Actually the last gens tounry was not won by 4CC, a split was offered and accepted. Just thought I would point that out sir.

This is Brian Woo the 2004 Worlds Side Event Vintage Champion, just wanted to clear the air a bit, first off I dont know what problem tracerbullet has with me, after our match even shook his hand and said gg, I suppose some people are just sore losers. I wanted to thank everyone who was cheering for at the end and to give some props.

Props: To Roy Spires and Kenny Obert for being cool people and for playing very well and having good games. This win at Worlds I am Dedicating to Zak Dolan and Brian Weissman, since without their inspiration I could not have won. Props for Zak for  winning and not caring what people though of him and Props to Brian for creating "the Deck" and modern day control. just wanted to give credit where credit is due, Props to C and J's for providing prize support. If anyone wants me to do my own report please post on the thread.

EDITED: It was a side event, The T1 World Champs was at Gencon, not a side event at worlds.

Make a report, and Post it. We do want to know. Otherwise, PM me, and I'll post it on your behalf. I feel you earned the right to tell all this one time. (even Roy should be allowed to get a report in, if that is his thing.)

People commented at the tourney that they were supprized at the number of Workshop based decks in a no-proxy tourney.  It's HARSH out here! We finally get a "big" tourney to strut our stuff due to the fact that some Magic Artists were there (which I missed) and did some INSANE art modifications to Force of Wills etc (TracerBullet- You now have the most pimped out Force of Wills EVER!)

Edit: No, don't post a report. Maybe StarCityGames would be a better place to put a report up. This is preferable rather than, say, the site where you've pissed off a good chunk of it's posters and violated many rules including 4 ban-evasions. Our site policy is to ignore the banned.

Got it.

Hi all, my name is Luis and I finished 3rd with Trinistax:

Decklist:
4 Trinisphere
4 Smokestack
4 Crucible
4 Tangle Wire
1 Triskelion
1 Sundering Titan
1 Razormane Masticore
1 Memory Jar

4 Goblin Welder
1 Rack and Ruin
1 Fire/Ice

4 Thirst for Knowledge
1 Tinker
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Mystical Tutor

4 Workshop
4 Volcanic Island
4 Wasteland
2 Island
1 Polluted Delta
1 Flooded Strand
1 Strip Mine
1 Tolarian Academy
7 SoLoMoxen
1 Mana Crypt
1 Mana Vault

Sideboard
3 Blood Moon
3 Red Elemental Blast
3 Blue Elemental Blast
3 Rack and Ruin
1 Memnarch
1 Mindslaver
1 Platinum Angel

This is a pretty standard build, but UnstableCornbread and I expected a lot of Fish and Workshop, and little combo, hence the maindeck Fire and Rack and Ruin. We also took out the Chalices from the side, as they are mostly for Dragon. This was my first time playing with Workshop, and I was looking forward to it.

Round 1: Kilo, playing pretty much the exact same deck.
I was a little dismayed to play a friend round 1, much less in a mirror match.
Game 1: We both get out crucibles, but he is able to dump more permanents and grind me out with smokestack.
SB: -4 Trinisphere -4 Tangle Wire +3 Blue Blast +3 Rack and Ruin +1 Memnarch +1 Mindslaver
Game 2: I get a removal heavy hand, and rack and ruin + Crucible/wasteland prevent him from playing most of his spells. His one welder as his only permanent causes problems, getting rid of my Memnarch and Smokestack, but my 10 to 1 permanent advantage is too much.
Game 3: More of the same. I draw more removal, blue blasting welder and rack and ruin to cripple his board, as he draws nothing.
I felt pretty lucky to win, as the mirror is pretty random.

Round 2 vs Mono-white
Game 1: My opponent wins the die roll and drops plains+chalice for zero.
I lay trinisphere with workshop, and follow it up with smokestack + crucible, eventually killing with masticore.
SB: -3 tangle wire +1 memnarch +1 mindslaver +1 platinum angel
Game 2: His hate shows up, as serenity + triple abolish allow mystic crusaders to kill me.
Game 3: Turn 1 trinisphere, turn 2 smokestack, turn 3 crucible is a hard lock against him.

