Waterbury wasnt the only big event yesterday, it was also the day of the Longmont Time Walk Tourney.  This was the first power tourney in CO ever--well, that we know of.  It was a 10 proxy tourney and we had a pretty good selection of archtypes.  Unfortunately only 18 people showed.  Come on Denver people, where were you?

This was an extremely smoothly run tourney and overall most excellent tourney experience.

Anyways, the field breakdown was something like this:
1 Affinity
1 Crushing Chamber
2 5/3
1 5c 7/10
1 Drain Slaver
2 Dragon
2 Belcher
1 Gay/r
1 WTF
1 MonoU
1 Madness
1 Sui
1 Uw Angel control
and 2 other decks

These were the standings after Swiss:
1 - Bob Yu (Clown Of Tresserhorn) - 5/3
2 - Sam - Gay/r
3 - Shawn Buell (majestyk1136) - 5c 7/10
4 - Ryan - Virtual Insanity type Madness build
5 - Jim Gaffney (Godot) - Dragon
6 - Jeff Urich (r3as0n) - 5/3
7 - Matt - Dragon
8 - Clay - Belcher

-Clown of Tresserhorn was undefeated in games through the swiss and 5/3 performed extremely well in general

-Control slaver got pwned....hard

-Clay actually finished 9th and got bumped up when the player in 8th place(w/ Gro) dropped.

-The monoU deck performed hella well but took some harch losses - losing to madness when it had B2B/propaganda lock
The Top 8

5/3(Clown of Tresserhorn) beat Belcher
Dragon(Matt) beat Gay/r
5c 7/10 (majestyk1136) beat 5/3(r3as0n)
Dragon (Godot) beat Madness

Top 4
Dragon(Matt) beat 5c 7/10(majestyk1136)
Dragon(Godot) beat 5/3 (Clown of Tresserhorn)

-Clown of Tresserhorn concede this match to me since we're teammates and I need the power.  We played some games anyway and I won the majority of them.

Top 2
Dragon(Matt) beat Dragon(Godot)

Round 1 - Sui
Game 1 I win through 3 Duresses
Game 2 He drops 1st turn Planar Void and I win on his 4th turn.

Round 2 - Uw Angel Control
Game 1 - I get an early Intuitioin for Squee with active Bazaar so I win eventually
Game 2 - He keeps a hand with Mox Pearl, 2x StoP and FoW but no land.  He doesnt see a land until about turn 9.  During those 9 turns I've attempted to go off thrice and thrice lost all my perms.  So I go up to 37 life.  Eventually Titan and Sliver Queen beatdown outrace his Angel by 2 turns.

Round 3 - 5/3
Theres only really one thing I fear in this matchup, and its 1st turn Trinisphere backed up by Wastelands.  If I can avoid that situation I should win.

Game 1 - I win the roll so Im already in good shape.  I drop Delta, Crypt and pass the turn.  I have no uses for the Crypt, but have to drop it due to Trinisphere.  He plays turn 1 crucible backed up by 2nd turn Strip Mine on my Bazaar.  A few turns later he has a Platinum Angel on the board and I have 1 turn to live.  My hand is Delta, Animate and Intuition with Compulsion, Mox, Crypt and Delta on the board.  It is possible for me to win.  Return Squee, Intuition, Animate and compulse into a 2nd Animate to steal Welders and bring back a Xantid to block.  Unfortunately I am a terrible magic player.  I get lost in the details of what I have to do and forget to return Squee.  I think Mana Crypt ended up hitting me for about 12 damage.

Game 2 - I again play first and win on Turn 2

Game 3 - He resolves 2nd turn Bloodmoon.  I have an Island and Swamp, but cant do anything before I get pummeled by Juggs and Su-Chis.

Round 4 - Affinity (Type 2 w/ moxen basically)

Game 1 - He should have won this game.  He has an 8/8 ravager but sacks it and something else to Shrapnel Blast me twice, but I have FoW and win a couple turns later.

This deck is a hell of a lot faster than I gave it credit for.
Game 2 - I win on Turn 2

Round 5 - Gay/r

We ID

T8 - Madness
Game 1 - Turn 4 win
Game 2 - Turn 2 win

T4 - 5/3

Clown of Tresserhorn concedes, but we play about 8 games anyway.  I win game 1 on turn 2, while he gets a quick win in game 2.  Game 3 is a little more back and forth but I eventually win.  The other games were much more casual.

T2 - Dragon

We settle on a split, but play the games anyway.

I've only ever played the Dragon mirror once, and it was against an inexperienced Dragon player with a suboptimal build.  I really dont know how to approach this matchup.

Game 1 - I keep a hand with 2x FoW, Laquatus and a turn 2 Intuition.  I have to FoW and end up pitching Laquatus to FoW since outside of the Intuition I have no business.  This later comes back to haunt me since I cant kill him with tokens before he can combo me out with my Dragons and his Laquatus.  I have a chance to draw the game, but he has the Force.

Game 2- I side out all my Dragons and 3 random other things to bring in 3 Verdant Force and 4 Tormods Crypt.  I dont know if this was the right strategy here or not.

I have the goods, but no outlet.  He comboes me off w/out any trouble.

But I still end up with a hella nice Unl. Time Walk, which promptly gets upgraded to Beta.

Props:
-Stonebridge Games and Eugene for running an excellent, and for getting a Mox Jet and 2 signed Juzams for future tourneys
-Team Freak-a-leek for getting 3 members in T8
-Jeff for conceding to Bob so no Freak-a-leeks play in Rd 1 of T8
-All the guys from out of town.  Im glad some people made the trip spread the word around to your friends and lets get bigger crowds

Slops:
-All those Denver people who didnt show up
-Me, for not testing the mirror

Thoughts on Dragon:

-Up until the night before the tournament I debated what to play.  Either Dragon or Deathlong.  In the end I didnt think I could play around Trinisphere well enough yet to take Deathlong.  I was not disappointed at all in my decision.  This felt like one of the better Dragon builds(should be posted later) I've played.  4 Intuitions is the hawt sawse.

