I was just wondering about something that had recently came up in an mtg local tourney(with a supposed lvl 2 judge). he was playing all dual lands and I was playing  mono green LD. Ok so here's the question He played a dual(badlands) and I tried to wasteland it. He said to me dual lands were basic lands, so then I couldn't wasteland them. I dont know if this is true so im asking for some help. Also if this ends in my favor could he have even used a land grant to fetch a tropical island?

Dual lands are not basic lands, because having basic lands types is not the same as being a basic land. For example, a Badlands is a nonbasic swamp and a nonbasic ountain ("Land -- Mountain Swamp"). If they were basic then their Oracle wordings would be "Basic Land -- Mountain Swamp" but that is not the case. If it doesn't have the "Basic" supertype, it's not a basic land. Period.

Notice that Blood Moon will not make lands Basic either, so Price of Progress and Dwarven Miner still work under a Blood Moon.

Currently, the only basic lands are Swamp, Mountain, Forest, Island, Plains, Snow-Covered Swamp, Snow-Covered Mountain, Snow-Covered Forest, Snow-Covered Island, and Snow-Covered Plains.

Land Grant, Tithe, and the Onslaught fetchlands (Flooded Strand and so forth) can all fetch dual lands. For example, Land Grant can fetch a Tropicla Island because it looks for "forest cards" which is NOT the same as looking for a card named "Forest". Such a card would be unable to find a Tropical Island, though I can't think of any such cards off the top of my head.

Might I ask which Level 2 judge this is?  This is WAY too obvious of a question for one to be missing.

No longer a DCI Level 1 Judge.  Just a guy who likes rules knowledge.

A large problem with ancient L1 and L2 judges is that they never had to retest. Ever. So if one become a L2 like 7 years ago, and since then you haven't been very active, but you keep on renewing you'll be fine.

And then there is a large risk that you turn very very very bad.

Fortunately the situation described is not very common, but it does happen.
