I wake up at 9 :30, inscriptions start at 11 :00. I wasn’t so sure about my deck’s final tune up. I was wondering if 3 Reef was 1 too much and if I was gonna play 2 Chain of Vapor maindeck. I take a breakfast then take a look around www.themanadrain.com . I take all my things, then realise I’m missing 4 Tormod’s Crypt… I’ll do the last minute modifications once I’ll be there. My dad drives me to Carta Magica, Montreal.

When I arrive there’s around 25 peoples waiting for the store to open, I do as they do. Cancerman ask me what I’m playing, I tell him Landstill, why would I give him false information? Once the stores opens I go ask for my dci # wich I had lost. I decide to let the 2 Chain of Vapor in and Jamino lends me Flooded Strand wich I’ll play in the place of the 3rd Reef. I did myself around 5 damage in all the tournament with the Reefs, they are so good. So I make all my decklist and sideboard, there’s 4 Tormod’s Crypt missing, I buy them at $3 each, no big deal…

Here is my Decklist :
LPP Landstill

4 Standstill

4 Force of Will
4 Mana Drain
3 Misdirection
3 Stifle
1 Teferi’s Responce

4 Lightning Bolt
4 Fire/Ice
4 Nev. Disk
2 Chain of Vapor

1 Lotus Petal
2 Shivan Reef
1 Flooded Strand
4 Volcanic Island
6 Island
4 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine
4 Faerie Conclave
4 Mishra’s Factory

Sideboard :
4 CotV
4 REB
4 Tormod's Crypt
3 Maze of Ith

Yeah that Landstill is unpowered...
The 44 persons tournament starts and I am ready.

This is a memory report, not everything went like I remember, sorry for that. + I'm french and I'm making this report in english so expect grammar errors Razz

Round 1 : B/W Pox

Game 1 : He gets a fast turn 1 Duress, I decide to let it resolve, he removes FoW. I drop Conclave. He Hymn to Tourach me on turn 2, things are coming bad. He gets third turn hyppie. I have 2 Lightning Bolt but no red mana either in play or hand… He, two times in a row, Vindicate my tapped Faerie Conclave (Combined with the Conclave already in play and the Island I had in play this would have get rid of the Hyppie). I find the red mana the bolts have my randomly discarted, thanks to Hypnotic Specter. He then plays Chimeric Idol. I concede not so long after not finding anything to do to remove the beats. I still feel good about the matchup.

SB : -3 Stifle +3 Maze of Ith

Game 2 : I start with Conclave, he starts with Duress removing FoW. I then drop Volcanic Island, Standstill. A few turns later of innactivity, he casts Hypnotic Specter. I untap burn the Specter, drop Maze of Ith and I have the Drain open. He tries tourach I Mana Drain then play Disk, I then contorl the game and go along 1 Faerie Conclave beatdown.

Game 3 : I play turn 2 Standstill. I never really got in pressure during that game, everything went the way I pretty much wanted it to go. I had Maze+ Disk + Standstill into play at the end of the game.

Matchs : 1-0-0 Games : 2-1-0

I go see around a bit what’s showing up, I see Workshops, Dragon, Jamino playing Mask, there’s 3-4 Academy Decks. I am very surprised there’s no Togs showing up, Luc Use The Force is apparently not there. There’s a couple of powered Landstill players. K-Run is running Parfait (!). Pairings are up.

Round 2 : Powered Landstill

Game 1 : The mirror sucks so much but apparently it won’t be a coin flip. For some reason he plays Teferi’s Responce over Stifle, agaisnt the rest of the field that’s awful, but agaisnt me, this is soo tech.
I get surprised one time with it, then I know what i have to deal with. I never had UU open to use my opening hand Mana Drain, this is no big advantage. His Teferi’s Responces were big advantage all game. After two counterwars about my Burn targeting his Landmen and his damn Teferi’s Responce always had the top, so he made his hand much faster than I did. He resolved Ancestral then soon after he found some nice beatdown objects. I still feel very good about the matchup, It’s like I couldn’t fight his deck.

SB : +3 Maze of Ith + 4 Red Elemental Blast –4 Standstill –2 Chain of Vapor –1 Lotus Petal (Don’t ask)

Game 2 : I insanely topdecked, I had 3 Maze of Ith into play between the 6 first turns. I had every thing I needed to win that game, I resolved early Disk and I was holding couples of Rebs.

Game 3 : This game was crazy timing we are low on time and he shuffle into piles… I tell him not to but he doesn’t listen… The game starts and I am in business but still, low on time. Then suddenly I start the beats. I was sitting face to face with with clock . Around the end of the game I looked at the clock (it was showing time left), it was displaying  "00 :12", I quickly attack and give the turn. He untaps, draw, and the clock rang, five extra turns. I ended up beating him down on the the fifth turn. Nice thing I gave him the turn!

