So I've been playing Cube now for the past 3 weeks, and I must say I love it.

(Cube is a format where you take a big box, stick 1 of every magic card in it, and draft with those)

KandyKid has built a really nice cube, both in card content and quality. Lots of FBB Duals in there, old beta rares, and he's even started adding power into it (LoA and Twister so far, Walk is next). Probably one of the biggest bombs in there is Cyclopean Tomb. That thing wins games on its own. He even has portal cards (the good ones).

Yesterday I built a house U/W deck. Master Healer + Time Elemental anyone? Jareth, Fat Moti and Kjeldoran Outpost highlight some of the kill included.

Kandykid had a brutal deck. Psychatog + Meekstone kills. Skeleton ship is pretty annoying too. And whoever said Erratic Portal wasn't playable can go fuck themselves Very Happy

Other decks yesterday were some R/G fatness featuring that Legends guy that has R/G in his cc, is a 4/4 and taps to add 2 to your mana pool. Living Death made an appearance too. Plated Slagwurm is an awesome Bribery target.

Best play of the day: I'm in topdeck mode, and my opponent is beating me senseless with a 2/1 shadow guy (Dauthi Jackal?) and I'm at 6 life. Topdeck Bribery, which normally would have been good, except he was at like 24ish life or so from my various white removal spells (and I was all out). Well, I cast Bribery, and to my surprise he has a.....Prodigal Sorcerer in his deck! -ping- yes I won.

Where else do you get to witness an Old Man of the Sea fighting alongside a Silver Wyvern and a Pearl Dragon? Where else would you get to see a Jabari's Influence cast on a Shivan Dragon? Whatabout Forcefield, when's the last time you saw a person use one of those to save his ass?

Cube is the best format ever. <3

Yeah, I've also heard this format referred to as Big Box Draft.  I love some of the crazy choices that people have to make.  Do you take Chaos Orb or Capsize?  That sort of thing.

We've tried a similar format a few days ago, inspired by this thread. It fucking ruled.

Pyro is even considering buying a box of CE for this very purpose.

I often play what we call "Wagic" with friends. It's like your "Cube" format except we have selected the ~1.000 "best" cards in Magic only (1 of each, including all fetchlands, dual lands and painlands). Then you form 24 random boosters with these cards and you booster / rochester draft them. This is really really cool because pretty often a 5th or 6th pick is strong.

Last week end we had a long Wagic game where I ended up drafting an awesome UB control deck with Dark Banishing, Palinchron, Diabolic Edict, Phyrexian Plaguelord, Nevynniral's Disk, Shadowmage Infiltrator, Icy Manipulator, Fact or Fiction ... splashing W for Swords to Plowshares, Vindicate and Exile. Drafting broken cards rules. And Bribery has won me many games  Very Happy

I keep a fine-tuned box of cards for just such an occasion. It's a lot more fun than playing only with the "best" cards.

My friends and I play something similiar which we call "everyday is Christmas!" It consists of two big boxes full of cards from Revised up to Seventh Edition, and there are a couple variations on how we play. Sometimes we just stack up a big deck that everyone draws from/uses as their library, with a seperate library for land, or we have a seperate library for each color, artifacts and land. In both of these cases, you choose which deck you draw from each time you can draw. Sometimes we make conventional decks out of what we can find, but we tend to do the random pile more often.

I too have a huge box, but it's not completely fine-tuned. I just wanted something to do with all those cards that are good to awesome in limited, and worthless elsewhere. It's probably several thousand cards at this point, and it's a ton of fun to draft with.

Sounds like a hell of a lot of fun. I've wanted to do this ever since I read the Big Box Draft article on Magicthegathering.com. Only problem is, I'm never gonna be able to get a copy of every single card. Is there any possible way to "emulate" a big box draft? Like maybe use random numbers to pick cards, and then proxy the picks onto lands or something? Anyone got any ideas?

If you really have too much time on your hands, you could print them all out, But that'll sorta ruin the fun, too.

