id like to discuss the merits of distress.

Card : Distress
Cost : BB
Type : Sorcery
Power :
Wording : Target player reveals his or her hand. You choose a nonland card from it. That player discards that card.

its pretty powerful, but is it comparable to hymn to tourach? is seeing their hand and targeting one card better than choosing two at random? in most situations probably not.

is it comparable to duress? its costs one black mana more for the added benefit of letting you choose a creature. i guess it could grab welders, dragons and assorted baddies, but it seems to be inferior to duress.

with powerhouses like hymn, duress, mind twist and hypnotic specter, does suicide black have room for another discard card?

if so, is distress that card?

It's so much worse than Duress. It's about Hymn-level, which still makes it unplayable.

Why would I want to rip a dragon out of my opponents hand?

It's pretty much strictly inferior to Duress.  Duress costs one less, and most creatures, like the ones you named, Distress doesn't hit.  Welder is in play, and obviously you wouldn't hit Worldgorger.

It is 4th in my personal discard list. To clarify, mi Top5 is the one below:
  • Duress
  • Unmask
  • Cabal Therapy
  • Distress
  • Hymn to Tourach
  • [/list:u]
Duress is far the best: low-costed, can take away almost any menace the Opponent should play.
Unmask has an excellent discard range, being able to get rid of creatures too, and a good alternative cost: being able to make our opponent discard 2 cards
whe choose on turn one (by making Duress+Unmask) can be an unvaluable starting; on the minus side, it is a bet to be played without being foreplayed by a Duress
Cabal Therapy is obviously great when you're able to Flashback it, but can be a good single shot discard if a Duress already hitted the opponent or if you know your oppo's deck and are worried about a given card (Cabal for FoW is always an option to be considered); great against bad players who Wish for a card without being able to play it (Way too common Wink )
Distress can get rid of any nonland card without the need of whiping away your own hand, but it's a bit too costed: CC 2 is not good, but BB is definitely bad, not allowing this card to be played in multicolored decks, thus making this worst that Unmask (since both are palyable only in Monoblack decks, maybe with a splash).
Tourach made history, but is nowadays not worth playing: way too many decks around that play using their own graveyard; what if I make a W-Mud player discard, to say, Triskelion and another random card, while he has a Welder in his hand? Or make a TPS player discard something that's nor Fow neither Y.Will? I think that aiming is better than quantity, so Tourach is going 5th

I used this card in an early version of dragon, I could use it against my opponent or cast it on myself if I had dragon in hand and no way to drop it into the yard. It also has the same use in various reanimater style decks.

Well, I'm no great thinker. But I'd say that Distress is about  {B} too expensive Wink Yeah, I know it had been awesome if it costed just {B}, but I would anytime choose Hymn over Distress. And I would'nt even let Distress see T1 play.

Short and brief answer, but it's my opinion.

Sincerely, Lars P.

You do realize that sui black barely qualifies as a deck anymore.

Regardless, the only advangage it has over duress is the ability to take a welder, which doesn't matter, as by the time that you have two black mana, he's already played a trinisphere, or quite possiably has drain mana up (depending on what kind of welder-based deck your opponent is playing.)

If you've been forcing them to discard worldgorgers, then you should reevaluate your game plan.

Don't post in old threads, espcially ones as basic as this one. Did you even say anything that hadn't been said already. Verbal warning.

Oh, and thread closed.
