Turgid Spirit
{2}{U}
Creature -- Spirit

Whenever ~this~ is dealt damage by a green source, tap it and it doesn't untap during its controller's next untap step.

2/3

***

While this creature's brother, Frozen Spirit, is designed to die to any red attack, I want this to stand a chance of surviving, since its penalty involves it remaining tapped and such. It isn't much of a penalty if the creature's always dead anyhow.

I'm pretty sure that I have the cost more-or-less right. I'm not entirely sure about the P/T, though. Compared to something like Metathran Elite, this seems pretty bad. Even compared to Cloud Spirit, this seems to be more drawback than anything. The penalty on this isn't extremely dangerous, but it still seems a little bit weak. Increasing the power is almost certainly out of the question, but increasing the toughness doesn't really seem useful. Should I just bite my tongue and make this a 2/2 for {1}{U} like the other one?

Did you know that Red is the color or art and music and passion? Combine that with Green, the color of nature, spiritualism, and community and you get a hippie commune of drum circles, dreamcatchers, and recreational drug use. Let's see that win a Pro Tour.

Current Wording:

Turgid Spirit
{2}{U}
Creature -- Spirit

Whenever ~this~ blocks or is blocked by a green creature, tap ~this~ at the end of combat and it doesn't untap during your next untap step.

As long as ~this~ is untapped, it has protection from green.

2/3

No, don't make it an exact mirror. Those are usually boring.

Do spirits usually fly these days? I know they haven't always but I'm not really familiar with any non-flying spirits since Mirage block.

All of the Legions Muses were spirits and some of them didn't fly. All of the Phantom creatures from Judgement were spirits and many of them didn't fly. Nether Spirit from Mercadian Masques didn't fly. Darkling Stalker, Furnace Spirit, and Mindwarper didn't fly.

In conclusion, there are many spirits that do not fly.

Green doesn't do damage the way red does. Is there some other way to make that disadvantage work?

Just an idea: "Whenever Turgid Spirit becomes the target of a green spell or effect, tap it." Would be clean, and would be different. Also, you should strongly consider to give your critter Flying. It's not really a spoiler now and still wouldn't be strictly better than [Card]Wind Drake[/Card], if it did. I also believe that most blue spirits in Magic history had Flying. (Not Dreamborn Muse, but the rest.^^)

I don't like the green spell or effect idea. Supposing that the opponent does want to take advantage of this thing's weakness, he's going to have to divert one of his spells or abilities in its direction. Most of green's spells serve to benefit green's creatures, which means that it wouldn't be nearly as much of a penalty for the blue player as it should be.

As for giving it flying, I already listed a lot of spirits from recent (and not-so-recent) sets that did not have flying. There is no rule that says that spirits must have flying.

If I stick with the idea of the creature blocking/being blocked by, in many ways that's considerably weaker than the penalty of Frozen Spirit against red. This is also a bigger creature to boot. Should I also include that if it's blocking/blocked by a green creature, it deals no combat damage?

But Frozen Spirit is much stronger on a P/T for CC basis. It's fine for this to have less of a weakness. Actually, a 2/3 for 2U isn't very good even without the small drawback. What about giving it some small ability or making it 2/4?

How's something like this:

Whenever ~this~ blocks or is blocked by a green creature, tap ~this~ at the end of combat and it doesn't untap during your next untap step.

As long as ~this~ is untapped, it has protection from green.

***

That way, if you have reserved this as a blocker, it can block any sized green creature and survive, but will then be tapped down for a turn. If it attacks, it loses protection and can be blocked, so its penalty may come into play then, as well.
