Ok so this is how this bad boy went.  I arrive to the scene about an hour before it's scheduled to start, so I have time to make a deck registration and relax before it starts.  I start to notice not alot of people showed up (come on guys, you went to the lotus tourney instead, lame).  At least the hadley guys arrive, and there ends up being only 18 people in all, alot of familiar faces.  maybe 1 or 2 scrubs out of all 18.

After some guy takes 45 minutes on his deck registration, it finally begins at about 12:30 and the pairings go up.

Round 1: Bill w/Random.dec

Ok so I said there were about 1-2 scrubs, Bill is one of them, but he is a really nice guy, and i've played with him in the past. So I knew what to expect.

Game 1: I don't remember much about this, I think I tinkered in a sundering titan killing off his lands, which he then intuitioned for 3 scepters (when I have welder on the board) and imprinted counterspell, I won that game.

Game 2: The game pretty much went exactly like the last game, easy win, I never saw a threat the whole game Sad

1-0: 2-0

Round 2: Chris K w/ staff mud with draw

Game 1: I play a turn 1 crucible, he plays a turn 1 metalworker, I can't get it off the board, he reveals enough mana to cast titan, I lose the game easily.

Game 2: I mulligan down to five and get something like: Workshop, Mox, Mox, Gilded Lotus, Memnarch.  I cast a second turn memnarch, start stealing his mana and go on to win.

Game 3:  Now it's his turn to mulligan down to 5.  I keep an ok hand, It had a couple of lands, recall and welder, but he's playing first, he drops crypt, land, wheel, I draw 1 land, and it's glimmervoid with no artifacts, I am never even in this game.

1-1: 3-2

Round 3: Eathan w/ Back To Basics Tog.

Game 1: I go broken and cast double welder, and thirst on turn 1 discarding juggernaut.  A few turns past and he gets deed out.  He blows for 4 sweeping my board, I respond by fact or fiction and get tinker.  I tinker in titan and win.

Game 2: Not to discredit him at all but I didn't draw 1 colored mana source the entire game, and ended with a hand of REB, welder, welder, recall, thirst.

Game 3: I don't remember much about this game, I know I won easily.

2-1: 5-3

Round 4: Brian Phelon w/ Suicide GAT

Game 1: I do something, It wasn't important, because on his turn he timewalks and lays mox, mox, land, tinker for darksteel, I find a welder 1 turn too late and lose.

Game 2: I keep an amazing hand.  Workshop, mana crypt, trinisphere, trinisphere, sundering titan, sundering titan, tolarian academy.  I play turn 1 crypt, trini, it resolves.  He plays a fetch and passes the turn.  I play another trinisphere and tolarian and pass back, he plays yet another fetch and passes again.  I hardcast titan.  No lands are lost.  On his turn he goes stripmine, energy flux... Crying or Very sad On my turn I pay to keep titan, a trini, and a crypt alive, and swing for 7, I pass back to him and he plays Nullrod, and strips my tolarian. WTF, I lose everything, topdeck a trisk, he annuls it, I lose.  He sided in 6 cards against me and saw 5.

2-2: 5-4

Round 5: Ray Roballiard (I hope I spelled that correctly) w/ 2 land belcher.

So I was going into this round knowing that if I won i'd make it in, just to add pressure to the situation.  Earlier in the day ray had one of the most amazing topdecks EVAR, so I was a little nervous.

Game 1: Ray wins the roll, then mulligans to five.  His first turn was..............go.  He eventually gets a land out, I waste it and tinker in trinisphere, ray scoops

Game 2: Ray mulligans to six now.   He plays a turn 1 land grant showing me his hand, I smile as you can't really do much THAT turn.  On my turn I play mana crypt, mana vault, workshop, trinisphere, he responds by casting spoils of the vault, naming ESG, Ray takes 19 damage to find his spirit guide, and I cast a turn 1 juggernaut to go along with the trinisphere.

3-2: 7-4

So I get into the top 8

Top 8: Purple Hat w/ Dragon.

Me and hale have had our share of good games in the past, and I knew these games were going to be interesting.

Game 1: I play turn 1 workshop, lotus, mox, mox, Titan.  I knock him down to six life, before he combo's out on me.

Game 2: I mulligan to six, I had a pretty good hand, but too slow against dragon.  I keep a turn 1 tormod's crypt and mana pretty much.  I eventually cast platinum angel and there isn't much he can really do about it.  We're going to game 3.

