reason kicker was invented? Kiss the Flame   Instant Kicker  . Kiss the Flame deals 3 damage to target creature or player. If the kicker cost was paid, Kiss the Flame is colorless. By making it a kicker, you also have the added bonus of being able to use it under an Isochron Scepter. |

This lumps the colorless change into the resolution of the spell, which wouldn't exactly work. The template I used is actually what most optional additional costs come out to when not using keywords (such as Kicker or Buyback). By making it a kicker, you also have the added bonus of being able to use it under an Isochron Scepter. Any additional costs can be paid for under the Scepter, not just Kicker. |
