Lions Eye Diamond

If I have a Lion's Eye Diamond in play, and a 3cc card in my hand, can i play the card using the mana from the Diamond, (announce it, then use the Diamond's ability), or am I not able to because i need to pay costs before anouncing the card.

I believe that you used to be able to do this. However, Lion's Eye Diamond has since been errata'd to read "Play this ability only any time you could play an instant." That means that it can't be used as a mana source to pay for a spell in your hand. Either that spell has already been discarded or you haven't paid the mana to put it on the stack yet.

Do note that LED still can't be stifled. It's still a mana ability, but you can only play it when you could play an instant.
This sounds weird, but it's to prevent people from casting a spell off it (in the way you are asking about).