-The 5/3 matchup can be tough.  Early Trinisphere backed by Strips or early Bloodmoon backed with fat seem to be the only problem situations.  I think this is an even matchup overall with the deck that wins the coinflip having a sizable advantage.

Here's a QnD Report from yours truly:

Round 1: Connely Playing SuperGro
Game 1: I win the die roll and play first. Nothing spectacular happens. I resolve 2 juggs and a su-chi, which goes farming. I bait with a welder (Jar in grave). He forces, with one card in hand. I play titan, blow up his white sources, and it proceeds to win the game.
Game 2: Turn 1 3sphere + welder, turn 2 crucible, turn 3  thirst pitching titan, GG.
2-0, 1-0

Round 2: Shawn Playing 7/10 Split
Game 1: He wins the die roll and plays first. He gets a welder and mystical for tinker off before he passses. On my turn, I play juggs and pass. On his turn, he makes an error in playing workshop ----> Crucible, instead of land, tinker (to get a 7/10 or plats to end my day). He realizes this, and passes. I draw triskelion and enough acceleration to play trisk and welder. On his turn, he has no choice but to tinker for a trisk to kill my welder. He doesn't draw anything for a few turns, and juggs/trisk go the distance.
Game 2: He goes to 4 cards. GG. Shawn is a really nice guy, and I wish him better luck in the later rounds. I hate losing this way.
2-0, 2-0

Round 3: Ryan Playing "virtual Insanity"
Game 1: I get 2 su-chis and a welder. we eventually get into a stall, until I draw Duplicant on his arrogant. at this point it's over.
Game 2: I get turn 1 jugg, pass. He plays an arrogant and a rootwalla off lotus and bazaar. I'm not too worried. On my turn, I play academy, mox, welder, walk. On my walk turn, I draw mana crypt, play thirst, pitch titan, then play a duplicant from my hand. Shortly afterwards, he concedes.
4-0, 3-0

At this point, I'm guaranteed T8, so I draw round 4 with a fish player (although I would have really liked to play that matchup Very Happy ). Standings are up after round 4 and Jeff decides to take one for the team and lose to me, so all team members are in T8 but don't play each other round 1. After round 5, I'm 1st seed.

Quarterfinals: Clay playing belcher
Game 1: I knew I should have played 4 trinispheres main. Oh well. I win the die roll and elect to play. I mull to 4 cards and decide to keep, cause I didn't want to go to three. I go land go. This game was likely over. He plays land grant (showing me nothing but a draw7) and plays a chromatic sphere, some acceleration, a swarm, and a welder. He passes. I do the land go thing again. On his next turn, he casts windfall, to find nothing, then wheels, and passes. On my turn, I drop a bunch of acceleration, a workshop, and I wheel into a trinisphere, he scoops.
Game 2: he goes, land, lotus petal, welder, go. I go land, crypt, 3sphere go. I almost tinker, but then realize he has welder. I go to town with a jugg. (turns out, he had another land and an oxidize in his hand)

Semifinals: I get paired with Jim, and we decided to watch the winner of the other bracket to figure out which one of us has the better shot. Turns out our friend Matt Wood Wins, so I concede to Jim and let them split the walk. I then trade my beat Beta walk for the minty Unl walk that Jim got. Everybody is happy, and we all go home.

Props:
-Team Freek-A-Leek: We're like the all-stars of CO. Every tourney we go to, we win. I hope you bitches in Chi-town are ready for us!
-Stonebridge Games and Eugene: good tourney! it was very well run, and I hope future tourneys will be as good as this past one.
-Shawn and the Castle rock crew. You guys were hella cool, and I hope ya'll come up to our next tourney!
-All of my opponents for being awesome

Slops:
-Me, for playing a blatent netdeck. Also, for wanting to play TnT over 5/3
-Jeff, for narrowly missing me in swiss when it would have mattered.

As for thoughts on the deck:

I did go undefeated in games, so I think it's safe to say the deck is quite solid. It's fairly inconsistent, as I had to mull to 5 and 6 a bunch of times today, but it pays off, as it's ridiculously broken. If I were to go to Chi-town today I think I'd go with, -1 Shaman, -1 fire/ice for +1 karn, +1 Trinisphere. Shaman wasn't used at all today, although there were many times I wished I could tinker for karn (as a blocker or a way to kill moxes and darksteel citadels). Trinisphere is just too strong to not run 4 of. I won so many games just by dropping a turn 1 sphere. The SB was hella metagamed, as I expected MAD welders and dragon. turns out, I was right.

Hey clown of tresslehorm, errr...  Fluffer of Freek-A-Leek, does this imply that I'm somehow a member?

Report coming soon.

Edit:  Reports are no longer coming soon.

Ok, so let me start this off with a HUGE thanks to 2 people.

Drew (spankweasel)  Unfortunately, he's pretty pissed at the game of magic right now, and is also getting married so he let me borrow a lot of power as well as threw a lot of decks against me so I can get a little better with this simple yet complex deck.

DiceMan  It's nice to see some people on TMD are willing to help out a non-experienced player and help them get a little better.  It was selfless and hopefully I was able to contribute to the conversation just a little.

Ok, decklist time:

BUG Dragon:

Win:
4 Dragon
1 Ambassador
1 Sliver queen

Engine:
4 Squee
4 Bazaar
4 Compulsion (should go to 3 unless I see a lot of 4cc)
1 Ancestral

Search:
2 Lim-Dul's Vault
2 Intuition
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Vampiric Tutor
(Lim-Dul's Vault is fucking amazing; demonic is pretty weak, but so is vamp and intuition.  I'm going to try 3 Lim-Dul's Vault, 3 Intuition, 0 demonic, 0 vampiric)

Animates:
3 Necromancy
4 Animate Dead
1 Dance of the Dead (gonna try dropping this)

Disruption:
3 Force of Will (normally 4)
3 Xantid Swarm
1 Pernicious Deed (people ran 1 MD ground seal last time, and platinum angel sucks)

Mana Sources:
1 Brack Rotus
3 On Color Mox
1 Mana Crypt
1 Off Color Mox
(0 Sol Ring)
(gonna try to work in the other mox)