Matchs : 2-0-0 Games : 4-2-0

Round 3 : Trix (Why do peoples still play Trix)

Game 1 : He got bad draws and I quickly manage to attack him. He tries to Illusion for the life boost but I Stifle. He really wasn’t lucky.

SB :+2 Reb + 2 Tormod’s Crupt –1 Teferi’s Responce –3 Lightning Bolt

Game 2 : I don’t side everything because I wan’t to let the deck have it’s consistency, and it isn’t a really hard matchup either. He drops Scrubland then play Duress. I untap Waste his Scrubland. On his turn he doesn’t play anything… I have Strip Mine in my hand… My deck give me 2 Mishra’s Factory and I start the beat, until death.

Matchs : 3-0-0 Games : 6-2-0

Round 4 : Goblin

Game 1 : He starts with turn 1 Lackey, I have no burn but a Stifle to prevent early Siege GC. He attacks, I Stifle lackey, he casts Goblin Piledriver. He then doesn’t stop the beat and I don’t have an answer to most of his threats. Sometimes goblin is just goblin…

SB : +4 Chalice +3 Maze of Ith –3 Stifle –1 Teferi’s Responce –2 Chain of Vapor –1 Lotus Petal(Don’t Ask)

Game 2 : Chalice is Chalice. I casted 3 Stnadstill during the game. He hits for 16 with PoP and that’s it.

Game 3 : Chalice is Chalice. I’m trying to find a manland while he is trying to find Mountains, when he hits 5 Mountains he hardcasts SGC, wich I Mana Drain, next turn, he hardcast another SGC wich I drain too. I then find the manland and get his life to 0. Good thing I was holding the Drains twice!

Matchs : 4-0-0 Games : 8-3-0

Round 5 : Powered Landstill
Usually I would have made ID but he is 3-1-1

Game 1 : Boring match restarts. He opens with Conclave as I do. He then untap and casts Standstill WTF! I draw more landmen than him then I beat him under his own Standstill. I felt like he wasn’t very familiar with the deck…

SB :  +2 Maze of Ith +4 REB –4 Standstill –2 Chain of Vapor

Game 2 :I pretty much have this game under control, I resolve early Disk and start the beats. I have MoI as backup. The round ends with 35 minutes left I take a look around. Short and sweet.

Matchs : 5-0-0 Games : 10-3-0

Round 6 : Parfait (K-Run)
We ID

Matchs 5-0-1 Games : 10-3-0

TOP 8 :

Round 7 : Stax

Game 1 : I deal with his early trisk with double Bolt. He can’t find red mana and he has City of Traitors and a tapped Mana Vault. He makes pretty all the damage to him himself. I made him 3 damage.

SB : +2 Maze of Ith +4 Chalice–3 Misdirection – 1 Teferi’s Responce –2 Stifle

Game 2 : Everything is nice until he Stifle my Disk, at this point it’s ok but my CoV was on the stack targeting it… So no effects and Disk goes back to hand, it got into play off Drain and I only have 3 mana into play. He then plays with a dirty Welder to wich I have no answer to. That was bad game and bad sideboard… At least I did not see Chalice. I didn’t feel Chalice was a very big help agaisnt this deck, for some reasons…

SB : -4 Chalice +4 Tormod’s Crypt

Game 3 : He resolve early SoR, so funny. I drop a third turn Standstill. And I will find an answer to pretty much everything he will be playing. I loved that game. When the game is over Tom Bombadile comes and tell me I’m playing him on next round.

Matchs : 6-0-1 Games : 12-4-0

Round 8 : Dragon (Tom Bombadile) 7th in Canada
The match went so fast I don’t remember much of it so sorry for the shortness of it.

Game 1 : He starts with Duress removing Stifle. He then plays Compulsion. I waste his Bazaar. I have Disk into play, he Chain of Vapor my disk… Resolve. I have 3 cards in hand, 2 Disk which he knows from Duress and 1 Stifle which he doesn’t know. He tries Combo, GG. Nice Topdeck.

SB : +4 Tormod’s Crypt – 1 Teferi’s Responce –3 Misdirection

Game 2 : I draw like GOD would do, I draw 3 Fow and 2 Wasteland in the very first turns. The Fows targets 1 City fo Solitude and 2 Xantid Swarms. The game ends up with me having Tormod’s Crypt and Nev. Disk into play.

Matchs : 7-0-1 Games : 14-4-0

Finals : Sligh (Yeah WTF Sligh got up there)
Now I am really fucked up, I might be confusing all 3 games...

Game 1 : Do not underestimate ur Sligh opponents, that’s what Shockwave said into his Landstill Primer…
I keep a normal hand, he opens with Grim Lavamancer. He has 3 1/1 into play and I'm holding 2 F/I and I have a Disk into play. I decide to use my F/I, some would have did something else, but it's the way I went, and it's completely debatable. It ended up I won, don't ask me how (thanks for still being the report)...