Round 3 vs r/u fish
Game 1: He goes first and lays a turn one null rod off sapphire+wasteland. I waste his land, and remind him he can't use sapphire when he tries to tap it next turn. He drops lavamancers and clouds while I drop crucible and smokestack. The board eventually resets to him having just a lavamancer vs my lone crucible. I drop land, go, then land, mox jet, tinker for trike and win at 2 life.
SB: -4 Tangle Wire -1 Mystical Tutor -1 Tinker -1 Rack and Ruin -1 Memory Jar +3 Red Blast + 3 Blue Blast +1 Platinum Angel +1 Memnarch
Game 2: First turn trinisphere prevents him from playing anything but 1 lavamancer.

Round 4 vs Workshop Aggro
Game 1: Crucible/Wasteland and active Welder handles all his permanents.
SB: same as round 1
Game 2: He doesn't side out trinisphere, and plays 3 of them, while I play crucible/wasteland and lock him with his trinispheres.

Round 5 vs 3-color control slaver (AltronDragon on TMD)
Game 1: Crucible/wasteland yet again, along with sundering titan at one point.
SB: -1 mystical -1 tinker -1 razormane +3 red blast
Game 2: He continues to not draw force of will, and I crucible him again, while rack and ruining his platinum angel.

Round 6
ID with RandomMiser

Round 7
ID with Legendofmagic

Top 8:
QuarterFinals vs Sean with Monoblue
Game 1: He goes first, and has mana leak and force of will for my threats, then lays back to basics. I die to 4 ophidians on the board.
SB: -1 mystical -1 tinker -1 trike -1 rack and ruin -1 fire/ice +3 red blasts +1 platinum angel +1 mindslaver.
Game 2: I go emerald, mana vault crucible. He doesnt force, and I lay volcanic, welder, and follow that up with smokestack.
Game 3. He gets a slow start, but lays an energy flux with 2 islands and a pearl, while I just have welder, shop, volcanic and smokestack (0 counters.) During upkeep, I weld in lotus for stack, then lay a trinisphere. During his upkeep, he lets pearl go without floating mana, so I then sack lotus to REB the energy flux. He doesnt lay a land, and loses shortly thereafter.

Semifinals vs RandomMiser with control-slaverish deck
Game 1 and 2 I get subpar draws and get run over by welders, mana drains and isochron scepters. ( 1 set to fire/ice, one set to mana drain.)

3/4 playoff vs tracerbullet with 4cc
Game 1: I drop the lock quickly, and he doesn't have enough countermagic.
SB: -1 mystical -1 tinker -1 trike -1 razormane -1 rack and ruin -1 fire/ice  +3 REB +3 blood moon.
Game 2: About turn 3 he forces a welder or something and I drop lotus+blood moon vs all non-basics and one island. He cant cast anything, and I eventually get out Sundering Titan.

I ended up with the pearl, and had a great time at the tournament.  All my opponents were good sports, and I was happy with how my deck performed ( ie, how often I drew Workshop....)

Pictures are up.

I apologize to all the C&J'ers I missed. Sad

Btw, these pictures give a face to some of the more famous/controversial characters (TheLegendOfMagic & Random-Miser) from TMD.

Enjoy!

I stand corrected. I was aware of this and should have said that the 4cc has either won or split 1st/2nd.

@Luis: it seems that Platinum Angel and Mindslaver came in every time you boarded. Would you prefer to just run them in the main? If so, what would you pull besides the maindeck Rack and Ruin?

Dave.

Dave -
Maybe the mindslaver should be in the main, as rack and ruin was a metagame specific choice, but platinum angel mostly went in because I was taking subpar cards out, not because it was that good. Then again, this is the first time I have played this deck, so I think I need to play it more to be more confident in my choices.

On a side note seeing alot of workshop based decks should be expected especially after all the advertising for workshop to be restricted. Though hearing that 4cc is back is not of much of a suprise (following the likely adjustment to the metagame).

