My friends and I are new to Type 1, but we are willing to spend money on a competative decks. Recently I have been searching on Ebay.com to maybe find the least expensive prices for Power, but there are many versions of the Power 9. Specifically I am startled by the collector's edition cards marked CE on the link to the bids. These cards tend to be $200 cheaper, but are they playable? Or are they unplayable since they have golden borders and are square. The picture is shown below.

Collectors edition cards cannot be played in sanctioned DCI events.... Hence the reason they are some 200 dollar tournaments.

In my opinion, they are overpriced as is.  They are really just overpriced proxies.  ALthough, i have heard of some store TO's allowing them.

Save your money.  Don't buy CE cards.  Buy the real thing.

Thanks for helping me! You saved me $50. I hope this is not locked because other newbies like me might not know that these cards are unplayable. We could save peoples money this way if people just read what you wrote.

if you want to pick up cheap p9, i reccomend going to grand prix's, pro-tours and ptq's and ask around.  i've found atleast 4 pieces of power (beta, all real, one played) for cheap prices.  infact, i'm not sure if i could get in touch with the guy i bought mine from (i don't hvae them anymore, i sold them :\ ), but i know he had a few he was looking to sell to me for roughly the same price.

that's usually the most trusted place to find p9, from someone at an event (where you can see the card in person, and inspect it) or from someone on here.  i think samite healer has some extra, i'm not sure.  i also heard that carl has an extra jet or pearl or something.

Thanks for the advice, the only problem is that going to one of these events is troublesome, especially if im not going to be playing a good deck. But that is the best idea, I won't get jipped. Thanks again.

You can go just to trade/buy. That's what I do at all the bostons PTs and PTQs that I go to.

Carl's definately got an extra pearl he won at Waterbury a few months ago. It is definately for sale as of last I heard. That was when we were playing bomberman and magic about a week ago. I'll have to ask him the price cause it seems he rarely comes around these parts of the mana drain these days.

you can probably slip in one or two beat up CEs, if you cut the corners. But the question is, is that honorable, and would the other douches ask you to de-sleeve to reveal if your beta power is in fact, beta power.

Don't even talk about that. T1 players allow proxies, but trying to dupe other people into thinking that yours are real is really dishonorable. Get the real thing if you're going to spend the money.

I would.

When a bunch of us were thinking about going to Gencon last summer (wound up not going  Crying or Very sad ) I told them that for every Beta power card I saw, I would ask to see the back.

In local store tournaments I don't bother though.

Yea, just go to events to trade/sell.  My friend made about $2,000 at Regionals this past year and he didn't even play.

What's the general concensus on using CE stupid crap, like D-Tutor?  I'm under the impression people won't care as long as you can prove you the card printed in a legal set, but I suppose it could tilt a little either way.

CE is junk and they shouldn't be used. Even on cards such as D-Tutor your dissing the guy that put in the work and money to pimp out his deck and buy the REAL beta cards.
The only use I see is to make play testing decks, and its much cheaper to use a printer for that.

i would never drop a player from one of my tournaments for using a CE card as a placeholder for a cheap card, like lightning bolts and demonic tutors. the odds of them actually not owning a non-CE one are slim to nil.

Then why aren't they using it?
