If you could have only one card in a sixty card deck other than basic lands, what would that card be? (There are no restrictions on how many of that card you may have)

Example of my deck:

60x Vine dryad (I hope you go first)

OR

14x Mountain
46x Scent of cinder

Post your decks here, and if there is enough interest, I will host a tournament.

EDIT:
I got pretty excited, and decided to insert another deck:

24x Forest
36x Llanowar sentinel

Mishra's Factory? Or maybe Nether Shadow?

Mishra's factory would be okay, but it would lose out to the scent of cinder deck and the llanowar sentinel deck. The scent of cinder deck looks to be the most promising for now, ~6 damage each time you cast it starting the second turn is pretty damn good.

Playing with lands sort of makes it a totally different format than what I had in mind- but interesting still. Good luck getting people to play. Cool

Didn't Mark Rosewater already kinda cover this?

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=mtgcom/daily/mr93

I realize you're using basic lands, but it's essentially the same idea.

The basic lands make it very, very different. For instance, now you can play 47 Lightning Bolts, 13 Mountains.

For the record, I had no idea that mark rosewater came up with an idea similar to this. The way a tournament would work is that you create a deck with as many lands/spells as you would like. Then, you are given the perfect hand, and you can choose to draw either a land or the one spell a turn. This way, one deck will always win or tie (very similar to 3CB). And the results can be posted in the same way a 3CB would be.

Here is another sample creation:

5x mountain
55x Siege gang commander

This was done on MTGNews a while in a 30 Card/30 Basic Land format, and alternating draws of each, and Kindle was the winner. Muscle Sliver is also quite powerful. I'd have to dig up the thread to find out what else came close, and may do better in this format, but I have a sneaking suspicion Kindle is still the best.

I don't think kindle is as good as scent of cinder. Think about it:

kindle first: land, go
soc: land, go
k: land, kindle (20, 18)
soc: land, soc (14, 18)
k: kindle (14, 15)
soc: soc (8, 15)
k: kindle (8, 11)
soc: soc (2, 11)
k: kindle (2, 6)
soc: soc (-4, 6)

soc going first:

soc: nothing, go
k: land, go
soc: land, go
...
etc. Same result

Scent of cinder is better.

Mystic snake draws with kindle.

Scent of Cinder is faster in the earlier game, but Kindle is stronger in the later game. And what about playing more lands so you can cast 2 Kindles on the 4th turn? And I'm not sure if Mystic Snake draws with Kindle, because the Kindle player can play 2 kindles for each Mystic Snake, so eventually some will get through. In the later game, the kindles will be large enough that just a few kill kill the mystic snake player. Did you play this out?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but...
The Kindle deck is only running two mountains, so it can't get to a point where it can cast multiple Kindles. I think Mystic Snake wins it

MS1: Land go
K1: Land go
MS2 Land go
K2: Land Kindle for 1 (MS19)
MS3: Land go
K3: Kindle for 2 go (MS17)
MS4: land go (four lands up)
K4: Kindle for three MS:Countered. go
MS5: Swing for two go
K5: Kindle for four MS: Countered. go

And so on. If they try to Kindle the Snakes, it still get countered. I don't think that there are any timing tricks, the Kindle deck would need to add the capability of casting multiple Kindles on the same turn. Also, the Flame Burst deck might be better in case you run up against an opponent playing the Pardic Firecat(or whatevathehell that card is) deck.

That's the point, a proper "kindle" player would have probably 4 mountains, not 2.    Allowing multiple kindles per turn.    The first shown of the kindle deck was an example.

The ultimate deck against the Scent of Cinder thing:

10x basic land
50x misdirection

EDIT:

or if you're playing casually:

10x forest
50x living wish

search for stuff like endless strip mines, a beatstick, or just general meanness.

You probably want to play Willbenders so that you can win instead of draw.

My personal favorite:

20 Plains
40 Dive Bomber

This obviously breaks the format, though, so in the interests of fairness,  I don't think I'd play it.

In all seriousness, though, haven't all the best decks already just been listed? Is there anything we're missing?

If it's got 4 moutians, it gold fishes like this on the play.

Turn 1: Land (6 cards)

Turn 2: land, kindle (5 cards) 18

Turn 3: Land, Kindle (4 cards) 15

Turn 4: Land, Kindle, Kindle (2 Cards) 11, 6

Turn 5: Kindle, Kindle (1 card) Dead.

Muscle Sliver goes something like.

Turn 1: Land 20

Turn 2: Land, Sliver

Turn 3: Land, Sliver, Attack 17

Turn 4: Land, Sliver, Sliver Attack. (5/5) 9

Turn 5: Attack - Dead.

You need to beat a 5 turn goldfish to be playable I think.

My suggestion

4 Islands, 56 arcane denials.

Wins by decking very time.

Edit: Argh, Opponent *may* draw a card:(

Here is a deck that beats both decks when going second:

59x island
1x energy field

But in all seriousness for now here is the new banned list:

muscle sliver
kindle
energy field
scent of cinder

This should open up the playing field a bit.

Ravenous rats would be pretty key. It would hurt some of the slower decks in the format, and it would be much better then mesmiric fiend, especially against creature decks.

8x swamp
52x ravenous rats

But I just thought of the deck that will beat every other deck in the format:

Meddlingmage.dec

5x plains
5x island
50x meddling mage

This thing beats kindle.dec, musclesliver.dec and probably every other deck. BOOYAH!

Okay. Meddling Mage breaks the format. It turns the game into a coin flip (not that it wasn't approximately that, before). Everybody go home now. There's nothing more to see here.

though it is very powerful, i dont think the meddling mage deck will entirely break the format. for one thing, you dont really know what to name until your opponent plays their first card anyway. it can only be random guesses until your opponent actually plays their card. in many cases, it wont matter anyway, ie the kindle situation, but in other cases, not knowing what card your opponent will play will cause you to lose.

decks that could stop meddlingmage.dec could be something like the mysticsnake.dec. even a kamahlpitfighter.dec will beat meddlingmage.dec.

but if those decks dont appeal to you, remember the morphing creatures. meddling mage cant stop you from playing morphed creatures. exaltedangel.dec can beat meddlingmage.dec anyday.

my suggesttion to make this format work is to also include a sideboard. that way if you play kindle.dec and run into meddling mages, game 2 you can side in something like blistering firecats and morph them in. heres an example of what that deck would look like:

//Spell
40 Kindle

//Land
20 Mountain

//Sideboard
40 Blistering Firecat

a rule can be made so that a player can only can have one of their 2 cards in their decks at a time. in other words you cant have kindles or firecats in the deck at the same time, only one or the other.

what do you guys think?