4 Polluted Delta
4 Underground Sea
2 Swamp (co-mvp all day)
1 Island (co-mvp all day)
2 Tropical Island
1 Bayou
(in retrospect, I should switch these and run 2 island, 1 swamp, 2 bayou, 1 tropical)

Board:
3 Null rod
3 Chalice of the Void
3 Sundering Titan
3 Verdant Force
2 Pernicious Deed (1 main)
1 Coffin Purge (Because people like to side in 1 blessing.  I know how to play around it, but that puts stress on the deck which usually isn't there.  So I will match their cheese-dick sideboard strategy with my own.  :-/ )

On to the report:
So this tournament only has 18 people, which SUCKS!  It sucks for many reasons but most importantly it means that a few 3-2 players are going to make top 8.  I hate that shit!  HATE it!  (more H8...)   I see a lot of welders, specifically from the top players, and try to remember how to get around platinum angel.

Round 1, GreenKnight with Control Slaver:
Game 1:
I lose die roll #1 and mull to 6.
His turn 1 brainstorm gives him tinker which kills my land and gives him fat on turn 2.  I didn't think blue had 'geddon effects...
Game 2:
Side out 3 FoW, 1 Mana Crypt, 1 Intuition, 1 Demonic.  Side in 3 Verdant Force, 3 Null Rod.
I mull to 6 he mulls to 5.
Turn 1 swarm, turn 2 vault, ... so crunchy.
Game 3:
We both mull to 6.
He counters Null Rod, He counters Xantid Swarm, He doesn't counter the other null rod, and doesn't counter the win either.
Zack is a GREAT guy.  He really enjoyed Gen-Con and was giving props to Razor and the rest all during his stories.

Round 2, r3as0n with 5/3:
I lose die roll #2
Game 1:
I force something devastating, pitching ambassador.
He applies those welder beats.  But stops after 2 "applications".  (Uh oh.)
I vault for the win, with 6 mana available, bazaar down, and demonic in hand.  He has a welder and mana for thirst.  I'm thinking about that platinum angel and that the key card to this win is deed (and I just happen to have 1 main) so I do the sensible thing: tutor for deed, and go off with my vaulted animate.  Only then do I see that I'm as smart as your average houseplant and I cry as I mill away my deed.  :-/  I make 1 ass-ton of slivers (we make a token...) and he proceeds to tinker for platinum angel.  He had welders in the yard, and I was too mad at myself to realize that with 2 more animates, I can draw the game.
Game 2:
Side out 3 swarm.  Side in 3 verdant force.
I'm way off my game now due to my mistake.  But it probably wouldn't have mattered.  Su-chi is kicking my ass fast enough that I have no choice but to hope he's bluffing the BEB.  He isn't and I don't have any permanents.

Well, 1-1 isn't so bad...  <sob/>

Round 3, Del with Cinnamon Blue:
I lose die roll #3
I mull to 6, he doesn't.
He Kegs away an early swarm, but he doesn't find Back to Basics and my draw out paces him.  He doesn't have 3 counters in hand when I have 6 mana and swarm, animate, and dance.

I don't remember exactly what I boarded, but my guess is: -3 Fow, -1 Mana Crypt, -1 Demonic, -1 Intuition, +3 Verdant Force, + 3 Null Rod.  (The deed might have come out.)
He chalices for 1, but loses a lot of cards fighting semi-dead swarms.  When he taps out for morphling, I cast necromancy, the second one in hand isn't necessary.

2-1 and recovering from my mistake induced stupidity.

Round 4, Ryan with Bazaar Madness:
I lose die roll #4
He comments that this is a race as neither of us run much disruption.  I mostly agree, and am pretty sure I have the upper hand.  Force > Circular logic and I'm theoretically faster than him.
Game 1:
I mull to 6 and should have mulled again.
I don't see a dragon despite drawing considerably more than half my deck.  Swarms and animated swarms can only chump block for so long.

Game 2:
My notes are bad and I have NO idea what I sided.  (Most likely tried to bring in deeds and verdant forces, and probably took out the swarms.)
I mull to 6 and should have mulled to 5...   again.
I keep a hand with squee, mox jet, vampiric tutor, sliver queen, animate dead, and land, and proceed to not find another tutor, or a dragon before it's too late.  Sliver queen is a good chump blocker but not forever.  He keeps 2 blue open for the 2 cards in hand, and true to form, both are circular logics.  I again draw more than half my deck and don't find a dragon, or enough tutors to get through his 2 counters.

2-2!!!  I'm fooked.

Round 5, Ben with Affinity:
I lose die roll #5
My deck is 1 turn faster than his, but on turn 2 he has 6 artifacts on the table, a disciple, and 1 card in hand.  He draws, plays Tolarian academy (oh no) and casts ancestral with no other cards in hand, floating 5!!!  He then enters his attack phase showing me 3 lands.  I combo him out with lethal damage staring me in the face.

Game 2:
Side out 3 swarm, 1 swamp, 1 intuition.  Side in 3 Null Rod, 2 Deed.
I mull to 6 as does my opponent.
I don't see any of my board cards but I also don't care.  He isn't able to apply much pressure (1 Frog, 1 worker, 1 shrapnel blast) and I combo out with out much trouble.

Ok, so I'm 3-2 and can't tell you how much I like tournaments where the number of people is screwed up and will let in a few "3-2"s.  I love that! LOVE IT!  (more <3... ) Always have loved it too!

Top 8 is cool as I'm there with 3 other friends and we are evenly distributed around the pairings.  If we all win we can have some sort of top 4 split...  But that's just not to be.

