I loved the idea Klown had of having a day two of his event with a poker tournament, highlander, trivia, other fun stuff(can you say unhinged tourney)...but I don't think that part of his event was advertised enough.

So my question, and it is VERY IMPORTANT, so that I don't lose my shirt, is to BE HONEST: Would you attend/stay if Waterbury had a day two?

EDIT### Day 1 would still be the main event only
Day 2 would be everything else

As long as the main event finishes in one day, I think it's a fantastic idea.

At large (non-type one) magic events, a second day makes a lot of sense. It allows there to be 16 rounds of Magic. However, this only happens at events which are giving away enormous prizes, like a Grand Prix or Pro Tour.

The downside is that a second day requires paying for a hotel room, and it also means having to have two days free instead of just one. (Not that I'm awake enough to do anything after a Waterbury anyways).

Staying for a second day is worthwhile when there are many thousands of dollars being given away in prize support. However, when the most you can win is well under a thousand dollars, the cost of a hotel room, and the temporal cost, might become a factor.

In addition, if the prizes remain the same, is a second day really needed to determine the winner?

EDIT: If the main event still lasts a single day, then a second day of hanging out might be a lot of fun, but may not be practical for everyone.

If it was like:

Day 1:

Uber Type 1 tournament that the bards will sing about and Zherbus will make an appearance that will cause droves of women to flock to the venue.

Day 2:

Highlander
Type 1 side event for like a mox (very important)
Drafts
Poker

If the Main Event is finished in the first day, so that attending does not require one to be present for both days, a second day could be a lot of fun.

Day 2 of endicott was amazingly fun, but only like 20 people stayed for it.

I just don't see how anyone could string together four days (one day drive each way) on which people could be off work and not have seasonal obligations with family and on which the venue is open to booking (I don't know if that's a factor or not). For most people booking a hotel room is necessary anyway, unless the community suddenly gets very active and everyone in Connecticut sublets out their homes.

Well, if you have to spend like a day driving to waterbury, you'd only stay for the main tournament on saturday. Sunday would just be the people who can get home even if they leave at like 7pm.

I'd help out day one, and hang around day two for random shit, but I honestly don't know if its worth it for the cost of the room, which I imagine is high.

I apologize...I was not completely clear.

If Waterbury had a day 2...the main event would only be on day one...what I am asking is if people would stay for day 2 side antics like side tourneys...maybe a second chance mox tourney...a poker tourney...a TEAM and INDIVIDUAL trivia game, etc.

Again...

DAY 1 - Main Event and nothing else
DAY 2 - Everything and anything else

I voted no, but do you mean any old weekend or a 3-day holiday weekend? That could be a different story for a lot of people...

I might, depends on how everything falls for me. I wouldn't have a problem with staying an extra day if I could find a roomie and a cheap room and nothing was happening the day after.

No.

Not because I don't want to, but because it's not really feasible for me to drive out there twice or rent a hotel room.

Honestly, I think you would be better off just having a huge magic party at someone's place than having an official day 2.

Would I like to go, HELL YEA. But then reality busts through the door and I realize that I am in college, have a girlfriend, and don’t have that much free cash or time.

To break it down;

20 bucks in gas and toll + a 6 hour drive down.

X amount in cash (at least 50?) for a hotel room for the night

Figure another 100 at least for food, snacks, and drinks. (6 meals). This does not include 21+ party style drinks.

15 bucks for day one, + X (lets say 10 for arguments sake) for day two.

Another 20 bucks for gas and tolls and a 6 hour drive back home.

Give me a total of $215 + 12 hours of driving. It could very well be much more. This can be a huge hurdle. To be truthful, I could almost buy a mox with just the cash I would spend on this weekend.

So I guess what I am saying is that I would love to go. I think it would be an amazing event. But I'm not sure I could possibly justify it to my bank account or myself.

In order to go it would have to be all of the following

A) A really good weekend (think sometime during a college vacation)
B) Big carpool down to save on gas and toll
C) Amazing hotel rates (or a free place to crash nearby)
D) Stuff to do that night
E) And an event that would have to be of truly mythic proportions.

With Waterbury's continued success, a day two would definitely be the shit.  Ray running it would also be awesome, but I want in's on a bacon bit eating contest this time!

A second day would be very cool.  In fact, it'd make the trip down from NH ever better, as we wouldn't have to drive there and back in one day.

Plus, there's always a way to share a room with a few buds, so it wouldn't be that much more money.

I also like Zherbus' suggestion of a day 2 mox only tourney, as that'd make the trip more worth it

As for mental magic...these are the rules we will be using:
http://www.starcitygames.com/php/news/expandnews.php?Article=5512

ADDITION: The card cannot be named as what it is...the author was vauge on this.

ADDITION: To play the card or Morph it you must know what it is and what it does. At any time though, your opponent can ask a judge to VERIFY what it is you said. The judge will simply confirm whether you are correct or not, but will not reveal any unknown information.

All the verdict this author put forth I agree with and so we will try that as a starting point for this first mental tourney and talk about it before day 2 of the next TMD after this one.

TEAM Magic Trivia(teams may be up to 4 people)

Ray,

If you need systems/controllers for the Mario Kart Tourney PM me and let me know. I'll happily lend them for the cause. (I have a functional X-box as well if that would come in handy for you)

I've only been to one Waterbury Tournament before, and was beaten soundly. I look forward to making a return, and being thrashed by all these folks one more time.

That would be exceptional...as a matter of fact...anyone who wished to bring a TV/X-BOX/Copy of Halo2/X-BOX Controller/ETC would be appreciated.  Let me know, though, for definite by PM so I could do a count of what else I need to get.

Thanks,

On topic, I'm sorry I'm unable to attend. It sounds like it'd be great fun. For those under 18(21 really, but that's not the point), would they be able to play in the Poker tournament? It sounds dumb, but could it be deemed illegal? Would anyone care?

Gambling is illegal regardless, but in this case the house is not taking a cut and no one's playing for real money, so it's technically not gambling. Obviously, if you don't get caught it's not a crime, and that's the safest route with something dubious like this.

as far as connecticut law goes it's not considered illegal gambling unless it's specifically paying cash into a pot to win cash in return, this is cash toward an awarded prize  same exact thing as a magic tournament it's just a different game you are playing to win the prize.

Along these same lines, does anyone have a hub to connect all the x-boxes they could bring, this seems to be the hardest of all the things to find so far.

I forgot to mention, both the second chance mox tourney and the highlander on day two will be 10 proxy, just like the main event.  Thanks to Bulls on Parade for bringing this to my attention.
