My match notes are pretty good but I’m pretty sure I missed a few parts.  I’ll try to find more information from the players.

Our Finalists are Dejan “Danâ€? Rosu playing Dragon vs. Jim Demarsico playing Workshop Aggro. After a few minutes of chat the match begins.  Before that match the players commented on how much mono blue they had seen and how they each had to play against it. Dan nailed the idea on many player’s mind when he simply said “Monoblue is gayâ€?.   They roll a die to see who would go first and Jim wins with a 15 while Dan rolls a 12.

Jim opens with Volcanic island and passes the turn.  On Dan’s upkeep Jim casts Ancestral Recall, it resolves. Dan drops Underground Sea and casts Duress.  Dan sees Goblin Welder, Razormane Masticore, lands and a Mana Crypt.  Dan is forced to take Mana Crypt as his choice and passes the turn.

Jim casts Goblin Welder off his Volcanic island and then uses Wasteland on Dan’s Underground sea and passes the turn.  Dan plays Bloodstained Mire, breaks the fetch land for Underground Sea and casts Vampiric Tutor. Dan passes the turn.

Jim plays Workshop and uses it to cast a Trinisphere.  Dan has no Force of Will and it resolves.  Jim attacks with Welder putting Dan at 16 and then passes the turn.  Dan drops Bazaar and activates it and discards WorldGorger Dragon, Force of Will and Stifle.  Dan still has only 2 mana available and ends his turn.

Jim casts Juggernaut and attacks once again with Welder and passes the turn.  Dan draws his card and activates Bazaar again and yet again still finds no land.  Dan ends his turn.

Jim uses Workshop to cast a Mox that gets him up to five mana so he can cast his Razormane Masticore next turn.  He attacks with Juggernaut.  Dan activates Bazaar again and yet again still finds no land.  Dan passes the turn.

Jim attacks with Juggernaut putting Dan at 4 life and then casts Razormane Masticore. Dan draws his card and scoops.

Game 2
Jim sided out a Fire/Ice, Wheel of Fortune, Duplicant and Razormane Masticore for 2 Tormod’s Crypt and I believe 2 Hydroblast.

Dan opts to play first.  He plays Underground Sea and Mox Sapphire and casts Vampiric Tutor and passes the turn.  Jim opens with Mox Ruby-Goblin Welder which is met with Force of Will from Dan.  He then drops Workshop-Trinisphere which resolves.

Dan drops Bazaar of Baghdad and passes the turn.  Jim plays Crucible off his Workshop and then wastes Dan’s Underground Sea, setting Dan back to only Mox Sapphire as his only mana source.  Jim passes the turn.

Dan uses Bazaar again and then drops a fetch land and passes the turn.  Jim plays a Volcanic Island, uses his Workshop to cast Mana Crypt then casts Tinker sacrificing the Crypt.  The 7/10 man came into play and destroyed Jim’s Volcanic Island.  Jim ends his turn.

Dan draws his card, activates Bazaar again and can’t make a land drop. He passes the turn.  Jim attacks with Sundering Titan putting Dan at 10 life then plays Tormod’s Crypt. Jim passes the turn.

Dan activates Bazaar and drops another fetch land, he now has three mana available.  He passes the turn.  Jim casts Goblin Welder then attacks with Sundering Titan.  Dan breaks both of his fetches and puts into play a swamp and an island, putting him at 8 life.  He then casts Chain of Vapor on the Titan, returning it back to Jim’s hand while in the process destroying his fresh new lands.  Jim passes the turn.

Dan is now only left with Mox Sapphire as a Mana source and passes the turn.  Jim casts Sundering Titan, wastes the Bazaar of Baghdad (not sure) and ends his turn.

Dan draws his card.  Jim attacks with Titan putting Dan at 1 life.  Dan draws his card and passes.  Jim attacks with Titan and ends the game.  Jim Demarsico becomes the winner of the Mana Drain Championship and takes his Black Lotus and the Championship Belt.

Congratulations to the Finalists for playing so great in a tourney filled with Stax and Mono Blue. Hopefully top 8 lists will be posted soon.  I’m trying to convince Jim to write a tourney report but he didn’t write any match notes so hopefully we can piece together his games.

Merchant Scroll can be seen as restricted in a way because should you have 2 in a hand, only one is really useful (that is, only one can get Ancestral)."

In game two, if Jim had crucible in play, how did Dan get back up to 3 mana?

Jim probably opted not to recur Wasteland on this turn since Dan had a fetcher out as his only non-bazaar land (the turn before that he needed to play the Volcanic in order to play the Titan). Seeing as how Dan also had a mox in play, no artifacts in the yard, and was able to drop a second fetcher the consecutive turn, that makes three mana right there.

But then he couldn't have played the Titan so early on. He did waste the bazaar later on. It's a judgment call, I guess. Personally, I probably would have locked him some more, yes. But I'm not an aggresive type of player. I'm not sure what he did was a mistake.

Dragon can't win unless it has a Bazaar in play.  But it can draw.  Using the Bazaar also helps the Dragon player find mana.  I think that was a mistake.

Did the players in the finals get decklists; ie, did Jim know that Dragon would be bringing in 2 Hurkyls + 2 Chain against him?  If so, he's probably figuring that Dragon has one of those cards in hand and doesn't want to lose next turn to Land + EOT Hurkyls.  (And if Dragon is at 3 land EOT it opens the possibility of winning without Bazaar through Land+Compulsion+Animate+Card).

This all depends on hand-size and number of Squees in the 'yard.  Anyway, I assume since Squee wasn't mentioned in the report the Wasteland->Underground play looked sweeter as it played out.

OTOH:

One thing I was really curious about was the Dragon sideboard; with 3xEngineered Explosives and 3xChalice.   I wonder what he was gunning for with that configuration?  It's going to be hard to get the EE to be for more than 2 with the manabase as is.  I hope the Dragon guy writes a report!  Wink

EE for two still takes out Tormod's Crypt, Planar Void, Ground Seal, Withered Wretch.

Jim told me this, "When Dan bounced Titan, he had only one card in hand and as a result of Titan's ability, he was knocked down to only Sapphire as a mana source.  Also he had no Dragon in yard, I had a Tormod's Crypt on the board and I had a Hydroblast in hand.  There really wasn't a way for him to go off so I just tried to end the game as quickly as possible."

In stead of the full coverage you could have said: in both games Dan got ass-raped by Jim, who resolved 3-sphere in both games, kicked ass with arti-fat and screwed up Dan´s mana.

No, it goes way, way beyond gayness.

But, agreed, it's still not nearly as gay as Fish.