Quarterfinals, Sam with U/r Fish:
I lose die roll #6 of a possible 6.
His turn 1 lavamancer, turn 1.5 daze my compulsion, turn 2 cloud, standstill looks pretty strong.  I wait until I have swarm, 2 animates, and a "yarded" dragon to cast anything.  My recurring swarms keep his hand empty as he has to play spike tail, null rod, sac the hatchling to counter the null rod just for cards in the yard to lavamance the swarm.  His hand depleted, he is unable to apply much pressure or stop my combo.
Game 2:
Side out 3 Fow, 1 Mana Crypt, 1 Intuition.  Side in 2 Deed, 3 Verdant Force.
His turn 1 Lavamancer, turn 2 cloud, shoot my xantid is pretty strong.  Standstill turn 3 has me not so happy.  I have 2 animates in hand and 2 necromancy while he beats down.  I think I break the standstill with a swarm which he shoots and counters my animate.  He plays a spiketail and the beats are starting to put me in the area where I have no options.  I can't keep a xantid on the board so I try to animate the dragon.  He tries to remember how to break the loop with stifle, eventually he does, I necromancy in response (which I actually think is illegal in retrospect because I didn't have any permanents to tap (mental note: tap the mana NOW!!!) and I don't have enough to pay for the spiketail's ability.  The situation was very complex due to his confusion, and my doing everything in my power to allow him to mess up the stifle.  But in the end justice was served and he won the game.
Game 3:
He keeps a bad hand, and I combo out turn 2 or 3.

Semi finals: Shawn with 7/10 (a deck I've never seen in action)
I cheer out loud when I win my first die roll of the day.  (Not even in bullshit games before the tourney did I win a die roll.)
Game 1:
I combo out turn 3 as he desperately thirst to find wastelands or platinum angel.
Game 2:
Side out 2 Swarm, side in 2 Deed. (Not having played this match ruined me as I didn't side in null rods.)
His land, lotus, welder, welder, scrabbling claws(?!?!?!) turn 1 is enough to beat me.  It just takes a little time of me trying to animate stuff to "spend"his claws and failing, until he finds a titan and swings a few times.
Side in 3 Null Rod.  Side out (can't remember)
This game is pretty close and he gambles to play tolarian academy for memnarch at some point instead of recurring a wasteland.  This gives me the match as I combo out through his grimace.

Finals:
I split with Godot and we play for fun.  His report is better than mine so read it above.  I win, (despite losing yet another die roll) and get to claim my first power tourney smiting.

I gotta give props to EVERY SINGLE opponent.  They were all extremely friendly, and good to play with/against.  No bullshit, no cheating, no assholes.  Really made for a great day.
Props must also be handed to Spankweasel and Diceman for reasons listed above, and to r3as0n for loaning/trading me 4 more cards...
The store hosted a smooth, fun, great tourney; the first of many I hope.

We just gotta get more Denver/Ft. Collins players to show up.  Come on guys.  Where the fuck are you?

This is Sam the fish player (second going in to t8).  Freek-a-Leek may have won the day but team Doug Musser took 3 of the other spots (Clay with Shitty Belcher aka SHELCHER and Ryan with not even his own Madness deck aka NADNESS).  Awesome!  We came all the way from Elizabeth (anyone from Elizabeth shouold post and say what's up).  Putting E-Town on the map!
Thanks to everyone that showed up for the great tournament.  Play fish with more Crucibles if you want to win more.  Bob you should post that WTF decklist if possible.

PROPS:
All opponents: Type 1 is so much more laid back than T2.  We should learn from their mysterious ways.
Cool Guy Chris: This dude totally let Clay borrow random POWER that he needed and gave Ryan a powered Madness deck, even though he never met us before!.  Guys like you are a Yahtzee for us poor T1 players.  Sorry WTF didn't work out...
Orange Shirt Jim: For telling Ryan what a Fluffer was.
Funny Hat Matt: The Dragon dude I played in the T8.  Thanks for letting me get the whole Stifle play right.  Daze is a beast.
Stonebridge Games: Great tourney.  We''ll be back for more.  Also thanks to the old hippy dude behind the counter for the great Animal House references.
Bob: Way to not let Down Syndrome get you down little buddy.

SLOPS:
The Crappy Pizza Place Next Door: Your laxative riddled pizza made the one and a half hour car ride home both smelly and embarrassing.  God work.

Hey clown of tresslehorm, errr... Fluffer of Freek-A-Leek, does this imply that I'm somehow a member?

When did I become the fluffler? I recall going undefeated in games till I intentially conceded to Jim. Also, team Freek-A-Leek is Jim, Zach, Jeff, and me. If you want in, LMK. I'll talk it over with the fellas.

Funny Hat Matt?  You don't like my back-woods-camo boonie hat?  I'm not gonna be able to show my face again.  I am however a HUGE fan of daze in fish.  Not in anything else though.  (maybe GaT...)  But seriously, you are right about type 1 being more relaxed.  It's all about fun, and picking the right metagame deck.  (I've decided that they are all metagame decks now days.  Powerful, but still only good in certain metagames.)

When you went 2-2 drop with 4cc.  Thats what you get for playing crappy decks.

Also, for the record, I only ran 7 animate effects, not 8.  Necromancy was a 3-of.

Also, a note to all CO/Denver people.  The store already has an Unl. Mox Jet so there will be another power tourney--hopefully next month.  Lets see a bigger turnout from the out of towners/locals next time.  It was great seeing the E-town and Castle Rock crews make the trip so y'all come back now ya hear?

It was a huge deuce.  We did literally back up.  We rock-paper-scissors'd for the girls bathroom.  Definetly my worst beat ever... This smell peeled the paint.  I don't know how such a horrible, angry smell could come out of a small, asian man...

As for the team rivalry,... Word to your mothers!

Yeah, I fell to dragon in the t4 due to being a bonehead gambler.  Good Job Matt!  This was a great event and all of my friends are completely enthused about type 1 right now.  They're all getting busy attempting to build good decks and improving existing ones.  My only regret on the day is not being able to come up with another couple of players from Castle Rock and being a tool in the t4.

Shawn

EDIT: Here's a bit of analysis and a report.

9/11/04
Striking first with 7/10 Split (3-4th place)
Stonebridge Games T1, 10 proxies (Time Walk prize)

This is a report detailing the first real power tournament in the state of Colorado.  Many thanks go out to Eugene Waara at Stonebridge games for going out on a limb in an attempt to establish regular Vintage power tournaments in the state.   It should be noted that Eugene stepped up to the plate and provided prize support for top 4 despite likely having taken a loss on the Time Walk that was the prize.  A number of TMDers represented, with the T8 being almost entirely composed of Drainers.

