Well, it's finally over. First Type 1 tournament, first tournament in somewhere in the area of two years, actually. It was also an unlimited proxy tournament. I figure I should go there and own everyone.  And I did, for the most part.

Friday night, unlike every other Magic player, I slept for about 10 hours and woke up feeling refreshed. Not waking up with a hangover owns. I get ready and and get my friend up. After I have my trade and decks together, we are off. I pick up my friend Brad in Myrtle Creek. Then I drop off Rainbow, and I'm off to Justins house. We get some pencils which come in handy when taking notes, really. Exploding pens are not cool. After that we are off to Roseburg.

We arrive at JJ's around 12:30. I buy the last cards I need my sideboard, Mogg Salvage and Rack and Ruin. Trading and multiplayer commence. One notoriously funny moment involves a random person we were playing multiplayer with. My friend Brad played a Plains and 3 Lotus Petals first turn. This other guy freaked out and started going off about the Restricted List. however the real laugh riot was that Will, an employee, was playing Prosbloom. Yet this guy was still freaking out. I can still hear him say, "You just made yourself a target!" Intense ridicule quickly followed.

Justin and I are playing but Brad is not. Its all good, he did some heavy trading, good times. So we sign up and wait for pairings. It all starts at 2:00

Here is what I am playing:

Slave Labor

Cyberwaste- 27
4 Volcanic Island
4 Shivan Reef
4 Mishras Workshop
1 Library of Alexandria
1 Tolarian Academy
1 Ancient Tomb
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Pearl
1 Black Lotus
1 Sol Ring
1 Mana Crypt
1 Mana Vault
3 Gilded Lotus

Obsolete- 8
4 Force of Will
4 Chalice of the Void

Edgecrushers- 4
4 Goblin Welder

Slave Labor- 3
3 Mindslaver

Ascension- 15
4 Thirst for Knowledge
4 Brainstorm
1 Tinker
1 Fact or Fiction
1 Timetwister
1 Timewalk
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Wheel of Fortune
1 Memory Jar

Smasher/Devourer- 3
1 Pentavus
1 Platinum Angel
1 Memnarch

Hi -Tech Hate - 15
2 Fire/Ice
2 Triskelion
3 Mogg Salvage
3 Trinisphere
2 Red Elemental Blast
3 Blood Moon

Justin is playing U/G Madness similar to the one JP won with at Columbus.

Pairings are up. Here we go.

Round 1 - Mike Hatley with WeirdSquirrelcraft.dec

Mike decides to not sleeve up his deck till like 5 minutes before pairings go up and I have to wait for him, ARG!
He finally gets done and  says I am going to beat him, apparently his deck is completely random. A trend that would continue for the entire tournament.

Game 1 went rather fast. He mulls to 5 cards and goes first. He lays a random Mox or two and does little after that. He scoops as I start gaining steam.

Out - Timewalk, Fact or Fiction, Pentavus, Chalice of the Void, 2 Mindslaver
In - 3 Trinisphere, 3 Blood Moon

Game 2 he goes first and mulls to 6. He lays a Mox, land and a Zuran Orb.  SCARY. I play a Brainstorm and a Goblin Welder. He does little his turn. I play a Workshop, cast Memory Jar, he Force of Wills. He draws, casts something of little import and says go.  I untap weld Memory Jar into play. Sac Jar and get an Amazing hand. Cast Ancestral Recall, get 2 Gilded Loti, and a Land. Lay land cast Loti. tinker out an off color mox for a Memnarch and then discarded 2 cards. He plays another land. I untap, take his perms and he scoops.

1-0 (1-0)

Round 2 Chris Ewens with Sligh

Game 1 I go second. He draws well, while I make a mistake of saccing the Jar at the wrong time, getting only a Mox Jet out of it, and discarding ALOT of good stuff. I die to double Ghitu Encampment beatdown, as I am unable to find anything of consequence.

Out - Timewalk, 2 Gilded Loti, Fact or Fiction
In - 2 Triskelion, 2 Fire/Ice

Game 2 I get a Mindslaver out quickly and recur it a few times to really mess up his board position, burn his own Pups, mess with his Scrolls and Waste his own lands. He scoops.

Game 3 I go first turn Triskelion with the help of a Black Lotus and Workshop. Second turn I cast a Mindslaver AND a Welder. Triskelion does his thing by fucking up his Pups and Fanatics and having a good time with Welder. A Platinum Angel soon follows. He scoops.

2-1 (2-0)

Round 3- Sean Rice with Suicide Black

Before the tourney I traded Sean my awesome Beta Sinkhole, as it had seen NO play for like EVAR. Straight across for his Unlimited one. I am so awesome that way.

Game 1 Go first and play Chalice for 2, Goblin Welder Ouch. He Goes Jet, Lotus, Swamp, Phyrexian Negator. I untap cast  Thirst for Kowledge, get some Moxes, dump Pentavus, cast it again dumping a Mindslaver. Cast another Welder. He plays a land and casts a Hypnotic Specter. Attacks with Negator. He didnt realize what I could do, and a welded in Pentavus left him with a Swamp.

Sean doesn't have a SB, thus he has huge Cajones

Out - Timewalk, Fact or Fiction,  2 Gilded Loti
In - 2 Fire/Ice, 2 Triskelion

Game 2 Sean goes Swamp Duress. I go Goblin Welder, Lotus go. He Hymns me, I chuck a Force and a Tinker. He Wastes a Volcanic. I Play Workshop, Trike and say go. He gets out a Reaver and a Hippe. End of his turn I weld a Louts into play, sac it, and Thirst dumping a Platinum Angel. An untap step and welded mox later and hes scopping up his cards.

2-0 (3-0)

Round 4 - Matt Osgood with Academy

Its down to me and Matt for first and second place. Matt is a great player, so I knew I was in a for a rough ride.

