Basically, for those of you who have been following any of my SCA reports, I've made mention from time to time of Free Scholars/Yellow Scarves. I have been asked to join that group of fencers recently, and will be playing my Free Scholar's prize in May. This consists of facing a gauntlet of Free Scholars as an exhibition of prowess.
I'm very excited. I've been working toward this for a while, and to finally have all that work pay off is great. I've been busting my ass for the last year, going to 2-3 events a month, 2 practices a week, and attending tournaments and teaching as well-- it's all been wonderful fun, and this is an amazing recognition of my efforts.
To make this more clear, I've copied this:
Criteria for consideration as a member of the Order of the Gold Scarf:
They must be considered the equal of their prospective peers in the basic weapons of rapier combat.
They shall have been obedient to the governing documents of the Society and the laws of the Kingdom of Atlantia.
They shall have consistently shown respect for the Crown of Atlanta.
They shall have set an example of courteous and noble behavior.
They shall have demonstrated support for the aims and ideals of the Society by being as authentic in dress, equipment and behavior as is within their power.
They shall have shared their knowledge and skills with others.
They shall have practiced hospitality according to their means and as appropriate to the circumstances.
They shall have made every effort to learn and practice those skills desirable at and worthy of a civilized court. To this end, they should have some knowledge of a wide range of period forms, including but not limited to literature, dancing, music, heraldry, and chess.
They should participate in Society recreations of several aspects of the culture of the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
The Duties of Free Scholars are:
To set an example of courtesy and chivalrous conduct on and off the field of honor.
To respect the Crown of Atlantia, to support and uphold the laws of the Kingdom of Atlantia and Corpora.
To enrich the Kingdom by sharing his or her knowledge and skills.
To support and uphold the Crown of Atlantia.
To enhance the renown and defend the honor of the Free Scholar's Lady or Lord.
Long story short, I'm totally a real life D&D character, and my level is probably in the mid to low teens.
