Here's the Scoop!

Eugene at Stonebridge games has set the next type 1 tournament for 10-30-04.

See website here: http://www.stonebridgegames.com/

All of the details aren't set yet (start time, # of proxies) but they should be becoming more clear as time goes by.

The prize is going to be an unlimited MOX JET, and the alternate will be a Signed Juzam Djinn if too few people show.

Entry is likely to be $15 and I suspect that Eugene will allow unlimited proxies this time with a charge of $0.25 for each proxy beyond the initial 5.  This is subject to change based upon feedback that I receive from players that commit to coming.  Also, if you call and ask about the tournament Eugene will be far more likely to have prize support if he sees that there are going to be a raft of people there.  Clown of tresserhorn, Godot, R3as0n, SpankWeasel, Samtheham, Tainted_wood (previous Champ) GreenKnight and whomever else would like to come is more than welcome to show!  We need your participation for this to continue, as Eugene is going to be picking up BETA RUBY and possibly a BETA WALK for future prizes!  Any questions, requests, PM me and I'll relay that to Eugene.

I need your guys' input as to format so that I can solidify the details of the tournament with Eugene.  I'm all for the unlimited proxy format with Paying 0.25 for each proxy used beyond 5.  It gives me the sense that at least the powered players get something for owning power other than a woody, and that the unpowered players can help to subsidize Eugene.  I mean hell, if you can pay 15 bucks to play in the tournament you can probably pay 16.25 if you play with 10 proxies right?  I also move to have the tournament start at 11 instead of noon.  That way if we have a larger turnout and more rounds we'll get done at a reasonable time still.  Let's get some specific suggestions people!

I doubt I'll be able to make it to this one, but I bet I could hedge out for the beta pieces. I think $0.25 is perfect for additional proxies.

also: Hooray for western t1 tournies!

Eugene's obtaining of the beta power will be largely dependent on how these next couple of tournies go.  Time to sack up and support your local power tourney.  It's a mox jet for crying out loud... can't you at least clear your calendar a month in advance for one day?  That way the future of these is better insured or we're all gonna be screwed and the closest thing we'll get to this is sanctioned at Mile High for 400 bucks in prize money... which happens like twice a year.

Wouldn't it make more sense for Eugene to buy cheaper power so he doesn't lose money at these things?  As much as I would like to win Beta power instead of Unlimited power, if we can keep the tournaments happening, then I don't really care.

If Eugene can obtain the Beta power for approximately the same price as the unlimited stuff don't you think that the draw of beta power will further entice players to make the effort to come?

Anyway, I still haven't heard any suggestions/requests from you people regarding the format. (#of proxies, entry fee, start time)  I need this information so that Eugene can finish scheduling the tournament and I can complete my duties.

EDIT:  What do you guys think about perhaps moving the tournament to November 6.  Several of my friends from the Rock will be able to make it then and not on Oct. 30, increasing the number of players we have.

Honestly,  don't think it matters what time the tourney starts.....If it's on a saturday, most people will be willing to stick around. As far as entrance fee goes, 5 proxy + $.25 a proxy beyond the fifth is fine by me.

As far as the date goes, if you move it to november 6th, Me, Jim, and Jeff (Basically the competition) will be unable to attend, as we're planning on heading out to chi-town.

11/6 is the same weekend as the SCP9 Chicago tourney, so moving it to that day is a terrible idea.  You'll lose just as many people as you gain.

He was/is getting the power hella cheap so its all good.

As for the proxy issue:

Quote
It gives me the sense that at least the powered players get something for owning power other than a woody

We're not here to make people feel good about owning power;  we're doing this create a competitive environment and attract more players to type 1.  We dont have a strong enough player base to make it harder for people to compete.  I think the proxy rule should work this way:  Entry fee gets you 10 proxys and then you pay $0.50 for each additional.  Entry should at least give you the ability to proxy the P10 and then $2 for each additional playset doesnt seem too harsh.  If people have a stronger feeling that they can compete they'll be more likely to come, and keeping the price as low as possible will  help to attract people with less jack to throw around.

As an additional note:  if anybody wants to go this but has issues getting a ride, let us know.  We'll hopefully have people coming from all over and should be able to work out some sort of system to get you there.  I can probably cover anybody in the Boulder area.

OK, so nov 6 is out.  We need to reach a consensus on the proxy issue, so either we set up a poll or have public voting within the forum to determine our course of action.  I'm sad to note however that I just found out that I may not be able to attend on Oct. 30, so this is all could be pretty academic for me i guess.  So let's make a decision and finish this up so people will commit.

Okay so all of Colorado is out to keep me from going to the major tournies. I planned my vacation to Hawaii in Feb. for July 10th-18th, when does MHC's have their $400 tourney 7/10!
Next this power tourney is slatted for 10/30 and guess what? I can't make it (as my Son's birthday party is far > Magic, even if this is power. And the way I see it he has 6 years on this so... Colorado Conspiracy Theory - 2, Zach - 0).

