Because I read that an artifact was needed for the TMD set (or is this gap already filled?) I tried to think of something. This is what I came up with:
Mindless Tome
3
Artifact
Mindless Tome comes into play with three charge counters on it.
1, Discard a card from your hand: Put a charge counter on Mindless Tome.
Remove two charge counters from Mindless Tome: Draw a card.
Yes, this is Mindless Automaton, but not as a creature. That makes it worse. But it's cheaper. That makes it better. In the end, you probably pay 4 to draw two cards and discard one, like with Catalog. But you retain the meager possibility to pay 2 and discard two cards to draw one.
So the card sucks. But also, in a way, it doesn't.

Well, discard two to draw two is what this does, only this gives you 1,5 cards ahead. Basically, this thing is a catalog and then a 2-for-1 trader.
Is it justified to exist next to Alfred's recent card? I think so, since lots of cards are alike.
I don't want to remove the mana cost from activation, because then you give away a catalog for 3, whereas the original costs 2U. 3 is less, and not each color should be able to blablabla usual artifacts should be restrained litany.
So is it alrighty?

Erm, yeah. The activation cost needs to stay. It looks OK, I'd say. I've applied good ol'resource point theory on this (as you can really only use it for card drawers) and the verdict is:
- when used as a one-show draw for two cards (on the turn you play it) it nets you minus 4 RP.
- when used as a one-shot draw for one card (on the turn you play it) it nets you minus 3 RP.
- when used as a tome (one draw per turn, on whatever turn you want after you've played it, thus ignoring the casting cost) it nets you minus 2 RP (whereas, say, Jayemdae Tome would even out at 0).
On the up side, this filters and enables madness. Can't we cost this at 4 like all tomes just to be on the safe side?
Oh, Stijn: you happen to know a girl called Ellen who used to reside in that freaky monastery in Nijmegen where you also live(d)?

4 mana for a book that can't even get you a head / ahead on cards? Then the activation cost should become zero. Because even with a Squee, it becomes just a looter every turn. And just only with two Squee's, it's drawing you one card each turn (taking up three others to initialise it).
I say three mana, because, well, it's a bad card. I really don't feel that there's a need to get on the safe site for this card.
And yes, Ellen lived in my monestary. In exactly the same room. With the same couch. It still has her stains on it.
Warhammer paint stains of course. What did you think?

Anyway, she told me you taught her The Game (and I think she even mentioned you donating her a black deck or something). Well, it's a step in the right direction from playing with miniature orks all day  She works in a Games Workshop in Eindhoven now which is pwn3d by Erwin who if I'm not mistaken is her boyfriend. Drop in some time  4 mana for a book that can't even get you a head / ahead on cards? Then the activation cost should become zero. Aaargh! No zero cost card drawing! Evil filter tech detector is beeping! I suggested 4 because at 3, this is actually a decent card (for filtering purposes; not card advantage). You said you wanted this to fill one of the common slots for our set, right? Then let's do the right thing and make it crappy. |

Yes, they are.
For three mana and one activation, this still costs four, and then two for every card thereafter. Jalum Tome costs the same, but needs you to discard a card less. On the other hand, it taps. This doesn't. I would tap something for a card...
Shall we then just make this uncommon? Like Geth's Grimoire?