I should start out by saying that themanadrain.com has been a fantastic resource for me in terms of sowing ideas as well as reaping them.  With that in mind, I hope that this reaches the maximum number of Denver area players so that they can help support events like this one and the Mile High Comics T1 Tournaments in the future.  Hopefully this will help to keep things growing and improving in the Denver area so that we will always have the ability to play Vintage regularly.  With the proselytizing now over, I shall begin substantive discussion and analysis with regards to the metagame, matchups and plays.

Here’s the Decklist I played:

//NAME: 9-11 7-10 Split
        4 Mishra's Workshop (2 proxies)
        3 Gilded Lotus
        3 City of Brass
        4 Gemstone Mine
        1 Tolarian Academy
        1 Mox Sapphire (proxy)
        1 Mox Jet (proxy)
        1 Mox Ruby (proxy)
        1 Mox Emerald (proxy)
        1 Mox Pearl (proxy)
        1 Sol Ring
        1 Black Lotus (proxy)
        1 Mana Vault
        1 Mana Crypt
        4 Goblin Welder
        3 Sundering Titan
        1 Memnarch
        2 Triskelion
        4 Wasteland
        3 Trinisphere
        3 Crucible of Worlds
        1 Strip Mine
        4 Thirst for Knowledge
        1 Windfall
        1 Wheel of Fortune
        1 Memory Jar
        1 Ancestral Recall (proxy)
        1 Fact or Fiction
        1 Demonic Tutor
        1 Fastbond
        1 Crop Rotation
        1 Mystical Tutor
        1 Time Walk (proxy)
        1 Tinker
SB:  3 Chalice of the Void
SB:  1 Platinum Angel
SB:  2 Viashino Heretic
SB:  3 Red Elemental Blast
SB:  2 Rack and Ruin
SB:  1 Trinisphere
SB:  3 Scrabbling Claws

Since the tournament’s announcement over a month ago and with the format being 10-proxy I knew that I would have a broad range of decks from which to choose.  The problem that can arise lay in considering the high level of brokenness that can ensue from such a large proxy pool.  The fully powered players can complement their already broad card pool with obscure hate cards that they may not possess or even a playset of lands they may not have that are steadily becoming harder to obtain. (Workshops, Bazaars)  This further enables those players to construct what would otherwise be prohibitively expensive and tough to beat combo and control decks.  The less than fully powered or totally unpowered players are also able to suddenly erupt in a fountain of brokenness, pulling wins from their posteriors on the back of random topdecks.  With this in mind I came to the conclusion that I wanted a deck with the most powerful disruptive elements that I could come up with.  Combo could conceivably run rampant in such an environment unless there was a balancing influence like workshop control decks, and with having access to two Mishra’s Workshops I decided to roll out 7/10 split again.  My concern was that with all of the proxy power that would doubtless be there several key elements of the deck become far less reliable as lock parts than they were in a completely legit format.  For reference, here’s the version that I placed in the T4 with in July at Mile High:

NAME://7-10 Split
        3 Sundering Titan
        4 Goblin Welder
        3 Chalice of the Void
        1 Memnarch
        2 Triskelion
        1 Time Walk
        1 Ancestral Recall
        1 Tinker
        1 Timetwister
        1 Mystical Tutor
        1 Memory Jar
        1 Wheel of Fortune
        4 Thirst for Knowledge
        1 Fact or Fiction
        4 Force of Will
        4 Brainstorm
        3 Mishra's Workshop
        2 Ancient Tomb
        3 Glimmervoid
        3 Shivan Reef
        2 City of Brass
        1 Tolarian Academy
        3 Gilded Lotus
        1 Windfall
        1 Sol Ring
        1 Mana Vault
        1 Mox Emerald
        1 Mana Crypt
        1 Mox Pearl
        1 Mox Sapphire
        1 Mox Ruby
        1 Mox Jet
        1 Black Lotus
SB:  3 Trinisphere
SB:  2 Blue Elemental Blast
SB:  2 Fire/Ice
SB:  1 Platinum Angel
SB:  2 Rack and Ruin
SB:  2 Duplicant
SB:  3 Tormod's Crypt

The key differences in the deck should be obvious.  The old version concentrates on locking out parts of the mana curve that other decks rely heavily upon with the Chalice.  Then you can build an immense mana base with which to produce FoW backed threats.   The mana base was very susceptible to mana denial from the 5-strip decks however, and at the time people hadn’t figured out how broken Crucible was, so strip effects typically were one-and-done instead of occurring every single turn.  Now that Crucible has become fundamental to the construction of almost every deck in the format the newer version works much better.

The new version also has the bonus of being practically immune to countermagic.  It is exceedingly rare to see a player draw double FoW or have UU up after the first turn anyway, so the multiple first turn threat capability of the deck makes control practically an auto-win for you.  The explosive mana base further enables good early development while under a Trinisphere and allows you to out-accelerate, outdraw and achieve a higher state of mana development during the parity that is typically achieved in crucible wars with opposing workshop decks.

One of the sideboard choices raised eyebrows all day, while the rest were fairly standard.  Scrabbling Claws was beautiful in the matchup where I needed it, and it served just as admirably as Tormod’s Crypt would have, while having several fringe benefits that the Crypt does not.  For example, against an opposing Welder deck the Claws allows you to win wars over Welder activations on your permanents by allowing you to remove a permanent in your own graveyard that your opponent may have targeted.  The crypt indiscriminately annihilates your graveyard by comparison, utterly negating the point of having the Welder in the first place.  The claws also help to win wars with Welders on your opponent’s Yard by thinning their graveyard of used Strips, spells and flushing their primary welder targets while drawing a card.  Even against dragon the Claws are approximately equivalent to the crypt unless they’ve had several unopposed turns of Bazaar activations.  Fortunately, three copies of the card from the board against dragon provides relative security in your ability to draw one early, and it along with a welder means 3 cards per turn are able to be removed from their graveyard. (Plus drawing a card)  The only situation in which trouble might knock on your door is one where the Dragon player gets multiple Worldgorgers into the bin and is able to cast Animate/Dance and responds to activations of the claws with Necromancy.  Of course, Crypt has the same problem, but there are bigger problems to deal with at that point than debating the merits/demerits of two cards that cost the same under a sph3re.  For me, the claws have proven their worth on the strength of drawing an additional card and are going to be the included in my board over the Crypts from now on.

