Treasure Hunter is already the name of a card. That aside, I think that the ability should have an activation cost in addition to tapping. I don't know that your treasures will really catch on, but compare it to Magus of the Unseen. For an off-colour ability, I think it needs some activation cost, even if it's just some colourless mana.

How is the ability off-color? I don't see why black shouldn't be able to steal stuff left and right. It's black. And anyway I'll refer you to Murderous Spoils.

Murderous Spoils seems very top-down to me, especially when compared to the other interactions black has with artifacts in Mirrodin block. However, if you were to have told me just the name of the card (Treasure Hunter), I'd probably assume it was black.
Black is the colour of greed and power mongering, which is right in line with the flavour of a Treasure Hunter. I'm confused still, why does he give the treasure back? You could add a sacrifice to his ability and make the control switch permanent. Make him into the treasure-hunter-willing-to-give-his-life stereotype. Or whatever.
Gild is a cool card.
[EDIT]: You could change the Treasure Hunter from a Mercenary to a Pirate too, because, as you have pointed out in the past Matt, Pirates are fucking pimp. Mercenary's cool too though...

The flavor text hints at why he gives the treasure back - if he keeps it, then he can't go out on another search. He likes stealing more than he likes owning.

As it stands now Matt, the hunter can steal a player's entire "collection" of treasure permanents over a matter of just a few turns. I think that you're going a bad route by doing this card as you're punishing players for playing treasure cards more than you're rewarding them (see also Snow-covered Land).
Back the power off on the card and it may be just fine.
