So basically, I’ve been working on Oath for sometime now, and Meandeck releases their version of oath just before Our tournament. Oh well, I’m actually quite happy, as I get to jack their ideas and make it my own! Me, Jim, and Ian get there and find out it will be 5 rounds of swiss cut to T8. There were 22 people and the metagame was LOTS of Oath and welders with a splash of combo and scrubs. Other control decks were present as well, such as GAT, Tog, and 4cc. Here’s my report:

Round 1: Jim (Godot on TMD) playing Dragon
Seeing as how a draw would fuck us both up, and seeing as how he needed the power (not to mention we’re teammates), I concede to him and we go scout.
0-1, 0-2

Round 2: Zach playing Burninator
Game 1: He plays lavamancer, I play Oath.
Game 2: He plays Ankh of Mishra, I play Oath.
1-1, 2-2

Round 3: Nation playing Belcher
Game 1: I keep a hand with turn 1 force and turn 1 mana leak. He doesn’t do shit turn 1, and I draw Intuition. A couple turns later I win.
Game 2: He plays channel turn 1, which I force. Then he plays lotus Necro. I lose.
Game 3: I’m on the play and keep a hand of mox, land, land, land, leak, energy flux, waste. It was pretty sketchy, but paid off. I lay a land, mox, and pass. On his turn, he drops chrome mox, mox pearl, mana crypt, chromatic sphereX2, breaks them, rituals, then attempts to twister with 2 cards in hand and only 1 floating. I counter. On my turn I play energy flux. He keeps a chrome mox and topdecks a tinder wall. He passes. I then draw Intuition and after 5 or so turns, I drop a platinum angel off a drained will and the game is mine.
2-1, 4-3

Round 4: Chris (Mind Under Matter on TMD) playing Tog
Game 1: I get a turn 2 oath with orchard and force back up. He wishes for edict, but I topdeck the mana drain on my turn.
Game 2: My hand is; 2 intuition, mox jet, mox sapphire, lotus, land, orchard. I draw into brainstorm, lay my power and pass. On his EOT, I intuition, he forces, I do it again, it resolves, and I get the oath to end his day. I think at one point he wishes for stifle (He didn’t run naturalize in the board), but I get to untap and I’m holding the leak.
3-1, 6-3

Round 5: Sam (SamTheHam on TMD) playing Urw Fish
Sam is a great guy. I was going to split, but there was a small chance that he wouldn’t draw in. So, we play it out.
Game 1: I drop an oath off an emerald and island. It stalls long enough for me to find orchard. Turns out, he kept a hand of triple wasteland.
Game 2: I have the god draw of orchard + mox + oath with force back up. He has double force.
Game 3: I’m on the play. I drop an early oath and protect it, as he tries to disenchant it twice. When he taps out to play standstill, I drop back to basics. He can’t handle the enchantments.
I still agree to draw with him, as there’ll be SOME chance he makes it. Turns out, he did make it to top 8.
3-1-1, 6-3-2

Quarterfinals: Conley playing GroStill
Game 1: I crush him with card advantage. I think I Aked for 3 and four.
Game 2: We’re in the late game and we get into a huge war over his ancestral. I wish for Fact and fact into mox, mox, land, land, AK for 1. He facts into regrowth, dryad, land, mox, drain. I lose with the right quickness.
Game 3: I have a turn 1 orchard oath with force back up. Apparently he had a GREAT hand of lotus, land, walk, recall and vamp. When I oath up akroma + pristine, it’s GAME OVER for his man.
4-1-1, 8-4-2

In the semi’s, matt concedes to Jim, and me and Jim wait to see who make it to the finals. 4cc did, and Jim thinks he has the better shot, so I concede to him. He lost in 3 close games.

Thoughts about Oath: Wish is a cute trick, but probably unneeded. I didn’t see a platz all day, so it was kinda worthless, although wish--->fact is pretty sexy. Also, I think I would run with 1 Akroma, 1 Prisitne Main. It free up a precious SB slot, plus, Prisitine is good in about all the match ups I played. She’s fucking incredible. Also, Cinnamon was right about the mirrors. Had I known there would have been THAT many oath lists, I would have upped my waste count from 4 to 5 and ran 3 crucibles in place of ground seal.

