I live in Tampa and there is only one weekly Type 1 tournement. It is free and the winner gets 3 packs. Power Nine is banned. 5 Proxies are allowed. Where are all the Type 1 players at? Is there anything at all going on in Orlando? How about Miami? Jax?

Florida Players!! Let me know what its like in your area.

Magic was huge here back in the day, but now it seems to be big in Maine and other strange places.

LET ME KNOW IM NOT ALONE!

I would also like to know about the Florida scene as I might go down there to Full Sail for Game Design and Development.

Strange Type 1 bastardization. Why do they even bother? I'd rather just play Type 1.5 than this.

If you are allowing proxies, why ban the Power 9? If it is because some have all the power and want to level the field, then just allow 10 proxies.

Would be interested in learning the thought/reasons behind this if you know.

the reasoning behind it is that the shop owner feels that everybody should be on the same playing field and that ïts supposed to be a fun game that everyone can compete in. her logic is flawed as there are many other cards to abuse. in fact, even though i have a full set of power, i think id have a much better chance of walking out in the top spot under these rules.

I live in orlando and le tme tell you, the T1 here is horrid. Basically it's me and some of my friends.  Truthfully, that's about it.

Jose's is a good place to go to get the cards, as many people are knowledgable about it, but you won't get much play unless one of us is there.

We want to start up a tournament, but not enough people have T1 decks/cards to make it worth anything.  Too many people like T2/Limited too much.

The only way I could get a T1 tourney going was to make it unlimited proxies, so that more than a few people would show up (plus, it's hard for me to get the cards without either shelling out for overpriced cards, because nobody has them).

heh, sup Zeke. Told you i'm on every forum basically lol.

But yeah, there's a few small T1 tourneys in the northern part of Florida, like Gainesville and up, but nothing really below that.

It would be nice to start up a regular T1 tournament in the central florida area, but i'm not sure if we could get enough people, or even a decent place to hold it secured.

If any of you guys in the Central Florida area are interested, we could possibly get together and work on starting one.

I am in central Florida also.  I live in Kissimmee and there is no T1 in the area.  The closest place I have seen is Tampa, and that is a long drive.

You could count me as a regular if someone could get a once a month tournament going somewhere in the greater Orlando area.  Or drop me a line if you guys just want to try getting a few games together sometime.

I see a few other people on here pretty much in the same boat as me; we want to play T1 but we are all just waiting around for someone to get it going.  Maybe we just need to force the issue.  I'm going to be at the Fifth Dawn Prerelease in a couple of weeks, us T1 players should get together there and see if we can get a core group togeher and a store that is willing to play host.  That's all we really need to get started.

Like I said, drop me an email if your interested.

I'll probably be at the pre-release too, so that could work.

I will be at the prerelease as well, along with most of the friends i was talking about in my previous post.  We should try to meet up somewhere, or do something to try to get us all together at the prerelease.

Jose, if we talk to him at the prerelease (if he is there) might allow us to start something up, but his place is packed on the weekends most of the time, so i don't know when it would be.  The only other store i know of in orlando is Sci-Fi city, who has wanted to get into the magic-tournament scene for some time now, and it would probably have to be on a sunday or a weekday, but we'll just have to see.

I thought Sci-Fi didn't want to be heavily involved with Magic anymore. They used to deal alot with it but now they just hold Extended tournaments on Saturdays. They just sells packs and boxes now. It's still worth a shot though, and I wouldn't mind, Sci-Fi is closer to my house than The Gathering.

Another place that is around is Coliseum of Comics.  They have four locations around the city.  I know most of the people at the Kissimmee store and I'm sure they would let us have a weekday if we wanted it.  I'm sure they could swing it at the other locations too.

Actually that will probably be the case everywhere.  I imagine most places are pretty booked on the weekends, but if we wanted to run an event on a Tuesday night or something we could find a place relatively easily.

One other thing that needs to be considered is finding someone to judge an event.  I don’t know if anyone has given thought to this.

I am not a big time player and I only have a small collection, but the way things are now I hardly ever play.  The last event I went to was the Mirrodin prerelease.  I just don’t get that big of a kick out of T2.  I would really like to see something get going with vintage in the area.  I’m willing to commit to coming ever time if we could get a monthly T1 event started.  If seven other people make the same commitment, then we would have enough of a core group to make things happen.