SB : +4 Chalice +3 Maze of Ith –3 Stifle –1 Teferi,s Responce –2 Chain of Vapor –1 Card I don’t remeber

Game 2 : Everything was very nice until he casts PoP, I am tapped out, I’m holding FoW but no blue card to remove. I played like 3 Standstill during that game, so bad it did not give me a blue card.

Game 3 : I keep a 7 land hand(Containing Maze of Ith, Volcanics, Lendmans, LD). Then my deck start being friendly.. He plays a Mountain, Jackal Pup, I play Standstill. I untap then Strip his lone Mountain. He knows if he break Standstill I CotV. Pretty much all the game went under the Standstill since he couldn't find mana source until a few turns before his death.

Matchs : 8-0-1 Games : 16-5-0

So I take the 150$ prize and go home.

Props :
+Jamino for lending me Flooded Strand (Which I still have Very Happy)
+Myself for winning a tournament with an unpowered deck and being undefeated.
+Shivan Reef
+The Clock
+Ever1 at carta for being very nice!

Slops :
+Ontarians that did not come
+Ontarians that did not come
+Me for not playing Noble Panther in the SB

Awesome job!! You play exactly my decklist, except a little different manabase. Are the Shivan reefs indeed worth it? Did you like the chains of vapor? Or would you leave them out in the future? I also run two - they help against stuff that happens to get through.

The Shivan Reefs had pretty much the same impact Volcanic Island had, on the 8 rounds I played I did myself 4 damage with the Reefs wich is less than I would have do with 2 Fetchlands but Reef doesn't remove a land card, which the sweetest thing that makes me play it. I think it's a personnal choice tough.

The 2 Chain of Vapor found their house for a little time, that's sure, they are very useful at the moment. I don't see what could replace them anyway, I think it's best way to go with unpowered Landstill.

nice report and congragulations.  Sounds like a combination of decent to good draws and smart playing/sideboarding won the day.  I have to just take this moment to cheer for sligh Smile.  It is odd for sligh to get 2nd, it'd be interesting to see what kinda matchups and draws he got that day also.  Anyway I'm also a landstill fan though I play U/w atm, what's the primary differences in terms of matchups and overall strength?  Red is always an attractive splash color because of the versatile SB answers and MD fire/ice.  Anyway, gj!

I don't know why peoples are still trying to splash other colors than red into landstill. Red is by far the best color to splash. Basicly because ur creature removal can also be thrown to ur opponent's head, Swords to Plowshare cannot.  Decree of Justice seems interesting indeed, but I'm not sure about it's synergy with Disk and it's fundemental turn effect, most of the time it will just win games you would probably have won anyway, with the the landmen AND burn route, so it doesn't add much more to the deck White doesn't give pretty much to the sideboard. While you have REB with red. This said. I see no good reasons to play White OVER Red into Landstill.

Well to be fair the player playing sligh was probably more important than the deck itself. Dave Rood got 2nd at a PT after all...

Yes, David Root is a really good player, but he was lucky in the semi-final against me... I won game 1 pretty easily, in game 2, I put him down to 2, I was at 15!! I had 4 turns to draw a burn or at least, some goblins, but I drew 4 lands in a row!! In game 3, we were both at 3, he had cadet and Mox Monkey into play, I hard cast a SGC, he topdecked a burn for the win...

These were my matchups
1- Dragon  0-2
2- R-G Beats  2-0
3- Mask 2-1
4- WW 2-0
5- R-G Beats 2-0
6- Landstill ID

Quaterfinal- B-W Parfait 2-0
Semifinal- Sligh 1-2

By the way, nice repport and congrats for your first place!!

Yeah I know who you are, but one thing is missing me, you won agaisnt Parfait! This shouldn't even be  possible, it's not like it was a scrub player, it was the creator of the deck! I want explanations K-Run...

This is it link me to this evolution someone!

Go!  {W} Parfait  {W} Go!

Well, yes Raph is a good player, but he did one error that gave me the game. I had 2 cadets and a lackey that attacked him, but he sword a cadet (instead of the lackey, because he was low on life...), so I drop a Siege-Gang into play... The next turn he tutor for a moat and cast it, and he casted a zuran orb... But I started to sac my goblins, he loose his land one after the other, I was able to deal enough damage to kill him...

2nd game, I had only a land, I droped early goblins, destroyed his Belcher with my crash (4th turn)... I destroy his scroll rack with my vandal. I destroyed his 2nd belcher with an other crash. He cycled his decree to kill my goblins (I had 2-3). He cast an ivory mask, the game stall a little bit from here, I drew only burn spell... He casted a dragon, I burn it and cast a piledriver. On his next turn, he bring back his dragon from his grave to his hand, but have not enough lands to cast it the same turn. He passed the turn. I reckless charge my piledriver and attack for the win.

Parfait isn't a really good matchup for goblins... but not as bad as dragon, at least goblins have some chance to win... I thanks Ralph for swording the wrong goblin, that gave me the matchup!! Wink

The only person who was able to get away with top8 lists was Paul Hunt, and he didn't attend the tourney, so I guess it won't be for this time.