Finally, Props go to:
Team Freak-A-Leek – Attendance: 2 Top 4 Appearance: 2 This makes the second tourney in a row that all members have T4ed. Wow.
Shawn, Adam, Conley, and the rest of the Castle Rock Crew – thanks for making the drive!!
Team Doug Musser – Always a pleasure to kick it.
Eugene and Stonebridge Games – Keep up the good work!!
Matt and Drew – Nice to see you two again in quite some time
All my opponents for being mad cool

And Finally, Props to MEANDECK for building my deck. Where would I be without you? My decklist would definitely be sub-optimal by two cards. Ice age Brainstorm >>> MM Brainstorm Very Happy

Slops go to:
Jim – for not winning the whole shebang
Zach – for not showing up….although I wouldn’t either if my kid had a birthday on that day.
Me – for not laying a savage deuce like I did last time
Eugene’s Niece – for not giving me free candy

As for Top 8 Lists,

I'm in awe of the fact that anyone would think that dragon has more game than oath vs 4cc.  That is a shame that you conceded only to have him lose in the finals.

Well, to be fair, we did test 4cc vs. Dragon and dragon had an edge if the 4cc player wasn't very good. Not to sound like a jack ass, but from the look of things, that 4cc player wasn't too good. Plus, postboard, dragon has a great shot at beating 4cc, bringing in the Man Plan and Chalices. It still sucks that he lost in the finals though.

Here’s my report of my experience at Stonebridge.  I played my own version of 7-10 split.  Yes, there’s a Nether Void in there.  Yes, it is the Fourth Trinisphere.  Whether I draw it or Tutor for it, it has not failed me yet when I needed to stop my opponents from playing spells.  It does its job quite well, and we can debate its merits all day long but my personal experience is that it Wins games when resolved.  If you are fortunate enough to have out a Sph3re in play at the same time people will scoop.  Here’s my list:
//NAME: 7-10 Split
        4 Mishra's Workshop
        3 Gilded Lotus
        3 City of Brass
        4 Gemstone Mine
        1 Tolarian Academy
        1 Mox Sapphire
        1 Mox Jet
        1 Mox Ruby
        1 Mox Emerald
        1 Mox Pearl
        1 Sol Ring
        1 Black Lotus
        1 Mana Vault
        1 Mana Crypt
        4 Goblin Welder
        3 Sundering Titan
        1 Duplicant
        2 Triskelion
        4 Wasteland
        3 Trinisphere
        3 Crucible of Worlds
        1 Strip Mine
        4 Thirst for Knowledge
        1 Wheel of Fortune
        1 Memory Jar
        1 Nether Void
        1 Ancestral Recall
        1 Fact or Fiction
        1 Demonic Tutor
        1 Fastbond
        1 Crop Rotation
        1 Vampiric Tutor
        1 Time Walk
        1 Tinker
SB:  3 Chalice of the Void
SB:  3 Ray of Revelation
SB:  3 Red Elemental Blast
SB:  3 Rack and Ruin
SB:  3 Swords to Plowshares

As you can see, I’ve twinked the board out to beat the Oath Matchup, which it does all day long.  I’m basically able to ignore Aggro, Blue based control has fits dealing with this deck and multicolor control decks are mostly a 2-0 joke when I face them.  The Void is also in there to shore up the Mirror match because other Workshop decks don’t play Gilded Lotus to accelerate out of the hole that the card creates.  At any rate…

Round 1:  Drew (SpankWeasel) playing Bazaar Madness.

Drew and I know each other and he figures out pretty quickly that I am playing 7-10.  His comment is that he picked the Wrong Deck for that day.  I can only nod my head in agreement with him.  I win the Die roll and opt to play.  I lead with the traditional ‘Shop/Sph3re, to which Drew can only look forlorn about.  He returns serve with… Taiga.  I take the turn back and drop a waste to nuke his mana while tapping my Shop for a Mox.  Drew plays a Bazaar and starts spoiling his hand for a land, pitching madness men and a Roar into the Bin.  On the play again I drop Mishra’s Workshop and a Gilded Lotus, which led to my Secret Tech of Nether Void.  Drew’s face explodes in mirthful laughter as he looks at the Sph3re/Void combo and scoops up his cards.  He feels compelled to Call over Matt Wood (Tainted_Wood) to show him the savage enchantment lockdown.

So we board and Start playing again.  Drew leads with Fetch/Taiga/Jet/Rootwalla and says go.  I lead off with a Wasteland=>go to nail his land.  On the play again Drew beats me up with a pumped lizard after playing a Trop and lets me go.  I bust out with another Waste to nail more land and pass the turn back.  Drew looks unhappy and has to drop the Bazaar to look for land.  The lizard pings me and I go again.  I topdeck a Black Lotus and drop a Shop/Lotus/Gilded Lotus/Thirst for Knowledge (pitching Titan)/Ancestral Recall with the spare mana from the Black Lotus.  Drew looks Quite sad about this and plays another Lizard and hits me again.  I drop the Third wasteland on him and nail his colored mana along with tapping the gilded Lotus for 3 Goblin Welders. (!!)  Drew drops another colored source after activating the Bazaar and Madnessing Nothing.  On the play I topdeck Duplicant and play my second ‘shop so I can Dupe his Lizard.  Welder tricks ensue, and the game ends with a Titan popping into play and all of Drew’s men having been imprinted on my 1/1 Duplicant (who became a Titan).