I certainly would like to get together at the prerelease.  We could talk about this some more, kick around some ideas, and get a few games in.  I will probably be coming alone so if anyone wants to meet up with me they can email me and I’ll give you my phone number.  That way we can work it out.  I really thing that we find eight T1 players in this town who are willing to do what it takes to get a regular game established.

About the judging thing:
Yeah, that is a concern, and I doubt any of us are judge certified, so we'll have to find someone. It's possible the store we end up getting to host the tournament has an employee who is certified, but we can't bank on it.

This has somewhat of a relation to the judging thing:
If we get this going, we have to ultimatly decide on one thing, proxies or no, and if yes, how many. If we have any number of proxies, we can't have the tournament sanctioned. But at the same time, if we don't allow proxies, we run the risk of a smaller turnout and an overall very weak metagame.
Personally i think we can go with an unlimited proxy tournament, and hopefully get whatever store we have to offer some type of chase T1 card that will attract people. Not necessarily a P9 component because most stores would consider that too high of a risk for a first time tournament, but something to atleast attract players of all levels. This would probably raise the entrance fee a little bit more than people are accustomed to, but if the prize or prize structure is eye catching enough, it's not a problem.

Any other suggestions?

Id like to help you guys out, but its not practical for me to travel from tampa to orlando very often. If theres anything i can help you out with, let me know.  I may go to the 5th dawn pre-release.

An Idea: 5 Proxies allowed, but every time you win during a "season", your number of proxies allowed goes down by 1. Im glad to see you are so motivated to get something going.

Another thought could be a store credit prize structure. An example for an 8 player $10 entry fee could be store credit to the top 4.
4th $10
3rd $15
2nd $20
1st $35

Total entry fee becomes the prize pool in store credit. This way the top players win something, the store gains, and it is highly flexible. The hosting store never loses and would be attractive in the beginning for a store to try it out.

It’s important to talk about everything of course, but some of this is really too soon.  At this point I feel like we need to find a core group of players, a judge, and a location.  If all three are reliable the rest will take care of itself.  What I mean is that if we can get eight dedicated players who will show up nearly every month, the exact specifications will not be too important.  We can try a variety of things and just go with whatever brings in the most people.

For me personally, I prefer a cheaper entry fee to encourage more people to play.  I really do not care one way or the other on proxies.  I do not have any power and most likely will not be buying it anytime soon.  If we play proxies I’ll use them, if not I’ll make a budget deck work.

Also, I am not a certified judge but I follow the game pretty closely and I judged quite a bit back in the old days.  If push came to shove I could be drafted to service, maybe on some kind of rotating basis.  But I would much rather play.

Anyway I hope to meet some of you guys next weekend.

In my opinion, we won't need a judge if we aren't trying to get this sanctioned or anything.  If this is just a casual tournament that offers prizes and what-not...then the importance is players and location.  judge can just be thrown in as an added goody.

Since it IS type 1, most of us will know the rules and what not.  And if all else fails, my friend has the newest version of the comprehensive rulebook that he prints out after the release of each new set, so that can be used as reference.

And in times of conflict, I think a simple majority-ruling could be applied.  I personally owuld like a nice, casual environment, it takes away from the hecktic-ness that is like the T2 events.

As for prices, we can start with something small, like cash in = T4-T8 prize pool, and once we get a nice, semi-dedicated following and the group gets bigger, we can start bringing in nicer prizes, judges, etc.

That's just my opinion on the matter, though.

1) I believe you can become certified as a DCI judge at the Fifth Dawn Prerelease.

2) Full Sail, generally, is crap.  The program is fine, but they seem unable to place graduates.

3) There are no Type 1 tournaments in Gainesville, to my knowledge.

4) Uh, The Gathering Place is The Gathering Place.  It's a bit too clique-oriented for my tastes.

5) If you want to play your power cards, people will be playing 5-Color at the prerelease.  You know you want to.

If i had power cards I would be playing them, especially in 5-color.

Until then, I'll have to stick with my 100-card highlander deck for huge-deck funness.

Success!

www.coolstuffinc.com has opened a store in central florida, on Aloma Blvd in Orlando.

There is a guy there interested in starting up 10-proxy T1 tournaments.

There is also a pretty good staff there, and a couple guys who got me started in on the wonderful world of 250!

All T1 players in the orlando area now have a haven!  Tuesdays, fridays, saturdays, and sundays you can usually find an abundance of magic players, and any other day somebody may be there, and if all else fails the staff may whip out some decks.

www.coolstuffgames.com for more info!

I'm working on getting a job there, so if I do you can bet I'll be pushing for more T1 stuff.