Now, some tournament reportage.

Round 1, Chris playing Ravager

I win the roll and lead off with mox, lotus, Gemstone Mine and a Welder not knowing what Chris is playing.  Chris returned serve with a Workshop and Lotus which leads to Ornithopter, Ravager, double Skullclamp, Frogmite.  He finished by equipping a Frogmite with the Clamp and passed.  Upon my turn I dropped my own ‘Shop and tapped down to play Sundering Titan.  Having shifted the battle sufficiently in my favor Chris could only pass the turn with almost no hand.  On my turn I played a second shop and swung in with the 7/10.  He chumped with the ‘Thoper and sacked it to the Ravager.  In my second main phase I dropped a Jar and passed to him.  On the play he dropped a mox and swung with the Ravager.  So I Welded his Ravager into an Ornithopter and he put the Counters on Frogmite.  In his second main phase he plopped the second Clamp on the Frog and passed back to me.  The game swung decidedly in my favor this turn after I attacked and he chumped again with Ornithopter.  Cracking the Jar, I busted out Gilded Lotus for 2 more Welders who proceeded to wreak havoc with his board the rest of the game.  I also tutored up a Trinisphere and Wastelanded his ‘Shop.  I won soon thereafter on the back of a second Titan.

Game 2 was unfair for him, as even though he led off with Shop, Mox and a Bunch of Arcbound dudes, I bust out a turn 1 tinker for Memnarch and played Tolarian Academy on the second turn.  He kindly Tinkered up Darksteel Colossus for me to borrow and I won.

Round 2, Bob Yu (Clown of Tresserhorn) playing 5/3

This round doesn’t go very well for me as I repeatedly mulligan into bad hands and make what I thought was a play mistake by not Tinkering on Turn 2 in Game 1 when I could have.  It turned out not to be because of his turn 2 Welder after a turn 1 Su-Chi.  I died pretty quickly.  Game 2 was no better when I mulled to 4 and found no help in my hand.  The coolest thing was that Bob was a super-nice guy and we had some laughs at my bad draws.

Round 3, Conley Woods playing Gro

After lunch we came back to find pairings up and I was playing Conley.  After getting rolled by Bob in the First round my buddy C-Dog was not thrilled to find himself paired up against another Workshop deck.  After extensive testing we determined that this matchup was hugely in my favor because any one of my creatures, threats or lock parts resolving spells death for him for the most part.  In game 1 I went first and led off with a Goblin Welder which was met by FoW.  I passed and he went Mox, Fetch, Dryad, Go.  I attempted to play a Trinisphere on the next turn which was met with more force, and wasted his Dual.  The dryad beats me up for a few turns while I struggle to find a creature, but my third turn Crucible keeps his lands off the board so it doesn’t grow beyond 2/2 until I hardcast a Titan.  Conley floated W and let the Titan trash his lands before sending him to the Titan Farm.  Without lands the dryad couldn’t continue to grow, but continued to chip away at my life total until I topdecked Goblin Welder and Welded up a series of Threats to block and kill his Dryad and swing for the win when I was at 1 life.

Game 2 involved me taking a bunch of damage from my own Mana Crypt while generating a couple of threats, killing his small Dryads with Trikes and mowing him down with fat 7/10s.

Round 4 Jeff Urich (r3as0n on themanadrain) with 5/3

This was the best match of the day.  If you don’t know who Jeff is then check the first page of the Vintage ratings on the Wizards webpage and get back to me later.  So with that in mind, I knew this was going to be a hugely challenging game at the very minimum.

Again I win the Die roll, and draw into the most broken hand I have ever seen.  On the play I drop Mox Pearl, Black Lotus, Mana Crypt, Tolarian Academy.  Jeff cringed at the 9 Mana that I had available to me on turn 1, but I wasn’t done yet.  Tapping the Academy for UUU I Ancestral Recalled me.  I drew into a Mana Vault, an additional Mox and Kept on playing solitaire until I had a Welder and Titan in play.  Jeff’s turn 1 Fetch and mox led to Fire on the Welder and Me, but the Titan remained unanswered and a procession of wastelands and beatdown from the Titan won the game in short order.

Game 2 saw the beginning of a ridiculous game where we both have welders and Crucibles and stall each other for the majority of the time in the round.  Ben Waldron (my one of my pals from Castle Rock) claims I turned purple during this game from lack of breathing… it’s all so blurry.  Eventually Jeff got welder superiority by playing a second and I couldn’t manage to weld up a Gilded Lotus from the Graveyard to play some Draw spells and get back in it.  Finally, the procession of Wastelands from his crucible gets the best of me and I fall to a Titan.

Game 3 saw me go first and breaking out a turn 1 welder again.  Jeff’s turn one involved a Lotus, Mox and Volcanic Island which lead into Fire on the Welder and Me and a Blood Moon.  My mana acceleration along with Rack and Ruin proved to be greater than his few non-basic mountains and hand of blue spells.  A triskelion and another Welder do the deed against him in 5 turns.

Having won 3 rounds my opponent and I draw into the t8 in round 5 to play for the power.  I could have owned him, as he was playing Bombs over Baghdad, but I liked the way my seeding was looking as it was and going higher risked having to play dragon in the first round.

T8.  Instead of having to play against Dragon I instead have to play Jeff again.  Joyous.

After winning the Die roll I break out quickly in game 1 with a Welder and an Early Titan which swings Jeff down to 11.  Then he played his own Welder and a Trike to blast my tapped Welder.  He welds my Titan into an ashtray and we stare at each other while he waits for the gas, which came from Duplicant, which eats my Titan that he is kind enough to weld for me.