Round 2: Kalan playing 2-land Belcher.  (I now hate this deck)
Kalan and I play after someone screws up pairings so they have to be redone.  I win the roll and lead with Shop/Sph3re.  I win.  Game 2 sees us both Mull to six.  I keep a hand with a Sph3re/Vamp Tutor/Gemstone Mine so I keep and hope to see a turn.  Kalan goes Land Grant on the play revealing Channel/Tinder Wall/Belcher/ESG/something Irrelevant.  So he finds a Trop, removes an ESG and Channels into a Belcher.  He activates Belcher.  He reveals 2 cards before He finds Bayou.  I take my beating and hope he doesn’t have any more gas after expending his hand.  I tutor up a Shop and hope to get another turn.  It turns out he topdecks Sol Ring to go along with his Tinder Wall and he belches me out.

In game 3 I lead with a hand that has a Lotus/land/chalice so I chalice for 2 to prevent channel and Land Grant.  This move was debatable.  If I had done 0 he couldn’t have played the Mana Crypt, but he had ESG anyway so he could play his 1-mana artifacts (sol ring, Vault) and drop Belcher anyways.  So I have a turn to find an answer to blow up his board.  I don’t find it and die.

Round 3: Ian playing Oath.

Well, I finally have to play Oath, which I’m Metagamed against.  I win the Die roll and we both Mull.  I have to keep a bizarre hand because I have Shop, Shop, Lotus, Titan, Crop rotation and another card.  I lead with Lotus, Shop Go.  Conley is sitting next to me and laughs because he’s used to me exploding out of the gate with a hand like that.  Ian goes Library=>go.  I smile and draw.  I Crack the lotus for GGG and tap a Shop.  Crop Rotation is met with a surprised look and much thinking about what to do with it, but it resolves.  I find a Waste and Nuke his Library.  I tap the other shop and Hardcast the Titan, which is met with Force.  At this point the game becomes stupid because on the next turn Ian finds a Waste of his own and blasts my shop, leaving both of us with nothing.  We play draw/go for about 6 turns until I finally find some gas, but Ian has a lotus down and Drains it.  His next draw finds more mana and he intuitions for Oaths.  Oath comes down and he eventually finds an Orchard and goes on to win with Akroma, Bitch-Ass of Doom.  I board in 9 hate cards for Ian to deal with and totally switch my gameplan.  I lead off game 2 with a Lotus/Mox/Chalice=2.  He says OK.  So he plays a Dual land and says go.  I play Gemstone Mine and a Welder and Bust his Land.  He drops a Lotus, land and an Energy Flux.  I swear to myself inside and Stack the sacrifice effect on the Chalice during my Upkeep.  I weld the Chalice into a Lotus and Peel Ancestral off the Top.  I crack the Lotus for UUU and Ancestral me.  I draw into Sol Ring, Mox, Nether Void.  I tap Gemstone for G For Fastbond, play another Gemstone  and a Tolarian Academy and Drop Void after I get out my other Artifacts.  He has no responses and does Land/Go on his turn.  I take the turn back and stack his sacrifice abilities.  The Academy taps for some mana and I Thirst into a Jar that I pitch and weld in after tapping down to save all of my artifacts (except the one I weld into the Jar) and break the Jar on my upkeep.  I draw for the Turn and explode out from under the Void by playing 4 lands or so from my hand and ending the turn by pitching my jar hand (Titan, Crucible, and a thirst) and returning my old hand.  On the next turn I weld in the Titan to Ruin his mana after playing more tricks with the Energy Flux during my upkeep and Win.  On game 3 Ian breaks out an Early Oath, which I bust up with Ray of Revelation.  He Drains one of my spells which leads to Intuition for 2 Oath and an Energy Flux, which I Pick for him and then Kill with a Flashback of Ray.  Wastelands whack his Orchards and he elects not to burn as I have played a Welder fairly early.  Stuck with a pair of basic Islands we play draw/go for awhile until I try Void again.  He forces.  I’m sitting on a Swords in case he has some whacked out crap and I keep on drawing huge quantities of mana.  He draws Gaea’s Blessing and a Trop which he uses to Shuffle back in 3 Oaths, but I hardcast a Titan that he has to Mana Drain.  I weld it back in anyways and the Combination of welder Beatdown and mana Burn from being unable to cast spells finishes him off.