Yea, I should mention that for transportation purposes, the box in question doesn't go over your standard 2000 card box holder (about the size of a duffle bag)

as new cards come in (whether cuz they'd make good cube material, or because they are pretty and look cool) some cards are cut to make room.

It gets better and better over time.

Karvek: Glad you guys like it Smile we've now pretty much established weekly tourneys for cube, and I think there's one during the weekday as well (can't be sure, I don't go to that one).

Being passed 3 Death Grasps is awesome.  It really is pure gold in a draft like this.

Well, about 1 year ago, me and Earl (Magi) started just playing out of a box of random cards i have gathered up over the years of me playing magic, these cards consited of big creatures, cool pictures, anythign old (you know, the stuff you go for when you are a newbie), this was fun as a creature with flying usually went a long way and removal was golden.

Anyways, as time went on, it was still fun to play, mainly bacuase it never got boring cause it was different every time.

Anyways, about 9 months ago, we went to a shop about 30 minz drive away from our homes and there i was this box of cards people were playing out of, same thing as my "cube" (even though it wasnt called that back then) so anyways, i asked what it was and they gave me the gist of it, sounded like a really cool idea.

So for the next little while i just played with other people's cubes (well, only two other ones existed in Van at taht time, that i know of, and i know abnout 90% of the magic players here). Eventually, my binders were packed full of cards and all these oldschool cards and dozens of fbb duals and oops i wasnt using, extra power and whatnot, so i decided to make one of my own. Now, i dont claim to have brought CUBE to Vancouver, as the whereabout are unknown to me, but i do take full credit for making cube more fun in Van because of my very diverse cardpool that i made available to myself.

Now my "cube" has every card you can think of that can be playable (exageration ofcourse). Its pretty big, an entire dufflebag to be exact, consisting of p10, 1 of each fbb duals, tapland, fetchland, talisman, diamdons, etc, juzaam, i dont want to name them all, but anything old and cool, is in here, old man, ali, siging tree, island of wak wak, you get the idea, mirror, nether void, abyss, etc, etc, etc.

This is by far the most fun i have ever had with magic, dare i saw, yes i shall, more fun than t1. In t1, i get bored to easily, the only thing that keeps me going is to pimp out decks, and i already pimped out everything under the rainbow (no pun intended if there is one there) so I'm playing cube more and more, as its rarely repedative and you can never finish a cube as long as new magic sets are being released. It gives you something to work on, not to brag, like many of you guys think im doing, but ask Magi, i have so many cards that i had some random peices of p9 floating around in my dufflebag for months, never even seeing daylight, and about 30 fbb duals laying on my desk for over a month, and i didnt flash em around, i never flash my cards around, HELL, IN MY MAIL TRADING BINDER, THE FRONT ROW CENTER CARD IS A BLINKING SPIRIT. I made it so all these cool cards get what they deserve, to be used, not to collect dust, and instead of giving them away or trading them away, I give dozens of other people the opportunity to play with these awesome cards that some of them have not even seem before.

Anyways, Cube is the best format in magic, just cause it does not discriminate agaisnt you, by that meaning, you dont need p9 to compete or playsets of drains or FoWz, which for many people are really hard to come by. Its a format that you can have fun with and that everyone can play. Even experienced limited (or whatever drafting is called) players have trouble playing cube since most have never used singing trees or old mans, etc, and they dont know what is in the cube, so no strategies can really be developed.

One last thing, if anyone wants a list of the cards in my cube, give me a shout, i may post it (although this would take abotu a week to catologue the cards)..

Have fun Cubing Very Happy

Yeah, I was thinking something like that. But it would definitely take a long time, and color copies of many of the cards would cost more in ink than the value of the original card itself

Kandy,
You need to hold a cube tournament. Have it be invite only or something. And have cards registered, 25 canadian to enter or somethin and have it be for a peice of power. I've never been able to play ina  cube draft yet, but sounds fun. Maybe at the next mirkwood tourny we can get together early and do a cube draft or somethin.
