I just moved down to the Richmond, Virginia area, and after a long break from DCI-brand Magic, I think I'd like to get into more Type 1. Are there any particular shops I should visit? I know Richmond Comix has cancelled their Type 1 tourneys for lack of interest. The other stores I've talked to say they have pretty casual scenes (but they might not know good Type 1 when they see it). Any ideas?

[I figure this should probably be posted in the Community board, but alas, no posting rights.]

I personally play at One-Eyed Jaques, which is in Carytown. There are a about four serious Type 1 guys who show up from time to time and other people like me who fit into the super budget side of things, but we are still fairly good. I know of one guy who has a Control Slavery and another with URphid and Mask, as well as assorted other stuff.

The Type 1 scene in Richmond has dried up to an extent, mostly due to burnout from the more hardcore players thanks to last year's GenCon.  However, T.A.G  (total access games)  has held type 1 tournaments in the past, and Pete from StarCityGames has been very willing to hold Type 1 side events at the Richmond tournaments.  So there is hope.
You will always be able to find a game at One Eyed Jacques which is more than I can say for the other stores, but the quality is very VERY hit or miss.
Your best bet for getting quality opponents is to check with TAG and ask about Type 1. The good players come out for TAG's events, so if you can get to one you'll meet some play partners.

If you don't mind a "short" drive, there's a weekly Type 1 in Blacksburg (Virginia Tech) at Fun and Games.  There's a few TMDers there (riggy, and I can't remember the other guys' handles).  The competition is decent, they allow 5 proxies, and I think the entry fee is like $2.  And every 4-6 months I make the drive down Smile

lol!  There's more than one paragon in Richmond Wink

Also, GP:DC will be having a type 1 side event on April 18th that plenty of us TMD'ers, to include many paragons, will be attending.  There is a thread about it here:

Being one of those Blacksburg residents (until may hopefully) I can attest to a strong type 1 presence here with tournaments every thursday at 6pm.  Usually only a meager showing but mostly quality players with mostly quality decks always make for a fun evening.

A full 25% of the t8 at GenCon came from Richmond, VA so it actually one of the most populated t1 areas (for its size) that I know of.  If you draft at all several t1 players show up on Fridays at Richmond Comix for the drafts there and squeeze in games b/t rounds.

Just a short drive up from North VA is Dream Wizards in Rockville MD (very southern MD)... they have very nice bi-monthly tournaments, and the prizes are pretty nice... (the prizes of the last 6 months have been Time Walk, Juzam, Workshop, and Boxes)

I used to live an hour closer to Dream Wizards, and still never managed to find time to go to their events other than PTQ's. I've always heard good things about their Type 1 setup, so if I get to the competitive level, I'll be sure to check it out. Maybe you're more dedicated than me, but Rockville is kind of a haul from Richmond.

Richmond is a bit of a drive from WNC, but I think has a much larger T1 presence than Atlanta. If there is anyone from places like Greensboro or around WNC that is also looking for a place to play, let me know, I am trying to get in touch with local players and unfortunately Richmond is the closest place at ~350 miles.

Yep, I played in it today. If there had been more notice, I would have posted something here about it. I'm sure most people were at Regionals anyway.

When he says budget, what he really means is insanity. I took careful notes to try to write a report about it, but it wasn't even worth it. The field was such:

1 Powered Stax-ish beatdown
1 U/G Madness
1 Extended Rock
1 Extended Angry Hermit
1 Type 2 Mono-White Control
1 Type 2-ish U/G Mesmeric Orb

I think a lot of people just weren't aware that it was going to be Vintage so they got stuck playing with what they had. Hopefully it'll settle down next month.

This time around, it was $7 entry, and everyone got a Japanese token figure. Top 3 got a few picks of the new DCI land.

I'm up in Blacksburg as well.  I know that we've still been doing t1 on thursday nights at 6pm, but I think it's proxy 10 now.  I'm also unsure of how much it is to play, $2/$3, something like that.
