Is FFXI any good?

BTW This is secretly a post to announce my triumphant return to the intarwebnet and consequently - competitive Magic.

It's good to be back.

Seriously though, I'm heavily considering getting FFXI now that I have cable. Does anyone play?

I'm in a monogamous relationship with Type One Magic.

My roommates have never even mentioned FFXI to me, and they're pretty gaming-intensive people. Right now it's Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox, and StarCraft (NOT Brood War) on the computers (because they're old school).

Welcome back!

I assume D2 means diablo 2, and bnet is battlenet. "LoD" is probably like "lords of (d-something)" darkness, maybe.

Wait, isn't this another Non-Magic thread? (Misassignment of forum = game loss! :) )

I think it's "Destruction", but I'm too lazy to Google it right now.

It's Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction, the expansion. Battle.net is shit and the expansion is impossible to find outside of the 3-game set that includes Diablo, Diablo 2 and LoD.

Try D2C v1.0 on the open internet. That's the best.

Sorry I posted in the wrong area - I was just a bit excited about having the intarweb again. Smile

Thanks for the warm welcome. I'll let everyone know how FFXI is. Smile

Edit: Oh, and I may get into D2LOD assuming FFXI doesn't consume my life. Let me know where TMDers play. I'll play either an Amazon or a Paladin. I have multiple Level 80+ characters w/ my friends (we LAN a lot) so I'm experienced. Smile

I played D2X for quite some time, but i quit during version 1.09 (right before they started cracking down on map-hack).  I quit because I was a 100% legit player, and I was heavily involved in the item market, including selling items via ebay.  I made close to $1000 a month for a while there, but the arrival of the 'ith' items completely killed the market for anything, and was quite degenerate and made the game completely unenjoyable.

On the FFXI note, I have avoided getting into it on PC because the only game I want to play on my PC is Counter-Strike, but I have the hard drive (and FFXI) for my PS2 on pre-order and will have it no later than the official day of it's release; maybe before.  If anybody currently plays, hit me up.  Fo' Shizzle.

Huuuuuuuh? I don't play on bnet, I'll only play multiplayer with people I know from the real world with the TCP/IP thing. Especially because nobody on bnet plays Classic and I hate v1.10. Also, up to this point, I've never traded for an item; I'm only using stuff I've found/gambled for myself.

Ah ok, D2 Classic I can see why you're not on bnet. Seriously though, 1.10 has been a ton of fun, especially compared to 1.09. However, it does require LoD ofcourse Smile - I just find it weird you can't find a seperate LoD anywhere...

These things become more difficult when the game is older than the vast majority of players' computers. (See also: StarCraft.) IIRC, Diablo II is like four years old. In the gaming industry, that's forever.

All I know is that 1.10 added spell timers. Spell timers suck. You haven't quite lived until you've dumped a full 900-point mana bulb worth of Hydra onto the screen in a matter of seconds. It really is a sight...just plain disgusting. The timers also made me feel severely outgunned; like I was taking a 12-guage against a bunch of bitches with AK-47s. Technically, it's supposed to make the game more challenging, but I'd rather not get my challenges from having my already weak-ass sorceress handicapped to the point where she's boring to play.

I'm also a bit reluctant to even try LoD (although if I did find a seperate copy of it, I'd certainly snatch it up) since it seems there's so much more to keep track of in that game and a lot of the items I've seen from it are downright ridiculous, thereby cutting down on the challenge.

However, it's damn hard to succeed in hell. It requires actual skill, moreso than godly items.

You say that, when you use all the Godly items there are  Smile ...It's hard by yourself, but it's still far too easy in groups.

I haven't seen you above lvl85 yet.

I'm at almost 95.

That's how hard it is.

I haven't quite gotten to Hell in v1.0 (had to restart after uninstalling v1.10), but I'm guessing it's plenty difficult considering some of the things I've been seeing in Nightmare like uniques' auras affecting all monsters on the map which they apparently toned down sometime after v1.0.

Either way, v1.0 is far superior for Classic.

Yes, I have purchased this atrocity of a game and by odd chance ran into st00mie on Leviathan, the same server on which I am. If any of you get this game, let me know and I'll get you a worldpass so you can party it up with TMDers ^^