In game 2 I came out of the gates hot with a stream of hate for his artifacts and lands, finishing up with a tinker for Memnarch, sending him to scoop mode as all he had on the board was a Sapphire.

Game 3 was sort of a bummer for Jeff as he came up with an early Crypt, Ruby, Juggernaut and Blood Moon on turns 1 and 2.  I blow the Jugg and ruby out of the water with Rack and Ruin while not missing land drops for several turns.  He drops a Welder on around turn 4-5, and I come back on my turn with Sol Ring, land Trike.  He blasts both with Rack and Ruin while I nuke the Welder and ping him twice.  On the ensuing turn Jeff drops Su-Chi off the crypt and a couple of non-basic mountains while taking another hit from the crypt, putting him at 8.  I can’t find an answer as my hand is full of Titans and a Trike that I’m 1 land away from playing while Su-Chi starts to clock me, dropping me to 11.  On the next turn Mox Jet jumps from the top of my Deck into play followed by the Triskelion.  Passing the turn, Jeff gets hit by the crypt again and Scoops as he is now at five and can neither attack or block with the Su-chi without dying to mana burn and Trike pings.  I won the game thanks to 12 points of Crypt damage.  I felt bad winning like that because Jeff is such a great guy and I hate to win thanks to rolling Dice, but that’s Magic for you.

Top 4, Matt Wood playing Dragon.

I hate this matchup, as my only game plan is to come out with a quick Trinisphere and continually waste his lands until I find a Kill.  He wins the roll and Matt goes turn 1 Bazaar, discarding Dragon, Laquatus and Squee.  I keep a somewhat questionable hand but it has a crucible lock in it so I lead off with the Workshop and Crucible.  On the next turn he activates the Bazaar again, dropping more offal into the yard and plays a fetch and mox.  I waste his bazaar on the next turn, play a lotus and break out a Trike which eventually does 4 to him, but he combos out pretty fast after that.

In Game 2 I keep a hand that has a Lotus, 2 Welders, a Crucible and Claws.  I play out the Welders and the Claws along with a Shop and Crucible.  He gets down a turn 1 Bazaar again and starts going to town.  I knock out one of the cards he chucks and hope to draw a waste.  Instead I draw a mox and have to play conservatively, hoping to grind his graveyard down with the claws, and he activates the Bazaar pitching more stuff and playing a fetch that finds a basic land.  We keep this up for a couple of turns until I found a wasteland and began the process of torching Bazaars.  Eventually, Matt tries Necromancy on for size with a Dragon and the Claws do their thing, eating up several cards in the Yard at once, drawing a card and getting welded back into play.  Sundering Titan eventually shows up after that to take out the trash, and Matt Scoops.

Game 3 saw Matt going first again and having to mull to 6.  He again plays the turn 1 Bazaar, pitching the important pieces to win the game and playing a Mox Sapphire.  I open up with Mox, Shop, Chalice for 2.  Matt had no response to this, so I have effectively removed 2/3rds of his kills.  Now if I can just deal with Necromancy I’d be fine.  Another Turn with Bazaar activation and a fetchland in play garner me some more time.  I drop a Crucible and Waste his Bazaar on my turn 2.  Then I attempt to play Claws again to seal the deal, but he has the Force of Will to stop them.  Matt dropped another bazaar on the play and activated it again, putting dead cards into the graveyard and passed the turn.  Here’s where I may have screwed up.  In my hand was Strip Mine, Titan, Academy and Gilded Lotus.  I probably should have burned his Bazaar and passed the turn, waiting to try the Titan for the win on another turn, but instead I gambled and went for the Academy, Lotus to set up the win on the ensuing turn.  However, Matt had seen too many cards at that point and untapped, drew, activated Bazaar and proceeded to win the game with Necromancy.  I don’t know if he had the win in his hand prior to the Bazaar activation and he didn’t tell me, so the wisdom of my play is difficult to gauge.  On the ensuing turn he was going to be severely set back by the Titan and put on a Clock, in addition to possibly facing down the Platinum Angel that I was going to draw.  But I suck so I lost.

I'm really happy with the way the tournament turned out, despite the few amount of people.
This is Ryan the "NADNESS" player =]

Going into this thing I didn't originally expect to play, so I was happy when chris let me use his RUG  Madness deck.
Looking back on the tournament, I think a straight U/G madness build with maindeck force and logic would have been alot better because of all the dragon that there was.
I'de write a report, but most of the games involve me drawing well and swinging with big creatures.

Beating the monoblue with the propaganda/back to basics lock was my "play of the day"
Hopefully we can get the type 1 scene in colorado to explode

Your definetly not the fluffer, although you're prettier than Kalan.  What do you think about the rivalry with Freek-a-leek?  We could definetly take them.  It would just depend on where they want to go and if they let us get to second base or not...

It beats the hell out of going up against Serge.

To the Freeks, are youo going to Chicago for real?  We've been talking about it and it could be cool.

Castle Rockers, where do you usually play?  We should play test sometime, seeeing how you guys have cards and what not.

IT'S OVER FOR YOUR MAN!!!!! Seriously.....do you think team Freek-A-Leek is going to lose to some type 2 players? Very Happy .....We need to get more tourneys going. For real, it'll be awesome sauce.

As for Chi-town, me and Jim are going for sure with some SUPER SECRET TECH. Jeff may be joining us, but it's still uncertain at this point.

As far as playing goes, Eugene holds sanctioned tourneys on sundays for packs. Me and Jim go every week (or try to) and we win everytime. If any denverites have any balls, you'll meet us up there. I do play semi-regularly at Valhallas wednesdays (44th and harlan), although everything run there is utter crap.

So far, Peeps from castle rock are the closest thing to competition that I have seen in a while. Last time at Raven's Bazaar tourney, ALL THREE freek-a-leeks T4ed. At his second Bazaar tourney, our only 1 member who could attend (Zach, Green Knight) WON THE WHOLE SHEBANG. I do admit that Team Doug may be better than most people in CO in type 1, but that isn't saying much. STEP YOUR GAME UP!

Yeah, they're called "Team Mean Deck".

Nice report, btw.

