Simple poll.  Who is the best Magic Writer of all time?  Having read Mr. Flores' last article on SCG, I have to conclude that he is without a doubt the best ever.  Now I know that some people will like the funnier but decidedly less helpful Rizzo.  Others will attest to the power of Wakefield.  Still others will prefer the ambling insights of Tan.  And a few hardcore people will like edt's pragmatic approach.

For the money though, it is Flores and Flores alone that I think is a) good at providing insights into the game; b) being entertaining; and c) providing a good perspective on the history of the game.

Feel free to disagree...but your wrong...its Flores.

Steve is certainly an up and comer, but Flores has the longer CV and more experience.  So vote and explain.

Baxter's old lists were some of the worst "good" decks that I have ever seen. It didn't matter that one list had 4x Fountain of Youth, because it had 4x Balance. And I'm pretty sure he advocated the 20/20/20 split. Ugh.

So, not him. Not Rizzo or Wakefield, either, because we're not looking for the most entertaining writers.

Not Kai, because this isn't about who puts the most effort into the game.

Not Tan, unfortunately, because although he writes a lot, many other people could produce articles of a similar quality if they had time to write them.

You left of Smmenen, so it's between Flores and edt. I'm going to go back and read some of their stuff, and then vote.

My vote would go to a type 1 specific writer, and it certainly isn't going to Rakso ...I also believe the MOST important part of good Magic writing is mentioning me in your article.  Why isn't McSmmenycakes on this list?  I'm writing him in.

I'm pretty sure JP's service to the world by unleashing the Cinnamon Buns story ranks up there with the best of them, but I'll vote Flores for "Who's the Beatdown" if nothing else.

Smemmen was supposed to be on there.  And I could not remember John Shuler's name (inventor of the tournament report).   Those two should definitely be on there.  I am going to see if can change the poll.

And Baxter sux.  That was just a red herring

You've got to be fucking kidding me. Anyone who's anyone knows that there is only one best writer, and that is Josh Bennet. While he's a total featherweight when it comes to strategy, you didn't ask for the most important, and no one writes better than he does(did).

Josh Bennett was a staff writer for Wizards.  He did tons of stuff for the paper and digital Sideboard.  He was an excellent writer, but his stuff was mainly fluff.

http://www.starcitygames.com/php/news/archive.php?Article=Josh%20Bennett

At some point he got hired by Wizards to do event coverage, and while it's good as event coverage goes, that stuff is really pretty boring. His older SCG articles are the most pleasant Magic-related things to read there are. I would read them even if I'd never played a game of Magic in my life.

I personally wonder if their relatively strategy-free content is in any way responsible for those articles' quality.

Ric: You didn't ask for the writer of the most relevant Magic articles, or the most important writer. You asked for the best writer, I give you the man who writes the best. Very Happy

But the man who writes the best may not be the best writer. Writing is about communication, and if he has nothing to say, then, ultimately, no matter how good or how enjoyable his prose is, it falls short of being the best.

Hogwash and/or tomfoolery! Why, if that were the case, then why would anyone ever put Wakefield on such a poll? Eh? Mmm?

Honestly, if you're going to let Jamie "King of the Fluff" Wakefield on such a poll, there's no reason to disinclude Bennet.

Wakefield made a single substantive contribution to the game, convincing Alex Shvartsman and others that Secret Force was actually good in post Trix Extended, which it was.  He also made a few contributions in the tournament report arena as well as playing, like extra high land counts and more than 60 cards (though some disagree, hehehe).  He had a few, but not many contributions to the strategy side of the game.  Bennett wrote funny by lines about pros and reported on games.  Bennett was more of a reporter and less of a writer.

If all you've ever read of Bennet's work was his stuff for sideboard.com, then you're both missing out and missing the point. I freely admit that his 'official' work was not the best, but those articles are not what I've been talking about.

I voted for Flores, mainly because I remember being a fan of his back in the days of the Dojo.

I'm glad that Wakefield and Rizzo aren't on the list, because regardless of what anyone thinks of their articles, any value they had was 99% unrelated to Magic at all-- particularly if you average the two, which hurts Wakefield's score considerably.

I never have. Maybe it's because I'm a prima donna for T1 and also don't find him funny.

And Rizzo rambles too much.