Game 1 I mull to 6, (first time this tourney!) play a Welder and and some artifact mana. Doesn't matter as he goes off quickly, while I have a lonely Wleder in play. Sad Welder.

He does not side in anything.

Out - Timewalk, 3 Gilded Loti, Pentavus, Fact or Fiction, Chalice of the Void, Mindslaver
In - 2 REB, 3 Trinisphere, 3 Bloodmoon

Game 2 has me going first with a firts turn Moon with my Ruby and Sapphire out. He scoops due to mana screw.

Game 3 was that mandatory pulse poundingly long game, it was hard fought with a first turn Chalice for one and 3sphere, but it was negated as he already laid  down signifgant acceleration already.  Next turn a Blood Moon joined in the fun. Things went incredibly slow, taking 24 turns. Eventually he comboed me out. Awesome game.

1-2 (3-1)

I end up going second, and good times were had by all. I got 2 Darksteel Boosters for 2nd place. Awesome because there was no entry fee and that I pulled a Skullclamp. YES!

There were ten people at the tournament and many archetypes were present. Here is the breakdown:

4 Aggro: White Weenie, Sligh, Suicide Black
3 Combo: Academy, Prosbloom, and Squirrelcraft
1 Aggro - Control: U/G Madness
1 Workshop: Workshop Slavery
1 Scrub: Beasts!

All but Control was represented. This field is a Control players wet dream. That would have most likely swept the entire thing if piloted by a good player.

Yes a rather scrubbish metagame, but hopefully, that will change with more tournaments. The random decks really wrecked havoc on my playing skills. Chalice for one or for two next turn? It was also a pain to board, but usually the Gilded Loti and Time walk went. The random combo decks really made things hard as well. thankfully the deck just outbrokened most everything. Next time Pillar is probably going in my board.

If you are ever in the Roseburg area, come down to JJ's at the mall. Tourneys are on Saturday and Wednesday. It's a great place, with many friendly people there.

As for Workshop Slavery, the deck is resilent to mana denial due to Brainstorm and the Gilded Loti. Towards the end, the deck became a little inconsistent, but good shuffling made things like mulligans rare. Bosh would have smashed face if I faced more aggro decks, but I didn't want to add an untested card, so no results yet for him. Slavery is a difficult to play, but it is very rewarding. There is nothing like winning with a 7 cast Angel.

Mandatory props and slops:

Props:
All my opponents
Ben for having this tourney (You need to organize more T1 tournies!)
"You just made yourself a target" OMG thats the funny
Team Meandeck for being the coolest evar, and making SLAVERY

Slops:
Mike for taking a gillion years to sleeve his deck
Me for assuming Ben built a crappy Rebel deck Sad

how did siding out gilded lotuses work for you? they strike me as a fundamental part of the deck, something that you wouldn't want to side out due to consistency issues.

Sadly, not everyone has access to duals. Sui can be budgetized (no Sinkhole.).

Good job for understanding the format.  It's nice to hear t1 springing up in new areas, not to mention there was no entry fee.  how nice.

You forgot to include the following slops:
The players that decided to play WW, Sligh, and Sui at a unlimited proxy tournament.

Is this really the best way to go vs. Academy?:

"Out - Timewalk, 3 Gilded Loti, Pentavus, Fact or Fiction, Chalice of the Void, Mindslaver
In - 2 REB, 3 Trinisphere, 3 Bloodmoon "

How can you give no props to meandeck, who built your deck - including the newest tech Mogg Salvage.

Mogg Salvage isn't really new, seeing as it was in my January report as a three-of. You just have to pay attention to the artifact removal tech Sligh players give out. :P

Next up: [card]Crash[/card]. [card]Pulverize[/card] (Well, probably not Pulverize...)

Congrats on the high finish, Blackest Lotus.

lol...Steve, Meandeck obviously didnt build his deck..he runs MD Plat while you guys dropped that. Wink

I'm also really confused as to how you can side out the Gilded Loti...granted you were playing in a field containing WW, Sui, and Sligh, but these are incredibly important to your mana base development, which is incredibly important to pwning your opponent.

YOU WIN TEH PRIZE! Naming a deck and its contents after Fear Factory songs is much cooler than say....naming it after a crappy pop song.  Very Happy

Now on to something with content.

To sum it all up, I'm not sure. Looking back, I think I should have kept all the Slavers in and taken out the FATTIES. The chalice was going to stay but his deck was random and I had no idea WTF he was playing; during those 3 games I saw ABSOLUTLEY ZERO Dark Rituals, Necropotence, or anything Storm- based at all.

I dont think Chalice was effective at all during that matchup. The lack of knowledge as to what he was playing, which made for some misplays, is what I contribute to my second place finish. I have not tested the deck against combo, much less Academy of all things, so I was unsure of how to board properly. The Gilded Loti are important, but I figured in a matchup where speed is essential, they should be sided out. I was thinking outside of the box. when I sided them out, mana was never a problem. I also think a pair of Mox Monkeys in the board would also be good in such a combo rife environment.

You see the thing is, I live in an area where people believe that Type One is a first turn kill format, and combo dominates all, and somehow decks like Sui and WW can compete. I can't get it through to them that Academy is dead and has been replaced by Storm based combo or DRAGON. Oh yeah and Morphling is still the best creature Confused I have much work to do.

What do you mean? Everytime I cast a 4/5 beater, I growled "SMEMNARCH!" THAT's respect. Very Happy

Seriously, though, that was an oversight, my bad. Although there are a few differences, the maindeck angel and my constantly changing draw spell, that is sometimes Windfall and sometimes FoF and might become a Bosh. Either way, edited.

On Mogg Salvage, I never used it the entire day, there were few good targets. Might be replaced by Pillars.