We Castle Rock kids play at Bill's store Classic Cards and Comics.  Conley works there and Ben hangs out all the time.  I can typically be found lurking there for a minute or two after work.  Here's Bill's URL:

http://www.classiccardscomics.com

Edit: Don't forget that we scrubs from the Rock also got 2 spots in the t8 but C-dog had to go to work so he dropped.

Yep. That was me, bad things!
It went down like this:
Lose to good decks (Fish, Dragon, Gro').
Beat bad decks ("Turbo Morphling", Sligh)

This was an excellent tourney and anyone that is interested in type one in Colorado should be sure to attend the future events. I understand the next prize will be either a Mox Jet or Signed Juzam Djinn. Of course the Mox would be better, but I'd understand the Juzam since the turn out for the Time Walk was only 18...

So support your local Type One and be sure to make the trip for the next event and lets get some monthly tournaments going. The more people the better the prize support.

See you all there,

Z

I'm the Crushing Chamber player who missed the Top 8 by a topdecked Dark Rit.  Crying or Very sad  I won't post a decklist because I hae managed to misplace it somewhere, but suffice to say that my sideboard plan didn't really have Belcher in mind.

The tournament was great. A bigger turnout next time would make it even better. Props to Eugene for the tourney. We're trying to set a date for the next one so input would be appreciated.

I think that if the Tournaments were to skip months then lazy magic players will not be so tempted to say "ah, screw doing hard design work,  metagaming and going to this month's tournament when there's just going to be another one next month that I can be better prepared for..."

Restricting the supply of something that is in relative demand typically has the effect of increasing demand when that commodity becomes available.  This sort of fits into the idea that familiarity breeds contempt, no?

I'm all for October, but would request you don't hold it the 16th or 17th (I won't be able to attend) and also I'd stay away from the 30th and 31st (Halloween). Also as Shawn said Monthly > Bi-Monthly.

I figure I'll head up to longmont this sunday and talk to Eugene to set up a date for the next power tourney.

I assume Team Doug will show up? The next tourney will likely be:

No Free Proxies, $0.25 per proxy
Door prizes (Supplied by me!0
First to beat Matt Wood (winner of last tourney) get a door prize

Also, We would love the castle rock crew to show as well....ya'll were cool.

Finally, the first person to beat me (with the exception of Jeff) will get a random dual land!!! Guaranteed! So peeps in CO SHOW UP AND SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL TYPE 1 SCENE!!!!

I strongly disagree with this.  We are trying to grow a vintage scene here and the last thing we want to do is alienate players by making them pay more.  I think a policy more like:

10 Proxies included in the entry fee and then $0.50 each additional would be more appropiate.

We need to make these tourneys more attractive to players with less impressive collections, not force them to pay extra in order to be competitive.  C'mon Bob, not scared of a little competition are you?

Dude, seriously, you should at least make people work to win the prize.

I definitely think we should do this thing in October too.  Strike while the iron is hot or something.  Not to metion that between the SCP9 Chicago  Tourney and the holidays I'd rather not do it in November.

Could you clarify this point Jim?  I don't understand if you're agreeing that every other month is a good idea or if every month would be better...  Confused   I do however agree that the weekend of the 23rd-24th of October would probably be one of the best times for alot of people.  Then if we have the tournament following the one in October prior to Christmas and all of that insanity or even wait until January that would probably be the best plan that would attract the most people.  I also hope people continue to post so that we can have some sort of evidence to convince Eugene with.

Oh yeah, and all of you dragon players, I have figured out the secret tech with which I will wreck you all.    I think I'll just roll over and play dead in response to Animate Dead.

I can try.  Basically I think most people(read as: everyone but you so far  Very Happy ) are for monthly tourneys.  So far it sounds like a couple people are in favor of the 23rd for the next power tourney.  Is there a significant fraction of people who for some reason cant attend on that day?  If not I think we should pitch this date to Eugene.

EDIT: grammar

Hmmm...

Every month might be a hard sell with the wife, if you know what I mean.  Wink   But, if that's what the people want that's what they will likely get I suppose.  Pitch the 23rd to Eugene and keep the thread working.

The 23rd works for Team Doug.  All of us can make it except Clay because he needs to get a refill on his mangina pills that day.

By the way, area players, Team doug Musser is looking for people to test with.  We're pretty good and damn handsome so drop us  a line if you want to test with us.  We play t1 and we're looking to start testing extended.

Who needs playtesting? I playtest with 2 people almost exclusively, and I think my results speak for themselves. If you want, shoot me an email and we'll meet up sometme.

If team Doug Musser wants to test you should drop me a line via PM and I'll get you in touch with our crew in the Rock.  We playtest pretty regularly even though a couple of us have kids/jobs and wives/ex-wives.  At the very minimum you'll probably be able to test with Conley and Zakk when C-Dog is working at Classic Cards and Comics in Castle Rock.  Conley is fascinated with Blue-based control at the moment, Big Ben is testing Ravager, Adam is experimenting with a new, secret deck and you never know what Big Zakk is going to roll out.

Oh yeah, and losing paternity tests are bad beats I hear.

That sounds awesome.  We have a pretty big crew, about five dudes.  We play at Collectormania in Parker, they loan us cards when we need them.  We can all come to Castle Rock.  I've been to that place you test at.  Great comics.  PM me fo more info.  We got a great Fish deck and the Belcher.  Our Food Chain Goblins build is pretty solid as well.  We don't have all the cards but we have some skill and a great ability to proxy.  Plus, we're damn handsome.  And the paternity test was bad beats but I cast Flight of Stairs and countered the Pregnancy spell.   Rolling Eyes

Keep in touch.

How exactly does one cast the Spell "Flight of Stairs" anyway?  What is its mana cost?  BU?  Is its Oracle text something like "Destroy target Fetus, it can't be regenerated."?  That was perhaps the most disturbing thing I've seen on this site (beyond PhantomTapeWorm's match coverage of Smmennen at worlds) yet.  Please tell me you were joking... Very Happy   Oh yeah, FNM tonight at Classic Cards and Comics.  Show up and give Conley some competition, as his Constructed rating is too high for his own good.