Game 3: I mulligan to six yet again, I hate throwing away workshop hands, but it had nothing useful against dragon.  on my first turn I cast tormod's crypt, trinisphere.  I sit on that for the longest time before I finally find a juggy.  Hale ends the game being 1 mana short from comboing me out and juggy takes me to victory.

Top 4: Dave Mazza w/ modified slavery.

I recognize dave from the earlier dual mox tournament when he control magic'd my darksteel colossus.  So I was teasing with him the whole day about control magic.  He then tells me he now maindecks 4 control magics and 3 flametounge kavu's.  I'm a little nervous about this, those cards house me.

Game 1: I don't really do much besides play a welder that gets stolen away by control magic, he then tinkers in memnarch and owns the crap out of me.

Game 2: I mulligan and my hand is nothing but mana, but I decide to keep it.  I play a turn 1 gilded lotus, I eventually top deck Ancestral, drawing... hmmm.... sol ring, mox, and tolarian.... yay more mana.  Right after I do that he tinkers in memnarch again! YES i'm so happy now.  I have no cards in hand, but going into my 4th turn I already had 21 mana open.  I topdeck... what else? Tinker.  I resolve a tinker and start to look through my library... what should I do, his welder is tapped and memnarch is on the board and will start stealing things soon. He tells me I have to go for duplicant, I chose to go for jar.  I break jar that turn.  I didn't really get anything special, the only important cards were crucible, strip mine, trinisphere and trisk.  I cast trinisphere, then crucible, strip his basic island, and then play trisk killing the welder.  I now get him in strip lock and he cannot reach 4 mana to steal with memnarch and I pull it out of nowhere.

Game 3:  It went pretty well for a short time for me, I double wasted actually mana screwing him, but he topdecks tolarian academy with 3 moxen out.  I cast welder, he casts duplicant.  On my turn I cast memnarch, and steal his duplicant all on one turn.  He of course on his turn, stole away memnarch with control magic yet again.  I cannot recover, I LOSE.

now the only interesting part of this whole story, and why the title of the report is what it is.  Because on the ride home, we took the deck reg sheets, and we were reading daves list.  He has 4 control magics listed in his sideboard along with some other things that were in his main when he played me.  I had already left and didn't realize this until after.  It goes to find out he had two deck reg sheets ready and handed in the wrong one, not intentionally cheating in any way.  I apologize if I made it sound like he purposely cheated to beat me, it was all accidental.

Here is a list of what I ran.

Mana: 29
7 SoLoMoxen
3 Gilded Lotus
1 Mana Crypt
1 Mana vault
3 Shivan Reef
2 Volcanic Islands
1 Glimmervoid
1 City of brass
4 Mishra's Workshops
5 Strips
1 Tolarian Academy

Fatties: 9
3 Juggernaut
3 Sundering Titan
1 Razormane Masticore
1 Triskelion
1 Duplicant

Brokeness: 15
4 Thirst for knowledge
4 Joblin Welders
1 Tinker
1 Memory Jar
1 Wheel of Fortune
1 Windfall
1 Fact or Fiction
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Timewalk

The Hotness: 7
4 Trinisphere
3 Crucible Of Worlds

Props: Everyone who went there is really cool, and playing the top 4 in mcdonalds due to getting kicked out of the community center, I LOVED THIS.  Pizza.

Slops: accidental cheating, 18 people was totally unexpected, this could have been really awesome if more people had showed up.

I didn't love this.

Not only was the prize support half of what was stated,
but the hall was only available until 7.
If he'd gotten the tournout that was expected,
there would have been another round,
and the entire top eight would have been played off site.
The only reason we weren't kicked out of the McDonald's
is that Monday is the manager's last day, and he just didn't care.

Long Deck Registration Kid (sorry dude I forgot your name) w/ Back To Basics Tog.

Names ethan and let me reitarate just for those who arent already saying wtf
dont play that deck unless the whole meta is 4cc first and then fish and thats it. Workshop Pwons. Unfourtunatly it looks like if you dont play workshops and welders you are at a disadvantage so pack up those drains and take out those carzy artifacts and have fun going broken stuff go and then being countered by broken stuff go.

