Tranquil Evil
{3}{B}
Creature -- Horror Druid

{2}{B}{G}: Destroy all enchantments. Put a +1/+1 counter on ~this~ for each enchantment destroyed this way.

2/2

SpiritDeed's card was all over the place, but Sammy (on #tmd) had a really cool idea for what Tranquil Evil should do. It takes the very black concept of feeding off others and combines with the green idea behind Tranquility (enchantment destruction.) If necessary I can add green to the casting cost as well, since black does not traditionally deal with enchantments. However, there is a precedent for a card of this sort in Quagmire Druid.

I added some flavour text. Continue with your worship.

Does the card really need to cost as much as it does?  It seems as though it is overpriced for what it does.  Are there really enough played enchantments out there to make this cost 4 mana to play.  I feel it could be 3 to cast.  Maybe 1GB would make an ok casting cost.  Or switch the casting cost to 3G.  Green deals with both counters on creatures and enchantments so it seems better if the base cost of the card was reen instead of black.

If you like that text, how about a slight revision:

It exudes a serenity so deep that its victims slide from slumber into death.

Unfortunately, that doesn't really connect with the mechanic at all.

I like that flavour text more, indeed! As far as the flavour goes, I've actually always wondered what tranquility had to do with the destruction of enchantments. Enchantments don't seem all that wild to me.

However, you're right that neither flavour text connects with the destruction of enchantments. If somebody could make the above connection for me, I might be able to come up with something a little more themely.

Well, I was thinking you might be able to connect the deep serenity with the enchantments just melting away--that the magic couldn't stay warped and forced into unnatural patterns in the face of such harmony.

It exudes a serenity so deep that all foreign magics relax their grip on [the fabric of (?)] reality.

In it's wake lies death, in it's sight lies a blank canvas.

Death = creatures it will run over
blank canvas= lack of enchantments

I think you should add green to the casting cost as well, 2GB or 1GB and make it a 2/1 or 1/2, if you make it 1GB because 3 for a 2/2 that has the potention to grow that fast is a big to good IMO. Just seems like to much of a green ability to have just the activation have green in it.

I'll make it {2}{B}{G}, but I'm going to leave it as a 2/2. The general consensus that enchantments aren't much good means that creature's ability is hardly ever going to be of any great impact. I doubt he's ever going to grow much larger than 5/5 and that will require an 8-mana investment. If he's maindecked, which is likely in a casual environment, he's not going to grow at all a lot of the time. A 2/2 creature for {2}{B}{G} is already pushing unplayable, even for a casual player.

I like "foreign magics", but "relax their grip" sounds awkward.

It is a bit awkward, but I wanted the play on words of the horror's serenity causing foreign magics to relax. It's still a difficult concept to convey.

It exudes a serenity so deep that all foreign magics...

...unravel.

...slip from reality into oblivion.

It's a slightly different wording than previously suggested, but it rolls off the tongue so much more smoothly.

Frankly, this seems overcosted by a bunch. Eight (gold!) mana for a creature that in all liklihood will be about 4/4 is terrible.

Yeah, this could easily be 3 and 3--possibly even 3 and 2.

The high cost is not for the size of the creature, but for the fact that it's recurring enchantment destruction. The only other creature I can think of that sticks around to destroy enchantments turn after turn is Devout Witness. While this isn't necessarily a large combat creature, it does have the capacity to become large and it's also enchantment destruction that's readily available to black (even if it does require a green splash.) I suppose I could make it somewhat cheaper. Really, I don't mind making it cheap to cast as long as the enchantment destruction effect is a bit more costly. Would you mind a casting cost of {B}{G} and leaving the ability cost the same?

[card]Tranquil Grove[/card]. This is a creature, but that also makes it easier to kill. BG with an activation cost of 2BG is probably fine, though.