Round 4: Adam playing Oath

Great, more Oath and to top it off Adam’s a Team mate.  We debate the merits of drawing or scooping and decide to play it out.  Game one I lead off with Waste/Crypt/Sphere.  He leads with Waste to kill my land.  I don’t draw a land for approximately 10 turns while he digs out from under the Sphere and my Crypt beats me up.  In the process of doing this his Orchard gives me a couple of Dorks that start to clock him, but he drops Deed for 0 and clears my board save for Sphere.  I scoop to his resolved oath.

In Game 2 I go nuts with another early Sphere and a Nether Void which causes his concession.

Game 3 opens with Adam really doing nothing but playing a couple of lands.  I have double Shop in my opening Grip along with a Void, Sphere, Vault and Gemstone Mine.  So I lead off with the Shop=>Sphere.  Adam forces it and comes back with an Orchard.
I break out a Shop for the Vault and tap down for the Void.  This seemed like the right play, as even though I take 2 Burn I can recover a lot quicker than he can.  Adam’s Orchard taps after a couple of turns to play a Mox or two so I get a couple more Dorks to beat down with.  I proceed to draw nothing of consequence but manage to get a couple of non-shop lands stripped by Adam.  He has no Green Sources and can’t play Oath.  I have no non-Shop sources and can’t Untap Vault or Play Spells.  The dorks get Adam down to 7 when he finally ramps up to 7 mana so he can play Night of Souls’ Betrayal.  Now the Vault becomes an issue as I’m down to 12.  We continue to play Draw/Go until I’m down to 6 and Adam finally Topdecks his 9th mana Source.  He drops a morphling (hardcast, costing 8 mana, leaving U open in case I have a Swords I can Miraculously cast.)  and I die to Superman.

So I drop because I am the suck when it comes to Topdecking skills and T8ing will be… tough, and depend on Tie-Breaks.

Bob that was a hilarious deck name!  It was the first time i ever laughed till I pooped. I would be angry usually, but it wasn't my underwear, so good work!

This is Sam the One and only fish player.  This tourney was gnarly, again.  Congrats to the bearded guy for winning.  My report would be boring because i made the top 8 at 2-0-3.  Woo!  I drew with the MOST random aggro deck that should have annihalated me.  It should have killed me deader than Rick James (...too soon?) but didn't.  He had g/r zoo with Stifle and Sylvan Library and Force of Will.  Just wacky.  We drew, even though i could have won if I were better at this game... but I'm not.  Then I beat 7/10 like the wee girl it is.  Then I drew with Matt "I've got" Wood (... yeah, I went there) even after he had infinite Crucible/ Mindslaver/ industrictible land of DOOM combo.  Saved by the bell, but not in a gay Screech goes in drag to prom with Slater to impress Kelly and embarrass Zach kind of way.  More of a Principal Belding calls a snow day on a 90 degree weather day so he can make his golf game with Mr. T kind of way.  Yeah, Mr. T.  Then I beat bad Belcher with Tendrils(?) and got my ass kic... uh, me and Oath drew in the 5th.  I got in at 8 and conceded to Kalan, my teammate/lovable fat kid in training-mate.  He lost due to horrible play on his part to eventual champ, Beardy Magoo.  Great tourney, looking forward to Castle Rock.

SLOPS:
driving to LONGMONT!
Ryan, for canceling on us do to "grades".  We all know you were caught hooking again.  Just have the balls to tell us next time, Jezebel.
Clay, for buying me Copenhagen snuff.  Who knew eating tobacco would be so easy...

PROPS:
The CAstle Rock Chronic Cruisers (eh, new team name, eh...), for making the drive just like we did and organizing the next tourney.  But honestly, beta Beserk?  If I wanted $40, I'd put Clay's ass back on the street.
Jim, for explaing bukakke to Bob and loaning me cards.
Matt, for helping me understand the bracket and how to ID.
Bob, for IDing with me and not unleashing the beast on the poor bathrooom.  I don't think the paint would hav emade it this time.  I think I heard it cry last time.  Not loudly, but an audible wimper.
EVERYONE, for coming.
Adam, for not letting the 12 year old age limit on Halloween costumes that don't look weird rule stop you from dressing up.  You let your love of fourteenth century pants be known!
Bob's head, for not drawing the sun into it's orbit and destroying life as we know it.   (the thing is massive, like Roseanne on stilts)

PS: if anyone wants to come together and form team Bukkake, PM me....

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

Now it's time for Sam's "You pretty much had to be there"
JOKE OF THE TOURNAMENT!
Knock, knock
Who's there?
Boo
Boo who?
BOOOOKAKKKKEEEEEEEEEE!

Good times...
