Right down the street... Yay, no long drives.
A friend and I were going, amongst us a few good decks. Hate-Sligh (ankh sligh maindeck rods, moons), Sui-Braids (sui black with braids), Bad-Gay-Rish (gay r-with my random cards, Goblin Pool Party (FCG with my random cards).
We get there and alot of our other friends are there and we all wait for more deck registration sheets to be printed up. When we're done, we register. Lucky me, I get the last door prizes (a deck box). I then trade Andy 2 beat chain lightnings and $4 for a pack of super ultra japanese sleeves. You know, the kind that are just uber.
I let my friend use fish and I decided to play goblins, just to let everyone know that FCG and Goblins are not a joke in type 1. Two goblin decks made top 8 at the tournament. (note: actually, it was sot of a screwed up tournament and the fact that I am an incredibly lucky guy).
= = =
Round 1: Anthony (combo deck using Trinisphere and Pyrostatic Pilllar (don't ask)) Game 1: Something along the lines of turn two recruiter turn three food chains combo out. No force of will. game. Game 2: I win the game in about 3 turns with one land on the table. Probably a few strips and wastes in my grave.
1-0
Psuedo-Round 2: Scott (GAT) Game 1: Pile Driver <- Mana Drain. Food Chain <- Mana Drain. Ringleader <- Mana Drain. He has not played brainstorm library, impulse, ancestral...... I block his growing dryad while I get countered. Then I run out of meat shields. Game 2: Turn one lackey leads to turn two gang commander. Psychatog blocks gang commander who blows up tog. I get hit by one dryad for 5 and die because I take 15 damage from my mana crypt.
1-1-0
I don't seam very lucky do I? Then the tide changes.... We repair for round 2 and I never see blue for a while.
"Real" Round 2: Elliott (Something with workshops) Game 1: Lackey go. Workshop go. Swing, warchief, piledriver go. Masticore go. I lose my lackey next turn but I start swarming him. By the time he's facing down a piledriver and 5 others, all he has on board are workshop, masticore, 2 moxes, one land. Blocks driver, kills something. Draws. Dies next turn. Game 2: He drops his entire hand inclduing a trike. I waste his mana. He swings. I combo out shortly after.
2-0-0 (second time I got to do the combo)
Round 3: Jason (Sigh, more workshops.) Game 1: Trinisphere and sphere. Ok I sit on 3 lands.. all I need is one more. By the time I draw my 4th I am dead. Game 2: I open with lackey.. Lackey is good and the goblins swarm from skirke ridg like lava, burning and devouring everything in their path. Game 3: Sphere on the table I play recruiter. He's not playing counters so I can combo out next turn. Unfortunately he drops a 2nd sphere of resistance. We each sit there drawing. He draws lands, I draw goblins slightly to large to cast. I messed up, I should stacked a matron or recruiter to refix my stack but it doesn't matter. He got mana flooded. Finally I see a 2 to cast goblin while I am stuck on 4 lands and 2 spheres on table. Next turn I blow up a sphere, before tinker dies sac for mana, I go crazy and attack. He plays a sol ring, which gets counter by a chalice for 1 from earlier. I then take my turn and go out from there. Warchiefs, ringleaders replenish my hand, and the drivers come. In the cource of all this, we call the judge twice (I think this guy wrote that other report. I don't be a jerk, but I can see why Andy gave him the game loss for unsportmanlike behavior. He had chalice for 1, play sol ring. My Turn. I notice the sol ring. And he argues that it's to late and it should be remain in play).
3-0-0
Round 4: Rich (Control Slaver) So we meet again... We played a month ago in RI for a mox ruby, I had maindeck hate for him with sui black but Platinum beatz was unstoppable. (my fualt back then, i shoulda sided in contagions to weaken his angel and kill his welders). Game 1: I win the dice roll. That means I get to play Lackey. I win. Game 2: To much details, probably wasn't interesting story. I lose. Game 3: We go back and forth for a while. I have sided in hate to make sure his mindslavers don't go off. (root maze) Then I realize that root maze only makes it come into play tapped. It untaps next turn... hahahaha.... yeah..... So root maze does not kill 3 combo decks, only two (TPS n Dragon). Such a close game though.
3-1-0 (No big deal, 1 loss, plus I lose to a guy who'll probably win the tournament, which he does)
Round 5 - Adam Clark (Gah.... workshop stuff) Game 1: Oh god it's a 1st turn trike. I am down to 4 life from trike beats when I combo out. He's sort of surprised. I then notice how the 6th mountain I play over another fetch was helpful. (I play different picture mountains so I can tell...) Game 2: Stupid trinisphere and sphere.... Game 3: I keep my hand, he mulligans. Maybe he'll get FoW or something.... Lotus, Mox, Warchief, lackey -> Lackey. he drops a land. I drop a land and 2 prospectors. I swing. I swing with my team of 1/1's (no drviers :-\ ) And win.
