My question is simple, but i want to be sure to know the correct answer:
Case A)
- I play an instant or sorcery spell (A) - pass priority
- Opponent counters it
- I fork the counter
Result: Spell (A) resolves.
Correct (assuming you have the Forked counter targetting the counter).
Case B)
- I play an instant or sorcery spell (A) - pass priority
- Opponent pass priority back
- I fork the spell (A) - pass priority
- Opponent counters spell (A)
In this situation, Fork fizzles ?
Incorrect.
You can't play Fork here as It has no legal target. Things would go like that:
- I play an instant or sorcery spell (A) - pass priority
- Opponent pass priority back
- Resolve spell (A)
Because 2 priority passings => resolve the top spell / ability on the stack.
Hence, you need to play Fork in response of your first spell. That being said, if the opponent then counters your first spell, Fork's only target becomes illegal upon resolution and Fork fizzles.
