September 24th, 2004 – 1:28 pm
This is where my journey begins; I cut out of work early for “Family Issues and jet to my house start packing for a 3-day adventure to:
Winnie’s Dance Ranch / The Aztec Sketchy Inn
So it’s about 4:15pm and Ben Shows (the other member of Team NH, he’s Nosre on TMD). So we finish packing our stuff and head to Keene to meet Derek. From Keene, we jump in Derek’s car (Scion) this car is tight as hell, especially if you are of the large variety like me. So we make our 5-hour journey in 4 hours and nothing really cool happens besides listening to some old school rap and listening to Ben play Doom 3 in the back. Ben is the only person in the car that knows what he is playing. So trying to figure out the Meta game in the car on the way up was a bad idea because I got a headache.
…
September 24th, 2004 – 9:59pm
So we get there and head inside and register our room. There was this old guy at the counter, that had terrible hearing and just acted very strange, all he did was brag about his wife. Then we saw her. Now when I say “old dude I mean really old and lots of white hair. This over tanned toothpick walks by, with a rack bigger then a female elephant. (Those had to be fake), IL ask Kerz though, I saw him macking on her on tournament day. Her name was Winnie.
So after the old guy telling us a story about the Inn being the IBM international training center in the 70’s and his wife taking a painting off the wall an finding a hidden staircase. I was just about to write this place off as being the sketchiest hotel ever. But then I remembered that I had to sleep here still. So in an attempt to find other people with magical cards we roam around and check the bar, we notice this lady is probably 45ish on the karaoke stage singing Guns and Roses and lots of other middle aged people with no magical cards.
So we go to the car and get my cell phone in hopes that I had remembered to put Jeff Anand’s Cell in it. But I didn’t. So Derek proceeds to lock the keys in the car, with it on auxiliary with my cell phone plugged in. Granted my cell phone needed to be charged, but this was not the course of action I wanted to take. We say fuck it and go to the hotel an order a 32-slice pizza for $11.50 and they deliver it! Score. We play test some games; Ben ends of getting in touch with Jeff and he stops by for a while. So I get sick of trying to figure out what’s going to be good tomorrow an just play Thorme’s 5/3 build from Gencon.
September 25th, 2004
I wakeup earlier then I want due to lots of light + windows in the room. So I jet down to the room it’s being held in and hang out with Jeff Anand for a while.
So it begins:
My notes were very scrambled so I’m going to do the match results QnD
Round 1 – Eric with elf He wins the die roll and goes: chrome mox-imprinting biorhythm, drops a temple of the false god and says go!
Workshop, trinisphere, wins
2-0 1-0
Round 2 – Feature match vs. Kerz with 3-color tog.
These matches are always insane, I don’t think Kerz and I have ever had a bad match.
He wins game one by countering my stuff and dropping a tog with wish. Pretty standard Game two, I got a broken hand with first turn tinker for titan, second turn juggernaut. He scooped
Game three we went back an forth for awhile, I cast duplicant an removed a tog, an proceeded to draw nothing for 12 turns at least, then he cast yawg will. In response I thrist into ancestral and reb. Cast ancestral into land.
He plays tog and walks, attacks an I reb, but he has force backup and a drain in hand.
3-2 1-1
Round 3 – Matt Huttle with Fish. (Pm if your name is spelled wrong.)
Games one and two are me casting trinisphere and using fire/ice on his small creatures. Then dropping juggernaut.
5-2 2-1
Round 4 – Eli with Control Slaver
Game 1 Trinisphere/ crucible strip mine lock. Game 2 He goes broken with slaver, two welders and pents. Game 3 He gets mana screwed and I have 1st turn juggernaut.
7-3 3-1
Round 5 – Joe with 4cc Game 1 I have first turn trinisphere, second turn juggernaut. Game 2 I walk into a drain on my su-chi and he has lots of business to shut me down. Game 3 Control of the board goes back and forth then I top deck Sundering titan an he has no counter.
9-4 4-1
Round 5 – Richard? With Gat Game 1 I deny his mana and drop trinisphere Game 2 he gets a big dryad an beat me down Game 3 he gets mana screwed again and I have duplicant for his turn 2 dryad and juggernaut the following turn.
11-5 5-1
So at this point, I’m 5th seat with 15 points and a tie breaker of 52%, the guy I’m paired against has 16 points and got paired down to me. So we ID.
After round 7 is over, Kowal informs me I got the boo bay prize of 9th place because someone beat my tiebreaker. I was pretty disappointed. But I did have a winning record, so maybe next time.
12-6 5-1-1 9th place
Overall it was a great tournament, I’m really looking forward to the next one.
Onto the deck: 5/3 4 Juggernaut 2 Su-Chi 1 Triskelion 1 Duplicant 1 Sundering Titan 4 Goblin Welder 1 Gorilla Shaman 4 Trinisphere 2 Crucible of Worlds 4 Thirst for Knowledge 1 Tinker 1 Time Walk 1 Ancestral Recall 1 Mystical Tutor 2 Fire / Ice 1 Wheel of Fortune 1 Memory Jar 1 Mox Sapphire 1 Mox Ruby 1 Mox Emerald 1 Mox Jet 1 Mox Pearl 1 Black Lotus 1 Sol Ring 1 Mana Vault 1 Mana Crypt 4 Mishra's Workshop 1 Strip Mine 4 Wasteland 1 Tolarian Academy 4 Volcanic Island 3 Shivan Reef 2 Polluted Delta Sideboard 1 Tormod's Crypt 4 Chalice of the Void 1 Crucible of Worlds 3 Red Elemental Blast 3 Rack and Ruin 3 Hydroblast
The Deck performed great all day, The only changes to the deck I made were, 4x main deck Trinisphere and – 1 Crucible of worlds. Due to the large amount of combo and control, that plan went over very well. The only cards with the deck that I’m considering changing are: 1x Gorilla Shaman 2x Sui-Chi The Sui-Chi are in there for the obvious reason that a 4/4 for 4 with an ability that can be semi useful. But the 1 shaman just seems too random and Sui-Chi and be just as much of a threat for your opponent and for you if you are paired against welders. I’m looking into other options for these slots, Suggestions would be great.
Props:
Bryce and Kowal for holding a kickass tournament and not changing the prize structure when most people would. Derek for locking his Keys in his car. Jeff Anand for letting me borrow foil welders. “old dude for various moments of hilarity Thorme for letting me borrow his deck list 8) To all my opponents for being cool people.
Slops: Me for getting 9th Friendly's for forcing me to get a 5scoop Sunday with lots of toppings. The 4-hour drive home
September 26th, 2004 10:01am
We wakeup an hour later then we wanted, So we jump in the car an start our trip to concord for Andy stokingers Library tourney.
We get to a payphone and call the place to have them wait for us.
This wasn’t much of a tournament, there were 14 players I think. And 4 rounds of Swiss.
So I didn’t even bother attempting to take notes, here is what I remember:
Round 1 vs. sui/splash red – I win 2-1 Round 2 vs. Fish - I win 2-1 Round 3 vs. TnT - I win 2-0 Round 4 vs. Ben (teammate) We Id and hit subway.
So Andy cuts to top 4.
I’m paired against TnT again; I win 2-1 and listen to him bitch about my draws every game.
Ben and I ID I take the library and give him $70.