Hello, I played UR Phid at the tournament.  I was expecting a field of Fish, 4CC, Workshop Aggro, and Mono Blue.  I ended up going 4-3.  The biggest lesson I learned was how much more potent Energy Flux is than Rack and Ruin right now.  (So many times at the tournament I could've dropped Energy Flux and won the game, but instead I was running mediocre Rack and Ruins.)  Here's a brief summary of my matches:

Round 1:  Animal Farm  WIN
Game 1:  I stabilize with turn 1 Mana Leak, turn 2 Phid
Game 2:  I resolve an early Blood Moon

Round 2:  TPS  WIN
Game 1:  I get an early Phid, he resolves a draw 7 but craps out
Game 2:  I Rack and Ruin his 2 mana sources

Round 3:  Heavily Metagamed-Sligh  WIN
Game 1:  I cast Ancestral Recall AND Time Walk on turn 1
Game 2:  I Ancestral into zero mana sources and die
Game 3:  I start with Island, Mox, Mox, Mox, Tinker for Colossus

Round 4:  Workshop Affinity  LOSS
Game 1:  He resolves Skullclamp and Welder before I can counter
Game 2:  I counter some threats but a Welder slips through with Jar in yard

Round 5:  Crucible Stacks  LOSS
Game 1:  I get an early Phid, but eventually he baits me with Platinum Angel and Mindslaver and his Smokestack resolves
Game 2:  He resolves 3Sphere then Crucible with Strip Mine in yard

Round 6:  Fish  WIN
Game 1:  I don't draw a red source and die to Spiketail + Lavamancer
Game 2:  I Fire/Ice his Lavamancers then cast Tinker with FoW backup
Game 3:  I break his Standstill with Ancestral (resolves), then cast Tinker with FoW backup

Round 7:  Crucible Stacks  LOSS
Game 1:  I kept a hand with no FoW and he plays Wheel of Fortune (bad way to find out your opponent's playing Stacks)
Game 2:  I resolve Ophidian and Drain his Smokestack with Gorilla Shaman in play
Game 3:  I FoW his turn 1 Smokestack, I dont have the counter for his other threats

So I end the tournament at 4-3.  It was pretty fun despite my poor performance.  I got to face opponents from 4 different countries which was cool.  As for the deck, 2 MD Disks were nice for the day, the 2 Cunning Wishes sucked.  All I ever wished for was Rack and Ruin and once for Red Elemental Blast.  Flametongue Kavu also sucked, as I didn't face any Aggro decks.  Rack and Ruin was okay, but Energy Flux would've been an absolute bomb.  All my opponents were cool, which I can't say for the other formats I played in.  The highlight of Worlds for me, though, was getting my cards signed, including several playsets of Welders, Brainstorms, and all the U/G madness stuff.  See you next time!

EDIT:  Decklist

4 Mana Drain
4 Force of Will
4 Mana Leak
4 Fire/Ice
2 Cunning Wish
2 Nevinyrral's Disk
4 Blood Moon
4 Ophidian
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Thirst for Knowledge
1 Fact or Fiction
1 Time Walk
2 Morphling
7 SoLoMox
6 Island
2 Flooded Strand
2 Polluted Delta
4 Volcanic Island
1 Strip Mine
4 Wasteland

SB:
3 Red Elemental Blast
1 Tinker
1 Darksteel Colossus
3 Rack and Ruin
1 Gorilla Shaman
1 Blue Elemental Blast
1 Hydroblast
1 Stifle
1 Razormane Masticore
2 Flametongue Kavu

Dude, you do NOT have the most pimped out FoW's. The ones Pat has are the ones T. Nielsen uses for her advertisements, so I'm pretty sure you can't fade those. That being said, I will host some space for his to be on display, and you can get r0x0r3d.

On a seperate, but related, note, I would just like to say I now own the most pimped out Goblin Welders ever. All 4 are Japanese Foil, signed in gold by Richard Garfield, and then signed in Silver by Scott Fischer and all modified by him in gold. UnbelievaPIMP.

Brian Woo can be annoying, but maybe because I have got used to him at C&J's, I found Roy Spires to be much worse when I met him at both U.S. Nationals this year (I didn't know he was Random-Miser then) and Worlds now. Some of his comments just really annoyed me at Nationals that I really didn't care to speak to him or deal with him at Worlds.

BK - I wasn't going to get into this "annoying banned people" posting thing, but please don't call him Legend. That just bothers me. That name belongs to someone else here on the boards. Two different people. When refering to Brian Woo please use one of the many names he's been given or uses. Thanks, Tom Wink

Uh... My FoW's and my FoF are also altered by T. Nielsen, but mine are better then the 1's that she used in her advertisement and she admits that herself. I will be pimping them at waterbury, and will post a link to em if i can get this scanner to work.
My FoW's are based on the following: 1 Spawn/1 Shredder/1 Captain America (w/nuclear explosion + anti Bush adminstration reference)/1 Wolverine... My FoF is based on Wizard of Oz with squee on the left being a flying monkey, and the women on the right is the wicked witch of the west.