4-1-0 (I am lucky....... Very lucky.....)
Round 6 - Cyle (Goblin Sligh splash blue for ancestral, time walk) Game 1: Damn.... I lose. Game 2: Combo out. Game 3: He fetches for volcanic. I waste, he ancestrals. He drops a mountain. He stays on one land while I struggle to keep his goblins off the table and make a counterattack. Miraculously, he draws about 5 more cards after the ancestral, no land. He plays raging, next turn, grenades it. Next turn plays raging. I win that round. He shows me his hand.... grenades and fireblasts (i think). I am at 4 life. Yikes.
5-1-0 (Do you think I'm blessed yet?)
I also am trying to find room for a 4th Gempalm Incinerator now. They're sooooooo good. It owns welder.
Round 7 - Carl (Non-control Slaver) Game 1: I lose... The FCG primer says I should race him with my combo, But it's late and I wanna leaver so I side out my combo and just play straight up aggro, REB's, Arti Mutates) Game 2: SMASHIE!!!!! Game 3: Wheel of Fortune and Mindslaver later.... I say "Holy $hit, my whole deck is gone." I have Food Chain and Matron, Ringleader, and others in hand. I have ample mana. He plays food chain and fetches recruiter. Plays recruiter and stacks my deck. Plays ringleader. Ok I'm done slaving you. Ok..... Next time I get a turn I recover and win. This guy had no experience with FCG he confesses. I also assume he didn't read the primers. During the cource of the game he played a brainstorm and I said countered while I'm tapped out. He sorta looks at me and I point to his chalice. Later in that game I REB a Thirst after he sacs his chalice because of something or something.
6-1-0 (Now do you think I'm lucky?)
= = =
I hope this report wasn't too long... but to make it longer, a quick overview on how some of my friends did?
Friend with my Gay Fish: 5-2. he won the pseudo-round 2 but lost the real round 2. He also loses round 1 because the other guy was a jerk. They were 1-1-0 when my friend got DQed because he forgot to shuffle back into his deck 2 cards removed from Grim Lavamancer. Someone's box had slid over them.
Friend with Gay-R: 5-2 Friend with EBA: 5-2 Friend with Landstill: 2-3? drop Friend with Workshop: 2-3? drop Friend with "Pete-Control": 4-3? Friend with Fruity-Pebbles: 3-4? Friend with Hate-Sligh (similar to mine): 4-3?
= = =
TOP 8: U/G Fish, Keeper, Slaver, Slaver, Food Chain Goblins, Non-Food Chain Goblins, Rector Trix, and one other deck. To tired to go find out... must go sleep... long day. Cheap free soda didn't have enough caffeine.
Andy expalins how prizes will be selected and my luck runs out. First match I have to play against slaver.... Goddamnit. >_<
Me vs Eric Round 1: Stuff happens. I lose board position. One turn before he locks me with slaver. I try to combo out but he shows me mana drain, force of will, and timetwister?. Round 2: Turn one lackey gets forced with a time walk. Few turns later, I waste his underground and destroy his black lotus. He FoF's. I didn't want him to Yawgmoth's Will. Mox Jet, Underground, Volcanic -OR- Mox Ruby, Ancestral. He takes ancestral. At the end of my next turn, he brainstorms, I REB, then I realize my error. I didn't have another red source to cast artifact mutation on his sol ring. What's the significance of a measly sol ring? Mana That I didn't want him to have. He had 2 lands in play and about 4 in hand. So that was my last turn that I get to play and he wins. At one point he tries to demonic for a Time Walk. I prayed that he would find a time walk in his deck.
I lose... I entered top 8 as the 7th seat. The person in 8th seat played person in 1st seat. 8th Seat won so that means I get the 8th pick. Great... I get "rare" "valuable" "Hard to find" japanese fake-magic tokens drawn by some guy named Junjinjun Minianinaninanigushishishi. I was sort of ticked at that momemt, not because I lost but because the little kid (he was small) playing Rector Trix wouldn't get up to claim his prize so I could get mine. I was starving at that point.
Don't you just hate cocky little kids? Especially little rich ones who had full powered decks that I bet they didn't spend a dime of their own hard earned cash on? Not to mention he made his parents (or grandparents maybe) wait in the foyer room the whole day. They were there from when I entered to when I left.
All in all, it was a good day. Third power tourney I been to, top 8. As long as I rub my buddha statue's belly, light my incense sticks, and pray to my family ancestors (and my guardian dragon) I should be winning a lotus next one.