I vote for 10 proxies .50 more beyond that....but in all honesty, I don't really care. last time, only a few people couldn't run "optimal" list cause of the issue. 10-13 proxies covers a lot of decks.

also, sucks that you can't go zach! Hopefully me and jim will rep. and take home the roc!

Also, shawn, if we don't get enough people (aka you can't go), would moving the date to a sunday make things easier?

I think that things changed again (got my wife to relent on going to some gay halloween party) and now I just have to make sure my friends are all set.  Adam, Conley, Ben, Zach and maybe another couple are primed to fire assuming that date works.  Let's go with keeping it on saturday for now.

@ The issue of people playing optimal decks:  This is a great principle to uphold, but would you rather have people play suboptimal decks and know how to pilot them correctly or play "optimal" decks and make gigantic mistakes with them? (like when my first round opponent tinkered into a DSC when I had active Memnarch and a WELDER on the board)

For what it's worth, we are still in the "get people to play more type 1" stage, and as Eugene doesn't have all that many singles, much less type 1 singles YET, we should allow as many proxies as possible.  Thus in the debate between 5 + $0.25/proxie, and 10 + $0.50/proxie, I imagine that most people are at 10-15 proxies wanted.  That costs $1.25 to $2.50 extra from choice 1, and $0 to $2.50 extra for choice 2.  If we need more than 15 proxies, things are just getting ridiculous, and thus I vote for 10 + $0.50per.

As for dates, I just simply don't give a shit.  But as soon as you announce the "first person to beat last week's champ" prize, I WILL dissapear into the bathroom to claim my prize.

On that note, what should I play?  White Weenie, Mono-G Land Destruction, or W/r Shahrazad-Fork?

thanks to Jacob Orlove for moving our thread to a location where we can still post.  OK, I'm going to contact Eugene tonight and confirm the following with him:

10 proxies with entry fee + $0.50 per each beyond that,
11:00 start time with 10:00 deck registration,
$15.00 entry fee,
10/30/04 Date

I want to have this be the last word, so if you have any specific requests or complaints about this setup you had better express them with some good argument now or forever hold your peace.

Well look at our little community!  This is just grand!

The cost thing is great.  People would pay to play, no matter the extra proxying cost.  The store might as well make a little money off it.

Is it my understanding that the tournament will be held, followed by much drunken Halloween antics or is that out.  Because we are always up for drunken Halloween antics.  Maybe I'll have a chance to make out with Bob's mom.  Again.

WE'LL BE THERE.

TEAM DOUG.

PS:  Don't worry Bob.  I'll let you watch.

Hell, you only made it to first base with Bob's Mom?  I've heard that everybody else SCORED.  Like six times.

I also heard that Bob is playing Oath, so look out for low flying Cognivores!

That is all.

Shit, I'm always down for some drunken shenanegans. As far as oath, I've been testing it, but I don't think I will be plying it.....who'd you hear this from Shawn? I will likely be taking some form of aggro, as 5+ rounds of magic makes me tired.

Shhh... it's a secret.   Wink   Themanadrain.com is full of such secrets, and being as you were so kind as to post the U/G Oath thread and argue so eloquently for it I figured you were a lock to Play CogniOath.  But at any rate, aggro seems to be a liability against combo and that scares me.

The question in my opinion becomes one of this:  Will there be a bunch of followers that suit up dragon in the hope that the metagame will look the same as last time?  If that's the case I hope that they meet an insurmountable wall of dragon hate.

Back to what you're playing Bob, I'm just trying to throw them off your trail.  Very Happy   Nothing but love for you baby!  At least you're not as bad as me and give away what you're playing to Chris richter so he can post your tech as the FRONT PAGE QUESTION on his Ask the Judge Column on SCG.com.  That makes like 4 front pagers for me, BTW.  I hate that Chris Richter. Razz   Actually he's pretty cool and answers my obscure, idiotic questions.

ummm.....so yeah, I'm all for drinking after the tourney. My place is small and in Golden, so i doubt we'll be able to do it there. I would also volunteer Jim's place, but that'd be bitch made. Any suggestions?

As far as deck choices goes, listen close.....I'll be playing a Fun deck. Probably not tier 1, but just something fun. Lord knows Shawn/Jim/Matt/Team Doug needs the mox more than I do. I'm thinking I wanna play something aggro, although I may play animal farm or turbo lich Very Happy

Also Shawn, you better tell your boys to represent. As last time, only you T8 (1/4). I won't count the dude who played Gro, as he probably got lucky with tie breakers.

-Bob

PS. I don't think it really matters what I play. Team Freak-A-Leek WILL be taking home a mox jet, even without the presence of Zach.

Must it all come down to violence?  Very Happy   Ultimately yes, I suppose.  I believe Bob is calling us out, however.  Don't worry big guy, our GATs are loaded and shootin bullets.   I've got several members of the castle rock crew hooked up with some weird-ass tech designed to whoop some weird-ass... uh, ass I guess.