BTW did decklists get thrown out for this tourney?

Yes, I can see the lengths that people have gone to to better their decks in the fish matchup; the day I get matched up maindeck suq'ata firewalkers is a dark day for fish indeed.

The maindeck firewalkers that I faced in round 2 were way overboard. However, seeing them game 2 and 3 doesn't seem like an uncommon situation anymore. As everyone comes to accept fish as a legitimate tier-1 deck (if you believe in the tier system), I would expect the sideboard for fish to change to accomodate dealing with firewalkers whether it be cards as obscure as torture chamber, aeolipile, rod of ruin (heh), etc.

I don't think that's true. Fish is, without a doubt, the best deck that can be made the cheapest. The previous statement holds true to both proxy and non-proxy environments. For someone who owns no power or utility cards (drains, workshops, bazaars) in a proxy environment, fish is the easiest deck to make which has a realistic chance of winning a tournament. Even unpowered, in a non-proxy environment, fish can compete and do well although with no "broken" plays to steal games.

The problem right now is that people are unsure exactly how much space in a sideboard needs to be dedicated to the fish matchup. If someone boards in 2 fire/ice, 4 REB, 4 firewalker, then sure, the fish deck will probably roll over. However, I am faithful that fish will still be one of the key decks in the format.

What I mean to say is that people like you, Marc Perez, and other good players with cards, won't play Fish for a while.  Fish will always be a consideration because of it's budgetary requirements and loyal fanbase, but it won't always be a deck that is chosen by people who choose decks.

This is my first post so bear with me if i mess this up.  I just thought I would add my comments on the Vintage tournament at Worlds.  I've been playing for a long time at C&J's and it was great to see Jeff sponsor such a large tournament.  I was impressed with the over all power level and variety of decks that showed up.  I had expected a sea of Fish for all the budget players.
I wish I took notes on the matches i had, but i can supply a glimpse of what I rememeber.  No suprise to any who know me, I brought madness(it's almost foiled out now so I've got the bling).  I tweaked it to carry the Tinker/ Collosus combo prior to the start and saw my tinkers get countered and my successful Collosus get welded back in for the mox i sacrificed.  I was not impressed and am back with the old Circular Logic build.
I drew with Fish with savage 4/4 tramplers being hard cast in the last game and running out of time.
I beat a Mask deck with my main deck tech of two Rack and Ruins.  He attacks with two 12/12 tramplers and I 2 for 1 for the win.  He forgot what turn it was in the next game and welds during his turn to give me a free turn of no welder tricks for the match win.
I beat another fish deck running Flying Men the way my deck is supposed to.
My only loss was a heartbreaker to an early tinkered 7/10 with FoW back-up for my Artifact Mutation and next game another  early 7/10 off a Welder.  I just can't deal with a huge guy that eats my land.
I then played a really cool Australian guy who conceded the last game of our match to me when he could have stalled.  His mono blue with main deck back to basics was not good for my Bazaars.
I then played David Hernandez and I just remeber that I had really good draws and it didn't seem like his deck produced for him.  I owed him for the beatings he gave me at the last tournament I saw him at down south anyway Smile
The final match I played was with a guy from Europe who was running some kind of u/r scepter deck.  He kept burning my little guys but the 4/4's did their thing. In the last game, a timely Strip Mine for for his only Island and a Rack and Ruin for his Saphire and my Jet kept him from playing all the good blue in his hand. He was upset and acted like a jerk so i was happy he lost.
In the end I was 5-1-1 and ended in 9th.  I would have liked to play for all the goodies Jeff put up as prizes, but I was happy with my performance and that of my oh so shiny g/u/r Madness deck.

Thanks to everyone who played and made staying up till 5 AM almost worth it.  And props to Wizards for finding a site in San Francisco with FREE PARKING.  The ladies at the "club" were very happy with all the dollar bills I saved on parking.

Your deck worked like a champ, and you played it well. I really needed early Trinispheres against you, and they just didn't come up (even with aggressive mulligans).

You rolled over me. It was pathetic.

 Confused

Good job though.

Wish I could have gone but with school starting up it made it hard to set time aside to I couldn't go. Oh well, just leaves me more time to prepare for the Who's On First tourney.

Congratulations to the top 8 though. Love the irony in it.