Got to go with Dan on this. Terry needs to be alittle more organized and needs to give out the prizes promised. The reaseon why people went to terries shindig instead of Stokes is cause nobody likes stoke except that leather asshole and terry was giving away 2 moxen when that turns in to one Stokes would of just been flat out better.

For those still reading remember hulk is dead and I shold win the prize for most incourearnt threads.

Thats all folks

Nice report,
I will be interested to see what some of the decklists looked like especially post GenCon. It will be interesting to see if there is a visable metagame shift or not, but with the inception of mono-blue i really doubt there will be, or at least till decks are optimized a bit.

Mcdonalds! wow thats a new one... I wonder if they had 1 of those little playcenters or if there were little kids haning around who might touch/eat cards or read cards out of your hand in a final match not knowing any better then to just keep quiet.

Only 18 people is dissapointing. Hopfully i will be able to make the next 1, because when i heard massachusetts (living in connecticut) i was like wow that shouldnt be to far away. I mapquest and its 120 miles away. Good job getting 3rd however.

Back in the day we in Binghamton used to finish up tourneys at McDonalds.  McDonalds tournies are hardcore.

Sorry to hear you got screwed out of a mox though dude, that really sucks.  I wish you had posted a list with your report though.  I hate having to go to another thread to look at decklists :\

I added my decklist to this thread to make it much easier, your right carl.

And also, yes McDonalds was a hardcore area, apparently everyone hated it, I didn't find it to be all that bad, it was actually kind of funny.

EDIT: I have a question for any user that happens to be a judge, If someone hands in a deck registration sheet that is completely wrong, what is the penalty? just curious.

I'm thinking this was intentional cheating since he did tell me he had 4 control magics main. What can ya do?

I played him first round of finals as well and i think i saw a control magic first game as well

I suppose u consider me the 2nd scrub...EH????

I agree u did get screwed so I looked into the matter and came up with these new rulings as of August 19, 2004:

-A match loss is now given as a penalty for errors in a decklist.

-Decklist penalties should generally be given at the start of the round after which they were found, to avoid one penalty having more weight than another.

-However, if a decklist error is discovered during play (rather than through reviewing a decklist), the penalty should be applied immediately.

-Similarly, a situation brought to the attention of the judge during a round should generally result in a penalty being applied immediately, if possible.

Also to make sure i got the correct rulings (even though i got them off wizards.com) I went to the closest judge located in Lenox, MA (DONT EVER TRUST HIM). I believe he is a level 3 judge and he agreed with these current rulings.

So basically u did get screwed outta a mox. Im not sure if u stayed long enough but the final decision for prizes was a friend of the two agreed to buy the ruby and abyss and split the money between the two.

And no matter what people say with or without a good sb, I believe U/R Fish loses against alot of decks nowadays

btw:I played fish at this tourney

edit:According to these rulings though there wasnt really anything u could do if ur gonna follow DCI floor rules

I personally talked to Dave and he confirmed the fact that he did in fact have multiple deck reg forms and turned in the wrong one.  There were many witnesses to this including CtThespian who told Dave to take out the Intuition/Accum engine originally in the first version of the deck...and then who commented on the aggro heavy field which resulted in the last version of a deck reg form that was supposed to be handed in, displaying Flametongue Kavu's and Control Magic's in the main deck.

Additionally, as Dave's top eight opponent, Crossman, pointed out...people saw those cards game one in multiple matches.  Dan Richardson(Pernicious Dude), had both of his Gorilla Shamans FTKed away in a game one.  Jeff Greene had a Juggernaut stolen by a Control Magic in a game one.  Even Ethan will confirm seeing those cards game one.

Does this make what Dave did okay.  Absolutely not.  By the letter of the law, he was not within the rules, and if it was caught he should have received the appropriate penalty(match loss).  However, what I want to clear up is that there was no ill intent on Dave's part.  There was no DELIBERATE cheating...simply a mistake of carelessness.

For all of those interested the top 8 deck lists are now up.

Not really sure what the EVEN is supposed to incinuate but just so I dont make Mister Raymound Robillard a liar I will continue this topic much to the annoyance of the mods I am sure and state that yes infact I did have a control magic cast against me to seal game one and did say to myself WTF but I wasnt going to argue with the logic of running a spell maindeck that had just won game one.

I guess Dave maza should of spent some of the time during the 45 extra minutes I took making my deck making sure his list was right instead of making fun of me and joking about me playing Battle of Wits.dec
