I was browsing through my collection looking for possible finishers for blue that are faster and cheaper than morphling without requiring a splash and I ran across this...
[card]Serendib Djinn[/card] 2UU Flying At the beginning of your upkeep, sacrifice a land. If you sacrifice an island this way, Serendib Djinn deals 3 damage to you. When you control no islands, sacrifice Serendib Djinn. 5/6
I know that the draw back seems bad inititally. But with initial testing, this card proved very effective in fish against good aggro decks (TnT, Madness etc.)
Note, in my fish version, the only islands are 3 Volcanic Islands and 2 basic islands. The rest are fetches or nonbasics.
Virtually everytime I played this card against aggro in my fish deck, it swung the game in my favor.
I can typically delay aggro for a few turns with dazes, standstill, FoW and hatchlings. The probably always came once the decks finally manage to play a big threat or two out. I have virtually no possible blockers and no way to finish the game and am low on cards.
And I found that I never needed more than 3 lands for the deck to function well. But thanks to fish's slow game, by the time I cast this, I often had an extra three or four land in play.
This guys rarely failed to be a two turn clock while the remainder of my creatures could stay behing to block to deter attackers.
In addition, I've never had to sacrifice an island. I often had a couple of fetches that I hadn't sacced or other lands I wasn't using in play by then that I could sac.
It even helped against control acting to really put pressure on the opponent as long as I saved a bit of countermagic to help resolve this.
Against combo, I often side it out for more null rods and stifles.
